Devon Kershaw Wins Bronze in World Cup Race

Tuesday, March 7, 2006 - Press Releases

By: Doug McIntyre/CCC

Borlaenge, SWE – The boys are back in town. For the first time in more than 15 years, the Canadian Cross-Country Ski Team had a male competitor reach the podium in World Cup action to cap off a heady day of double medal results and four top-10 finishes on Tuesday.

In a case of rookie fire and veteran savvy, respectively, Devon Kershaw and Sara Renner both turned in bronze-medal performances in the sprint events to put a Canadian on both the men’s and women’s podium, prompting celebration among their teammates. Read More...

Rocks!! Run in Burlington's 10th Anniversary Chilly 1/2

This was a very special year for the Chilly 1/2 and Frosty 5k as the VR PRO Organizers celebrated the Event's 10th Anniversary. Participants were treated to long sleeve technical t-shirts, Special loot bags and unique "rotating chilly" finishing medals. Good going Mark and Kelly Arnott for continuing to put on an event that gets better each year.

That's what keeps us coming back and 10 Rocks!! plus 2 friends hit the Burlington streets for our first real start of the season race.

And what a start it was for some. Shawn Schryer (1:24:37), Brent Walker (1:26:35 ) and Donna Smrek (2:01:15) ran personal bests. Eric Uuksulainen (1:18:43) came first in his age group and probably P.B'd. The rest of us had great runs and did the best we could on a day where the sun shone brightly, the footing was excellent and the camaraderie just grand. We'll be back again next year.

Lise Perdue adds:

The Chilly Half organizers sure outdid themselves this year. Awesome medal, cool shirt and great back pack. It was hard to believe we were running on pavement. I must admit that the biggest thrill of the race for me is almost always the finish line. It was exceptionally sweet this time running in the last few yards with my 8 year old niece, with all those orange clad bodies cheering us on. The T-shirt advertising the Sudbury Marathon certainly had some effect. Congrats to all our fellow Rocks. Well done. See you Around the Bay.

Rocks!! Survive Ironman New Zealand

Fellow Rocks!!, Mike Coughlin and Shellie Nowak, took on the very prestigious Ironman New Zealand this weekend ... and survived. Why so tough?... Read these notes from the Race Organizers:

Note #1: Due to weather, the race has been turned into a duathlon. The bike has been shortened to 90km, and the run is 21km. Therefore, while finishing times are correct, they are calculated from the beginning of the bike course.

Note #2:After 40 knot winds threatened to make it impossible to even have a race here today, we ended up witnessing a pretty impressive day of competition that included a challenging bike that almost stopped the best in the world in their tracks, followed by a run that, considering these conditions, was not-so-easy, either.

In the end, today's race here in Taupo wasn't a full Ironman distance race, but it is a day that everyone here won't easily forget. It was a day full of challenges, but getting through those challenges will be remembered all-too-well, especially by the 1,243 athletes who made it to the finish line here today.

Thanks so much for joining us.

Mike's Tri Adventure

by Mike Coughlin

Mike's TRi Website

Welcome to Mike's Tri Adventure

My name is Mike Coughlin and I am a triathlete from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. In 2001 I started training for triathlons for fun and fitness. I discovered that the sport also provides great opportunities to learn about yourself and meet fascinating people.

This winter, I decided to follow my triathlon dreams and train full time for 5 months, visiting several triathlon hotbeds and training my body and mind to be stronger than ever. Along the way I look forward to meeting interesting people, seeing some new places and taking the experiences as they come. I designed this website to write about these experiences for myself, friends and family.

The race - initial impressions

Wow - that was a punishing event. It was mush more difficult than any half IM I have ever done, and I didn't even need to swim! Now I know what a kite feels like. Have you ever ran in wind so strong that it blew your legs into each other? My shoulders actually hurt from the run too - nuts.
