Rocks!! Survive Ironman New Zealand

By Shellie Nowak - our Aussie Correspondent

Fellow Rocks!!, Mike Coughlin and Shellie Nowak, took on the very prestigious Ironman New Zealand last weekend ... and survived. Why so tough?... Read the Archives.

Shellie Adds:

G'day Mates!

One word comes to mind in explaining my 1st Ironman experience - Unforgettable! The amazing scenery, the friendly people and that fringing WIND! Hahaha...

For anybody thinking of doing an IM, I highly recommend using TriTravel (www.TriTravel.com.au). They not only offered great accommodation, optional swim/bike/run activities but friendship and fun. <Smile> Don't worry Shane. I'll keep the bus "incident" a secret.....<wink,wink> !

For the actual race, well, that's the way the cookie crumbles. Disappointed? Absolutely. Especially since I had so many dramas with my wetsuit. I actually wanted to do the swim!!!

By the time I left the start line in the time-trial format, it was approx.12:45 p.m. I'll never forget Joanna Lawn's (lead female) look on her face as I past her in the opposite direction. Ohhhh, boy.The pain on her face spoke a thousand words....When I finally went around the turn-around point, I instantly knew I was in trouble. Hmmmm, it was like a Mac truck hitting you. The wind was that strong. Having such severe shin splints, I thought if I went all out on the bike (like I normally do), I simply would not have the strength to do the run. So, I made the hard decision to pull back, put the bike in the lowest gear and spin my heart out. It killed me to watch soooo many people pass me but it had to be done. One things for sure, I will never forget that hill up Broadlands Rd. I was 90% of my maximum heart rate (in the lowest gear) and not moving! Hahaha - someone could have walked faster than I was going!

I kept thinking that the wind would decrease once I got on the run. Oh, how wrong I was! The head wind did not let up until the turn-around point of the run. At times, I did not know whether to laugh or cry....

BUT, everything was a lead-up to the last 5km of the race.I have never felt so strong, so far back in a race, as I did there. Even the last couple of km's (where the wind kept changing direction) I felt like I was getting stronger with each step. How do I express what it felt like to cross that finish line? I can't. It's indescribable.

Many people have asked me if my experience has diminished the way I look at triathlons. NO WAY! In fact, just the opposite. I can't wait for my next race!

To me, IMNZ06 represents what triathlons are all about....Strength, Heart and Courage. <Smile> If that was the worst case scenario.... BRING IT ON!!!!

Congrats to Mike Coughlin who had a fantastic race despite the very tough conditions. Way to go! A special congrats goes to Aussie Martin Boyd who did get that Kona spot. Proud of ya, mate! Goes to show, that with hard work and perseverance...anything IS possible!

Cheers,
Shellie

Run Club Update - by Lise Edwards

The Running Room Club Update: March 14 2006
Sudbury Store (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

Okay so just when I thought it would be safe to put away my winter running gear, old man winter comes calling again, I just can't believe its snowing out there. Hopefully we'll get into the spirit of Spring with all the green we will see this weekend. Yes...it's time for our 2nd Annual St. Patrick's Day Run/Walk. This event is Free and is a graduation fun run/walk for our graduating classes from Learn to Run, 5k, 10k, For Women Only. Only thing you have to remember is that you should have something green on...socks, shoes, hats, makeup, hair colour, accessories you name it and we'll take our group photos and then send you off to enjoy the run/walk. We will be serving some green refreshments and treats for everyone when they return to the store so feel free to bring in your baking or treats if you would like to contribute to our celebration.

We've started a few clinics this week and look forward to having better weather to get you out to enjoy our new line up of clinics including our 5/10k walking clinic headed by Johanna Gatien and Lise Edwards (me) along with Russ Thom as our group leader. We also had Lindsey Jones start our 10k clinic last week and she is looking forward to having the graduates from our 5k and 10k joining her this week. Our energetic Colin Jacobs is taking on the Learn to Run group which started last night in that rainy weather and I have to say the group had a great run/walk even with the rain. Our For Women Only program starts this Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and we are looking forward to having Shannon Skraba take on her first clinic. Shannon is a graduate from many of our clinics including the For Women Only, 10k clinics and she has been talking about training for longer distances, I think she's hooked.

Mike's Tri Adventure

by Mike Coughlin

Mike's TRi Website

Welcome to Mike's Tri Adventure

My name is Mike Coughlin and I am a triathlete from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. In 2001 I started training for triathlons for fun and fitness. I discovered that the sport also provides great opportunities to learn about yourself and meet fascinating people.

This winter, I decided to follow my triathlon dreams and train full time for 5 months, visiting several triathlon hotbeds and training my body and mind to be stronger than ever. Along the way I look forward to meeting interesting people, seeing some new places and taking the experiences as they come. I designed this website to write about these experiences for myself, friends and family.

The race - initial impressions

Wow - that was a punishing event. It was mush more difficult than any half IM I have ever done, and I didn't even need to swim! Now I know what a kite feels like. Have you ever ran in wind so strong that it blew your legs into each other? My shoulders actually hurt from the run too - nuts.
