SUDBURYROCKS!!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes

Official Photos Now

Congratulations to all participants and thank you to everybody for making the inaugural SUDBURYROCKS!!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes such a success. The chilly day saw over 1,000 participants walk and run in four separate events: the 1K for the Kids, the 5K, 10K, 1/2 and Full Marathon. And about 350 hardy volunteers plus 30 police officers and auxiliaries ensured the day went smoothly for all involved. With registration and pledges we raised approximately $40,000 for the Diabetes Association. Thank you all Very Much! And thank you as well to all who have called and emailed regarding your experiences on the day. Your enthusiasm and thanks are what drives the Directors to continue to organize events like this. Please spread the word and we hope to see you all back again next year. Stay tuned to sudburyrocksmarathon.com. In the next few weeks we will confirm the date and all details for next year's Run.

I have added more photos to our Rocks!! collection. Please click above or here to view

A Rock!! Experiences the St. Croix 1/2 Ironman

by Becky Olacke

Well, coming back from St. Croix was rather sad since all I've seen since is rain and temperatures under 15.

The island of St. Croix was fantastic. The citizens were all very courteous to cyclists, even though the roads were very narrow and windy. Also, the day of the race the whole town showed up to watch the start at 6am!

The race itself was very eventful. My first mistake was believing that I wasn't physically or mentally ready. The swim started off pretty good. I was taking turns drafting with another girl in my age group as we quickly caught up with 5 age-groups that had gone before us. Nearing the end when we started to sprint I was accidentally pushed into a man's elbow and got a bloody-nose (all I thought was SHARKS!). After the swim was over I got into transition and had to wait until the bleeding was finished to get on my bike. The bike course was already filled with spectators and it was only 7am! Within the first 20 km of the bike a got a flat (I was able to fix it myself--a first!). The bike continued to get more interesting as I saw a few bad crashes directly in front of me. By the time I got off my bike, ready to start the run I had decided that I was never going to look at my bike again (but of course I did). The run was very nice, through a golf course on the ocean. My run consisted of a lot of walking after the 4 mile mark because of my knee. This race became one of mental strength rather than physical. I finished the race and spent the next hour or so covered in ice in the medical tent.

All in all this experience was good. I completed my first international race and now a week later would definitely do it again. One exciting part of the race was the intimate nature of the racers and pros. In the week before the race they had training swims where I met Peter Reid (Kona champ!) and Wendy Ingram!!

Rocks!! and Locals do the Victoria Du in Waterloo

Seven Locals traveled to Waterloo for Subaru's Victoria Duathlon. The event is comprised of a 4k run, a 25k bike and a follow up 4k run.

All did well and Melanie Muise even made #1 in her age group.

Mike's TRi Website

by Mike Coughlin

Are YOU ready to TRI this Summer?

I am thrilled to announce that for the third straight year I will be offering a triathlon clinic in Sudbury. It has been great watching this clinic grow over the past couple of years, and I am looking forward to seeing an even bigger group this year. I am also excited to announce that this year I am expanding the clinic from 8 weeks to 10, starting on June 14.

Once again I will be hosting the clinic on Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm, and will use a variety of locations throughout the city. There are so many interesting training locales in this town, it would be a shame not to sample them all.

Similar to last year, each session will include a short talk about a tri-related topic followed by hands-on technique instruction and a short multi-sport workout.

At the end of the clinic each participant will receive a booklet packed with sport specific skills, technique drills and handy tips and tricks that will increase your enjoyment of the sport and give you a leg up on the competition.

One of the coolest things I noticed at last year's clinic was how well the athletes worked together to collectively 'raise the bar'. Everyone had someone close to their ability level to work with and inspire them to improve, and new training partnerships and friendships were created that are still going strong.

This year, my goal is to have 12-18 athletes in the clinic; still small enough to provide personal attention, but big enough to promote an even better group dynamic and have lots of fun.

Judging by the interest I have received so far from previous clinic participants and new inquiries, these clinic spots are going to go fast. Be sure to reserve your spot by emailing mike@discomfortzone.com .

Happy training!

Mike
