SUDBURYROCKS!!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes

Sudbury Really Does ROCK!!- by Amanda Luoma

It has been wonderful to work with such a dedicated group of individuals
who are committed to hosting a first class event here in Sudbury! The past
6 months have flown by in a flurry of activity – which resulted in meeting
sponsors, volunteers and participants who are all very proud of Sudbury and
looking forward to seeing what can be accomplished with the
SudburyRocks!!!Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes.

Promotion Highlights

A first class website was launched this year!! Thanks to Jim Lung, who
designed sudburyrocksmarathon.com. This site has received nothing but
praise from everyone who has visited it. Thanks to Kirk Petroski and the
staff of ERE Services for handling the site upkeep.

CTV Commercial – a fun day was spent at Science North shooting the
SudburyRocks!!!Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes commercial. The ads have been
running on CTV for a while now. Special thanks to the volunteers who took
part in the commercial – Minna, Frank, Sheila, Vince and to Canadian
Diabetes Association staff members Amanda, Kirsikka and Emily – as well as
to our sponsor CTV, for making this happen. The commercial plays across
Northeastern Ontario and has garnered interest and participants from across
the viewing area.

We Hit the Road - Promoting Sudbury in Hamilton at the Around the Bay Road
Race was GREAT!! We had a number of people stop by the booth who not only
knew where Sudbury was, but had lived here at one time and/or had family
who still do. Many marathoners have already planned their run schedule for
this year, but we could see the wheels turning for 2007! (We promised to do
our very best to have the snow gone by May 7, should they come up to take
part… perhaps we spoke too soon as the weather this week has not been
great!)

I had never considered Sudbury all that hilly, but there was a lot of
discussion about that among the Southern runners. I also found out that
Sudbury runners are held in very high esteem in the South due to our
“everyday hill training” – they feel we are hard to compete against and
they are often intimidated by us… good to know. =)

The Chilly Half Marathon in Burlington also saw volunteers donning our
orange shirts to promote the SudburyRocks!!! Event. Thanks to all those who
wore the shirts (some under duress due to the colour) – they were
remembered!

To Sum Things Up – “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed
citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever
has.”(Margaret Mead). The SUDBURYROCKS!!! Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes
came about as a result of thoughtful, committed citizens, willing to put in
a lot of effort and energy to make something wonderful happen. This event
is about fitness and health, and improving the lives of Canadians not only
affected by diabetes, but also who are at risk of developing diabetes. On
behalf of the Canadian Diabetes Association, thank you to:
- the more than 280 volunteers
- the more than 30 sponsors
- everyone who participates and supports the Canadian Diabetes Association

Sincerely, Jennifer MacKinnon and Amanda Luoma, Canadian Diabetes
Association

In the next few weeks our other Run Directors will be providing their insights into the Event. Please stay tuned.

Our Tennessee Rock!! Runs Greenways 5k - Incognito

by Karen Beaulieu (Betty Boobie)

I have not been on the computer all week so imagine my surprise when I see you have written that I placed first in my age division in the Knoxville Marathon :) I did keep meaning to check how I placed but never got around to it.
I did follow the 3:40 pacer but ran into problems just after the 20 mile mark and made the painful decision to let them go. This decision was actually made easier due to the pain I was in :(
All things considered I guess my time was ok , I just wanted a better time. I will say I did have to deal with some mechanical problems leading up to the marathon and I did not really know how things would turn out so I really should not whine .... My left shoe has all kinds of lifts and spongy things attached to it but it is all keeping me running and my hips and spine are finally aligned and staying there :)
The therapists wanted me to take 6wks. off but that is not really anoption I want to take so I will see how things play out.

Today I decided to run the Greenways 5k. in downtown Knoxville. I have neglected to tell you how I ran it..... (The Greenways 5K race is unique in that most of its route is on the most scenic portion of the Third Creek Greenway, but it also features live music, plenty of food, and living plant awards to overall and age group winners).

My time was 22:48 and my course record for this run is 20:30. It was very muggy this morning and my legs are still not completely recovered from last Sun.

Oh, I have not told you how I was dressed, I decided to have some fun and dressed in Steve's fat lady costume. Man it was hard to run in that thing as the pendulous breasts kept getting in my way. It was a padded body that I wore over my own top half. I will send a picture when I get one .
It was funny as several people were over heard saying that all they wanted to do was come in ahead of the fat stripper. They were disappointed....I was the entertainment au jour.
Not a bad finish at all :)

Wish you were there to join in the fun. Someone asked me why I did it and I replied because life is too short not to have fun........... happy trails K

Mike's Tri Adventure

by Mike Coughlin

Mike's TRi Website

Welcome to Mike's Tri Adventure

My name is Mike Coughlin and I am a triathlete from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. In 2001 I started training for triathlons for fun and fitness. I discovered that the sport also provides great opportunities to learn about yourself and meet fascinating people.

This winter, I decided to follow my triathlon dreams and train full time for 5 months, visiting several triathlon hotbeds and training my body and mind to be stronger than ever. Along the way I look forward to meeting interesting people, seeing some new places and taking the experiences as they come. I designed this website to write about these experiences for myself, friends and family.

"Ironman Compressed": New Zealand Race Report 2006

Standing at the waters edge on Lake Taupo the day before Ironman New Zealand, it looked as though 2006 was going to be a bit of an odd year for the race. IMNZ had been at this location for 8 years now, and had yet to have a significantly choppy day. Yet for the third day in a row, there I was wading into the swells and crashing waves of what was normally a calm piece of water. "No worries", I thought - everyone says this is meant to pass. Besides, I am ready for anything, and it can't possibly get worse than this...
