The Goofy Challenge

By Karen Beaulieu

The marathon was tons of fun. There were way too many runners for the half marathon. Let me re-phrase that.. tooooo many darn walkers mixed in with all the runners.
There were approximately 16,000 people all jammed in to one start area. Chaotic!
It's a good thing our plan was to take it easy because we were so far back nothing was going to happen. The road did not seem too wide and everywhere we tried to go around there was someone else. I just ran in the median in the grass as this was the only area not congested.
That actually worked out good as it was easier on my back than the pavement. The bad part was it was pitch dark , no street lights and people were throwing clothes left and right. I had a couple of clothes(ha ha) calls but managed to stay upright. The smart people were wearing headlamps. Wimps.. Bev and I stopped to take pictures with any characters we seen and had a great run. As you know we ran very conservatively (2hrs. plus) and knew the full would be fine except for that darn 6am. start again.
I figured because I was going to Florida it would be warm but it was actually cool and I was glad I had gloves to keep warm. We spent three days to get back to Tennessee, got in Tues. late afternoon, left Thurs. night for Orlando and got there Fri. afternoon. It seemed like i spent a week in the car then suddenly had to run a marathon. Whew! that was nuts.

Marathon morning came far too early for me. If we had stayed on disney resort we would have had to catch the bus at 4am. Thank god we did not and drove ourselves. We got to leave at 5. It was just above freezing and a little nippy but we huddled in the crowd for warmth. I was in A corral but went with Bev in G. The marathon had 2 start areas that converged at the 3 mile mark. They should have started the half this way too.
The races are both started after the fireworks which is really nice. The marathon was not as chaotic so it was easier to negotiate around runners. Of course we had to stop and take pictures again and I lined up once to use a porta potti. We took 27 pictures, one bathroom break and still managed to come in just under 4hrs. That was pretty good.
At the 20 mile mark I decided to pick up the pace as we were feeling so good. I think around 22 Bev was falling back a bit but i did not want to slow up and I knew she was just behind. It,s funny because you hear people saying "wow look at 1480" she's flying or whatever they are sying and you let it get to your head and you try to run harder and keep blowing past people then the 25 mile marker comes up and the bottom falls out...
Around the 25 mark the clock showed 3:50 and change so I thought wow I can come in under 4 hrs. One mile left, 10 minutes to run it no problem. I can do a mile in less than 10 minutes. Reality check......I almost did not make it 'cuz I was so busy showing off earlier, yeah I'm the man (ha ha) That last mile was a killer and I almost lost it. I focused on that clock , pumped my arms and legs, prayed they would not fail me and ran like hell. Sheila that is what you have to do in Austin. Put your head down, pump those arms and fly girl all the way to Boston. I will be thinking of you the whole time you are running, so you dig and get to Boston with Vince.
The Goofy Challenge is a lot of fun and would recommend everyone do it once. Three great medals and two awesome running shirts are nice mementos. Of course I did pay $170 for the darn things but it was all worth the experience.
I hope that this is easier for you to read Mauro.
Now it is on to an Ultra... Best of luck to Sheila and Monique in Austin xoxo

February 4, 2005           4th Annual Run in Memory of Kurt Gelbhaar

On Saturday, February 4, the Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club will hosting our fourth annual Run in Memory of Kurt Gelbhaar.

Kurt died suddenly on Tuesday, January 29, 2002. He was in his 79th year and still running competitively. He was a mentor and inspiration to most local runners and it is fitting his actions be remembered.

The Run will be very informal. There will be no set distances and it is not a race. We will meet in the lobby of the Cambrian Fitness Centre off Lorne St. at 9:00 am . The run will start at approximately 9:15 am and will proceed at a leisurely pace towards Bell Park and Science North. Runners are free to go whatever distance appeals to them or fits their schedule but ALL runners will be encouraged to stick together for the first 1/2 hour.

Run Club Update - by Lise Edwards

The Running Room Club Update: January 17, 2006
Sudbury Store (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

Good Afternoon,

Great news for anyone looking for the updated models for Asics, Mizuno and Saucony...they are in and I have to admit that I've spent the last few shifts trying on the new models, they have improved the looks of some, comfort in some, but the prices have not changed much :) We are still waiting to see what New Balance, Nike and Adidas have to offer this season...I'll be sure to keep you posted.

Our clinics have started in full force, the walk half-marathon started last night with a motivated group of women, twelve in all with a few more thinking about joining. What a great way to stay fit in the winter and enjoy the outdoors and group support. The registration for this clinic will be open for two more weeks for anyone interested in a walking challenge.

Our 1/2 Marathon Run and Marathon Run clinics start this Thursday with Frank Lesk leading the half marathoners and Lise Edwards leading the marathoners through the next 18 weeks of instruction to get to our goal events including our newest local event Sudbury Rocks Marathon. We also have Jan Weers and Steve Fessenden helping out as group leaders. Come out for the first night and see if this is just what the doctor ordered to get through the winter blahs. We'll be talking about what the clinic has to offer and what is included in the $74.89 price.

Just a quick reminder that the practice sessions are only canceled for freezing rain and thunder storms, otherwise we are running in the snow, cold, rain, sun ...what a thought :)

Mike's Tri Adventure

- by Mike Coughlin

Mike's TRi Website

Welcome to Mike's Tri Adventure

My name is Mike Coughlin and I am a triathlete from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. In 2001 I started training for triathlons for fun and fitness. I discovered that the sport also provides great opportunities to learn about yourself and meet fascinating people.

This winter, I decided to follow my triathlon dreams and train full time for 5 months, visiting several triathlon hotbeds and training my body and mind to be stronger than ever. Along the way I look forward to meeting interesting people, seeing some new places and taking the experiences as they come. I designed this website to write about these experiences for myself, friends and family.

Epic Camp Days 8, 9 and 10
We are now deep into week 2 of the camp and I am learning why Epic is designed to be 12 days instead of 7. In week one, I was able to push my body to incredible levels of training - to be precise, I logged about 50 hours altogether, hitting weekly totals of 25km of swimming, 1000km of cycling and 90-95km of running for the first time in my life - and all in the same week! Most of the other campers had logged SBR PB's for volume as well.
