SUDBURYROCKS!!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes

Finding Volunteers - by Paul Washchuk

What a learning experience the Volunteer Committee consisting of Cindy, Carol, Gary and myself had over the last 7 months. Last October, we where given the task of finding 200 non runners to be volunteers for the upcoming race. At that time, there was a lot of discussion by the committee as to where, and if these people could be found, and what would be the best approach. In fact there were a lot of doubters. In addition, none of us had any experience in soliciting volunteers and we knew it was not going to be an easy task.

I should also point out that as time passed, the various committees acquired a better understanding of what man power was required, and the request for volunteers grew. We now had to find over 250 people.

As we started to make contact with various organizations, schools, service clubs, businesses, athletic facilities, volunteer resource centres, etc., we found we had to overcome a lot of obstacles. One of the big issue we had to deal with involved asking people to commit 6 hours as a volunteer for a road race 3-6 months in advance. This was unheard of in this community. Sudburians are last minute people. However, as we persisted in making contact with the various groups last year, the numbers started to trickle in around the New Year.

In January/February, schools, and service clubs came on side and the numbers started to climb. By the end of February we had reached our committee’s goal of 60, and by the end of March reached close to 200. The numbers are continuing to grow and it is anticipated the expected number of volunteers will be there to make this a class event that Sudburian’s can be proud of on the 7th.

For Cindy, Carol, Gary, and myself, it has been quite a journey, and one that I am sure we are all proud to be a part of.

In the next few weeks our other Run Directors will be providing their insights into the Event. Please stay tuned.

William Tai Runs the Paris Marathon

One of our more recent members took part in the Paris, France Marathon on Sunday and he dutifully filed the following report: (He's a brute for punishment as he's also participating in the upcoming London England Marathon in a week and a half. Bravo Will!)

Here is my first ever race report for my first marathon from
the city of lights & love - Paris (which's taking longer than the marathon
to write on a french keyboard!)

After tripping on the last step before boarding a Seine river cruise &
consuming bucket fulls of champagne & cognac 2 days before the Paris
marathon (Bob & Diane would be proud of me!) I was wondering how well I
would do, but I decided to go in with the attitude "I came, I saw, I
conquered" - Julius Caesar.

I headed for the 3:45 corral in front of the Arc de Triomphe along with the
35 000 other runners. The start was extremely crowded, and it was difficult
to pass people, but the race went well as we passed by the Louvre, obelisk,
Place de la Concorde and other famous monuments. The aid stations were
deadly since they were serving bananas and the peels littered the streets.
I decided to pick up my pace at the 15K mark since I was falling behind my
planned 3:45 pace. I was on pace for 3:45, but my right leg felt like
concrete at the 36K point and I slowed down my pace for the rest of the run
to finish in 3:48:40 (results are on www.parismarathon.com bib#33165 and
pictures will be ready on www.maindruphoto.com on Thurs. Apr. 13 - I have
more personal photos as well on my camera). The crowd shouting Allez
Canada, Va Canada and Go Canada after seeing my shirt really helped, as did
the cursed Sudbury hills for the short uphill sections in Paris. I wasn't
expecting the heat in the underground tunnels which got really hot, but the
roar of the runners helped. Overall it was a fantastic experience and the
most challenging athletic endeavour of my life so far, and a beautiful route
- I'm looking forward to the London marathon in a couple of weeks. I was in
no mood for the beer or wine stops along the route so I did not indulge;
however I can proudly report that my pre-race dinner consisted of a Big Mac
Super Sized meal and a tuna sandwich!

P.S. My gratitude to all of the people below for making my first marathon a
success:
Thanks to Vince and the Rocks members for all of the long runs, speed
training and advice (thanks Diane for initially suggesting I join). Thanks
Susie, Steph, Taylor, Steve, Frank & Lise my past & present Running Room
clinic instructors. Thanks to Jen & Kirsti for intially getting me into
running. Last, but not least thanks to Tawnie for her love, support and
long runs.

Proposed Condo Development Near Laurentian University

Forwarded by Laura Haapamaki

Dalron Construction is presently proposing a condominium housing project in the South East portion of LoEllen Park that will consist of 263 units including:

~43 detached condos

~12 Semi-detached condos (2 units each)

~12 row houses condos (6 units each)

~160 apartment style condos (2 buildings)

Our designated parklands and University Trails will all be used to support this new project.

We need to come together as a community and be heard. For anyone who wants to voice their opinion and stop the destruction of our parklands and trails contact the planning committee at City Council:

Sports Nutrition: Energy Bars

By Jennifer Neily, M.S., R.D., L.D., and Amber Odom, R.D., L.D.

(Forwarded by Tim Uuksulainen)

It is best to eat a variety of whole foods at each meal to provide a well-balanced diet. On days you need to grab something to prevent skipping a meal or snack, an "energy bar" may be a good alternative. Energy bars can also provide energy before and/or after a work out or participation in a sporting event. Remember to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water or non-caffeinated beverages.

There are five different kinds of "energy bars":

Performance Bars: Frequently referred to as energy bars, they can be high in carbohydrates to maximize an aerobic workout. High carbohydrate bars (60-70% carbohydrate) are best eaten 45 minutes to one hour before aerobic exercise. The protein in the bar should contain a high quality source, such as casein, whey, soy, or egg.

Meal Replacement Bars: Designed to replace a meal within the caloric range of around 300 to 400 calories and 15 or more grams of protein from a quality source. Choose a bar that is 5 gm total fat and 3 gm saturated fat. Be sure to note that a single bar will not provide all the nutrients you need, so do not replace all of your meals with a meal replacement bar.

Snack Bars: Intended to be eaten between meals to satisfy your appetite until your next meal, but are not intended to be a meal replacement. These bars typically range from 100 calories for women up to 300 calories for men. Select a bar 5 gm total fat and 3 gm saturated fat. These bars can be combined with low-fat yogurt and a piece of fruit for a meal replacement.

Women's Bars: Specially formulated to provide extra nutrients needed by most women such as calcium, folic acid, iron, and soy protein. Although designed for women, males may benefit from them as well.

Carbohydrate Controlled Bars: Designed for people with diabetes; ask your Diabetic Specialist which bar is best for you (Glucerna, Choice DM, or Extend).

Tips for choosing the healthiest energy bar:

* Try to avoid bars with palm kernel oil or partially-hydrogenated fat in the first five ingredients on the label. Limit saturated fat to 3 grams or less per bar and no trans fat.
* For weight control, choose a bar with at least 3 grams of fiber.
* Women may want to choose a bar that contains at least 300 mg of calcium per serving to help meet their daily calcium needs.
* Sugar should not be more than half the grams of carbohydrates in the bar. Try NOT to select a bar with high fructose corn syrup, glucose, or fructose as the first ingredient.

Mike's Tri Adventure

by Mike Coughlin

Mike's TRi Website

Welcome to Mike's Tri Adventure

My name is Mike Coughlin and I am a triathlete from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. In 2001 I started training for triathlons for fun and fitness. I discovered that the sport also provides great opportunities to learn about yourself and meet fascinating people.

This winter, I decided to follow my triathlon dreams and train full time for 5 months, visiting several triathlon hotbeds and training my body and mind to be stronger than ever. Along the way I look forward to meeting interesting people, seeing some new places and taking the experiences as they come. I designed this website to write about these experiences for myself, friends and family.

"Ironman Compressed": New Zealand Race Report 2006

Standing at the waters edge on Lake Taupo the day before Ironman New Zealand, it looked as though 2006 was going to be a bit of an odd year for the race. IMNZ had been at this location for 8 years now, and had yet to have a significantly choppy day. Yet for the third day in a row, there I was wading into the swells and crashing waves of what was normally a calm piece of water. "No worries", I thought - everyone says this is meant to pass. Besides, I am ready for anything, and it can't possibly get worse than this...
