SUDBURYROCKS!!!
Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes
GOOD
LUCK! and Run Day Prep. - by Brent
Walker
|
I wanted to take this opportunity to wish all of
the runners Good Luck in their race. I know many of the runners
have been preparing by training hard for weeks, months and years
for this race. The organizers have also been diligently preparing
for this race for weeks, months and what sometimes feels like
years. My small part of this event has been to over see the timing
and registration process. Months ago, when we had our first person
sign up online for the full marathon it sunk in with me that we
had started something that will grow to be a great day. Combined,
we currently have over 500 people registered for the 5 K, 10K
½ Marathon and Full Marathon! By race day we are forecasting
over 600 in these events. In addition to these numbers, the FREE
1 K kids event will also be a HUGE success.
The 5 K, 10K ½ Marathon and Full Marathon races will be
electronically chip timed. What that means is that every person
will be given a small race timing chip that they are required
to wear on their shoe or around their ankle. The race chip records
their time as they cross the finishing mat. If you don't were
chip - your time isn't recorded. After the completion of the race,
volunteers will be removing the timing race chip from the runners
shoe or ankle. If you pick up your race kit but don't run the
race, please return the race timing chip. If he race chip is not
returned, a bill for $50 will be sent to the runner.
I wanted to remind people that if they have not already done
so, please register As Soon As Possible. The online registration
will close Thursday May 4th at 9:00 PM. With the exception of
the 5 K and free 1 K race, there will be no same day registration.
The race kits will be available for pickup at the Sudbury Running
Room on Friday May 4 from 6:00 PM until store closing at 9:00
PM. Race kit pickup is also on Saturday May 6th at the Sudbury
Running Room from 10 AM to 5 PM, or on race day up to one half
hour before the start of the race.
The free 1 K kids registration will be outside the main doors
at Science North on race day up to one half hour before the start
of the race. We are also expecting a large turnout for the kids
event so please provide adequate time for this registration process.
There is a short walk to the start line for all of the races
away from Science North. For each of the races, we will be announcing
approximately 15 minutes before the start of the race that the
runners should be moving to the start line and given directions
as to the location of the start line. The races will be starting
at exactly the posted start times. There will be no start mat
so ensure that you are lined up at the start line for the beginning
of the race.
SUDBURYROCKS!!! Marathon 7:00 am
Sun Run 1/2 Marathon 8:30 am
1K Kids Fitn Fun 9:00 am
5K Sun Run 9:30 am
10K Sun Run 9:30 am
On race day, please be sure
to arrive early since we are expecting large crowds and there
will be no parking available at Science North and immediate area.
Parking will be available at the Upper Bell Park Parking Facility
located at the corner of Paris and York St. Please provide enough
time to walk to Science North or use the Free shuttle service.
Good luck and have a great race!
Brent Walker
Next week will be the
last installment of the Run Directors Reports. Please stay
tuned.

Marathon

Running the Flora London Marathon 2 weeks after the Paris Marathon
with
34164 other runners was indeed a sadomasochistic & brutal
experience. My
legs said let's quit at the halfway point, but it was amazing
to see what
willpower, courage and spirit (both my own and even more so
those around me
and the crowd cheering on "Go Canada!") will do to
get you to put one foot
in front of the other to finish in 4:37:52.
This was slower than I expected even though I ran without looking
at the
time, but I also realized how mentally easy it was to finish
in under 4
hours, where most of the faces have grins rather than grimaces.
The true
test of determination and striving for what seemed impossible
was in running
a marathon in the rear half of the pack, and resorting to the
marathon
shuffle with many of the other wounded runners - some of which
had stopped
and another who had fallen to the ground right next to me, but
picked
themselves back up to continue forward - many who were clearly
in alot more
pain than me - it was truly inspiring.
The route was stunning as we ran over the Tower Bridge, passed
the London
Eye and finished in front of Buckingham Palace, and there wasn't
1m of the
route that wasn't crowded with spectators several rows deep
cheering us on.
The majority of runners were running the Flora London Marathon
for a variety
of medical and social charities and every type of costume you
could possibly
imagine was present including dragons, cross dressers, superheroes,
medieval
knights, Elvis, cartoon characters and the Royal Air Force in
full military
dress.
I was passed by Batman & Robin, as well as the Devil, and
I passed by Daisy
& Donald Duck as well as Scooby Doo. The funniest and most
depressing part
of the whole rain soaked marathon was being passed by a guy
dressed as a
huge stuffed fuzzy turtle with a big turtle head and a shell
on his back -
I had to laugh!
Looking forward to the next Marathon - Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront.
Cheers,
William Tai - Apr 23, London England

Our Tennessee Lady Runs
First Ultra
by Karen Beaulieu
Congratulations to all who ran Boston. We have
to get Lise there as a participant instead of a support system.
I was looking forward to what Brent had to say about his first
Boston but nada from him. Did you love it Brent?
Here's what I did Sat. morning....
I ran my first ultra...It was
billed as a 50k but the actual distance was 34 miles.
Oh my god Monique....it was very tough completing
the last loop. I was feeling ok for the first three although
towards the end of the third I was a little dehydrated. I carried
a bottle and finished it every lap but still ran into trouble
at the end of the third.
After every lap I drank more and ate fruit and
even had a peanut butter sandwich . I thought I was doing everything
right... Most runners there were ultras who regularly complete
50 to 100 milers. They did give me a lot of encouragement and
advice for running ultras.
At the end of my third lap I was going to bow out as I knew
i was getting dehydrated but here is where all that encouragement
kicks in. They gave me salt tablets, had me drink salt water
, gave me gross power gel with extra sodium in it then told
me I could not give up as I was in the home stretch. I went
back to my car and changed socks and shoes as I was filthy and
I had too much mud in my socks and shoes.
The course was a mud bath and where it wasn't
muddy it was plain wet, think SouthFork Monique...
This is where I probably made my second mistake.
I took too long in my transition time (I made it a transition)
When I finally got back out there I knew I was in deep trouble.
For this last lap I carried two water bottles thinking that
would pull me out. I walked the first three miles of the course
because I thought i was dying. My head was pounding so badly
I thought my brain was going to explode. When I did try to run
I could only run for a short distance before the pain in my
head forced me to stop.
So here is how my last 8 miles played out. walk,
walk, walk ,stagger walk and stagger more. I was even seeing
things in the bush that weren't there.
I finally crossed that finish line in 8hrs. and 13 min. The
funny thing is that even though I walked practically that whole
loop in the last mile I passed 4 people who had passed me at
the beginning of the lap.
I was so dehydrated and in so much pain that night. I went to
bed at 6:30 and did not get out of bed until 11 Sun. morning.
I made a few mistakes so I can now tell Monique
and Christine what we should do to prepare for the Owen Sound
run. The most important thing is to hydrate (I didn"t)(we're
surprised??NOT! ed.)days before the run and not on the
day of the run :)
When I was in the last loop I was thinking I made a big mistake
and should have quit, but when I came across that finish line
I was glad in a sick way that I did it.
Girls, it's really tough . That's how I'm leaving it

rain soaked day.

Strong
and Determined
by Minna Mettinen
While my small circle of friends do not quite fully appreciate
my current athletic aspirations, one day at the gym a woman I
don’t even know told me that I was strong.
This to me was a strange comment, considering I strain to get
my clothing on, have someone come morning and night to help me
bathe and I struggle to swallow foods that I used to love to eat.
Being strong was the last thing I thought of myself as.
The "gym regulars" with their rippling muscles and taut
tummies, they are the strong ones.
When I first started training it was because intuitively I understood
that my life expectancy depends on it.
Yet I dreamed of the sinewy arms and flat belly that I would surely
be rewarded with; I longed to look like I did when I was 20!
Sadly my body didn't consent. Though it’s becoming slightly
more toned, I remain round in the wrong spots and not round enough
in others, I still have flabby thighs but fortunately my stomach
covers them.
I am realizing that although I don’t look like "a marathoner",
it doesn't matter because I have the determination, heart, soul
and strength of one.
Now I know that being strong doesn't always mean having a rock
hard body. It means working out consistently, even though you'll
likely never develop that perfectly sculpted figure. Rather it
means a body that brings you to the end of your planned training
routine, or to the finish line each and every race, no matter
what your time.
I am beginning to realize that strength is a matter of having
a determined mind.
The "look" of a marathoner is unimportant; it's the
determination, heart, soul and strength of one that matters.
Minna is Sudbury Rocks!! only wheelchair
athlete. Her ultimate goal is to wheel the Boston Marathon. She
will be joining us for the Continental Insulation 5k Sun Run on
May 7.

What is a Running Club??? - by
Sheila Yaw-MacLean
by Sheila Yaw-MacLean
A running club is something that I and maybe you
do too, take for granted. I go to the gym each day to run and
assume that someone from the “Club” will be there
to run with. Below is a list of what I can describe as what
our Running Club is all about…
A Running Club is an open co-ed closest……there’s
always someone with extra running clothes when you forget yours…Last
week I forgot to bring socks, twice, a long sleeve shirt to
wear outside and running shoes all on different days. On Friday
I forgot shorts but had 4 pairs of socks in my bag. Thanks to
everyone that lent me the above items….I will return them
eventually.
A Running Club provides a free place to stay when
you’re running races out of town. Burlington Chilly ½
marathon we had dinner the night before the race at Steve and
Suzanne’s. As always Steve and Suzanne made sure we had
enough carbs to load up for the next day’s run. Hamilton
Around the Bay we stayed there and they weren’t even home.
Not to mention the hospitality provided to us by Ken and Lynne
in Cobourg on a couple of occasions.
A Running Club provides free psychiatric care.
You can usually tell your running partner anything you want
and you’ll know it won’t go any further. Partially
because the person you’re running with really isn’t
even listening because they’re dealing with their own
issues, like trying to survive a 30km run, but mostly because
it’s an unwritten law that what is said while running
doesn’t go any further.
A Running Club has a Coach who fosters a love/hate
relationship in each one of us. Our Coach is Vince Perdue.

The
Running Room Club Update: April 26, 2006
Sudbury Store (Cedar Pointe Plaza)
Good Afternoon,
Just in time for you to purchase that new running and walking
outfit for the Sudbury Rocks Race Run or Walk for Diabetes
we’ve received a shipment of very cool MPG clothing…
yes including a very stylish running skort that we’ve
been waiting for. In the past week we’ve also received
some very nice Running Room Fitwear for both the ladies
and the gentlemen that want to make that impression with
the photo finish. The Running Room Fit-Wear for women includes
capris with great reflective coverage on the legs, sports
bras, running tanks and jerseys that would work great for
cycling as well. The MPG line has capris, skorts, shorts,
running tank with the built-in bra, long and short sleeve
tops with great reflective accents. The mens lines include
long and short sleeve tops and shorts with reflective accents.
Vector cereal and cereal bars have 20% coupons for saving
on purchases over $50 at the Running Room. These coupons
expire in November with no restrictions on electronics so
if you were thinking about getting the new Garmin 305 this
may be the right time to shop for Mother’s Day or
Father’s Day.

Back Home at Last
Well, it is great to be back home in Sudbury . I wasn’t
sure that I would feel that way after a winter of travel
and adventure, but coming home really reminded me of how
much I enjoy living in the north, and how enthusiastic
and supportive the athletic community is here. It was
also clear that this community was continuing to grow,
with more people involved, a new triathlon club and the
addition of a local Spring marathon.
The past month has been fun and relaxing, but not exactly
jam packed with training. After the abbreviated IM New
Zealand, I briefly contemplated gaining a last minute
entry into another Ironman such as IM Arizona, but soon
had to admit that I was a bit overcooked from all the
training and in need of a rest. In fact, I had probably
been in a plateau or slight fitness decline since Epic
Camp in January. That was the price I paid for going so
hard back then, and it was a lesson well learned. (Read
