Rocks!! Run First Marathon
in Tampa Fl
Just
a note from the two “Florida Rocks” that our training
took a serious turn with our successful completion of the Tampa
Gasparilla Classic Marathon.
Carol and I have
been talking about doing a marathon for five years and when
we heard there were 10 medical sites on the course we thought
it had all the requirements. We trained slow and surprise, surprise,
we ran slow at 4:33. Carol
was third in her age group and all I can
say is I cleanly beat Carol (by
1 second).
The last 6 miles
were into an intense wind and was difficult for all the runners.
I guess the best part was the cheese burger and beer at end
of the course and the worst part was the ice cold bath prior
to the beer.(new definition of shrinkage) Can’t be all
that bad though because we are heading for our five miler this
am. Sorry I can’t forward the photos but there wasn’t
any blood so not exciting. Tampa does a terrific job of putting
this on and my hat goes out to the thousands of volunteers.

Triathlon Club in Sudbury?
by Jason Wicke
Hello!
Mike Hay, Steve Tremblay and I were discussing the need for
a triathlon
club in Sudbury. There seems to be a good group of us triathletes
in the
Sudbury area, but we have no clue of who we are and what we
are doing.
Furthermore, there are several who are looking for some guidance
as to
setting up a training program, etc.
Here is what we have discussed so far:
1) the club will be open to anyone interested in triathlons
that does not
need adult supervision
2) we are not here to provide one on one coaching for the
entire season
3) we will sit down with each of you to discuss and map out
a training plan
based on your goals, your time commitment, your ability, what
races you
would like to attend, peak for, etc.
4) we will set up weekly programs for groups (according to
ability, race
distance, etc.)
5) we will set up training clinics for technique development,
race
strategies, etc.
6) we will provide contacts so that we can all go down to
races and enjoy
each other's company (i.e. stay at the same hotel, campsite,
etc.)
7) We are thinking of charging an outrageous amount of money
for joining the
club... somewhere around $50 (and max $100) for the entire
year.
Obviously there is a lot more to discuss and solidify. Right
now, we would
like to know how many people would be interested in joining
such a club.
If you are interested, please send me an email with the following
information:
Name, age, and BRIEF description of your experience (triathlon
or otherwise)
and what distances you would like to race, any other questions
you may have!
If you do not plan on racing and would like to join, that
is fine!!!
We are planning a meeting this
Friday at 8:00 pm at the Banuk Lounge
(main foyer) at the Laurentian pool. If there are too many
of you that
can't make it, we will change the date.
Please send me an email if you CAN'T make it!

North News - by Dick

Track North's
Woods Wins OUA Indoor Track Gold.
Track North Athletic Club's Madeleine Woods, competing for
the University of Windsor, ran to a gold medal at the Ontario
University (OUA) Indoor Track and Field Championships this
weekend in Windsor.
Woods, a third year Kinesiology student, posted a winning
time of 1 minute 32.22 seconds. This result ranks Woods
first in the Canadian Inter-University (CIS) rankings. Woods
also finished 4th in the 1000m event with a final time of
2 minutes 56.08 seconds.
Track North coach, Darren Jermyn, commented, "Madeleine
has taken her running to a whole new level. She had a breakthrough
season last summer as she made the transition to running
middle distance, but this result is simply incredible. She
went into this meet as the number one seed and obviously
handled the pressure well - not only did she win gold, but
she ran 2 seconds faster than her previous best over the
distance."
Track North's Tammy Dufresne, also competing for the University
of Windsor, finished 6th in the 600m event in a time of
1 minute 36.70 seconds and was also a member of the gold
medal winning 4 X 400m and 4 X 800m relay teams.
Woods and Dufresne will now compete at the CIS Championships
to be held in Saskatoon, March 9th through 11th.
LU's Sabel Cracks
Top 10 at Ontario University Track Championships
Laurentian University's Candie Sabel (Sudbury, ON) finished
10th in the 600m event at the Ontario University Indoor
Track and Field Championships, contested this weekend in
Windsor.
Sabel's time of 1minute 39.95 seconds was a two second personal
best. Noted Sabel following the race, "I was ranked
14th going into the meet, so I'm extremely happy with this
result. My training this season has been solid and I look
forward to moving up in the rankings next year"
"Candie had a fantastic season and she it put it all
together this weekend with a huge performance. She left
it all on the track," commented Laurentian coach, Darren
Jermyn. Sabel also competed in the 300m event, finishing
18th in a time of 44.66 seconds.
Lindsy McNicholl (Capreol, ON) also competed, finishing
13th in the women's 3000m event with a time of 11 minutes
23.78 seconds.
Hamilton Spectator
Games
Kaitlyn Tallman finished 3rd in the Open Girls 1500m event
on the "boards" (146m indoor track) at the Hamilton
Indoor Games finishing in a time of 4:52.11.

TNOR/LU Practices
- Next Three Weeks
Darren is unavailable to conduct Friday March 3rd's Sprint
Practice and Dick will be "roughing" it in Spain
with Terry for a few weeks so Friday's practice is cancelled
(Dick and Terry will be gone from March 3rd to March 19th,
but will check email on occasion. Serena J will be housesitting
and will have phone numbers if there's an emergency).
Darren will be at Lockerby next Monday, March 6th and Friday,
March 10th for practice at 4:45pm. There will be no organized
practice next Wednesday.
Formal practices will also not be held at Lockerby during
the March Break - March 13-17th - your coach will forward
you workouts or alternate meeting dates/times.
Also - I saw 2 backhoes starting to clear the area for our
INDOOR TRACK today behind the Ben Avery Building at LU.
Connor and Mia Jermyn will be inspecting the site daily
as part of their daycare routine!!! Please forward any site
inquiries to them.

Welcome
to Mike's Tri Adventure
My name
is Mike Coughlin and I am a triathlete from Sudbury,
Ontario, Canada. In 2001 I started training for
triathlons for fun and fitness. I discovered that
the sport also provides great opportunities to learn
about yourself and meet fascinating people.
This
winter, I decided to follow my triathlon dreams
and train full time for 5 months, visiting several
triathlon hotbeds and training my body and mind
to be stronger than ever. Along the way I look forward
to meeting interesting people, seeing some new places
and taking the experiences as they come. I designed
this website to write about these experiences for
myself, friends and family. |

Taper Time!!
Well, I am finally here in Taupo on the North Island of
New Zealand where Ironman New Zealand takes place in 2
days time. I have been a little slack on the updates lately
- pretty typical during an Ironman build period for me.
Now that all the hard work is done,if I have managed my
taper right I should be in good shape for Saturday's race
