Sudbury Rocks!! Membership Renewal

Hello Sudbury Rocks!! Members & Friends

It's the time of year to get your goals in order for the up and coming
running season and for renewing your Sudbury Rocks!! Membership. The cost
this year is again $10 if you don't want a new T-Shirt and $20 if you do. Most of
the proceeds of the membership fees go directly to the cost of maintaining and
updating the website.

New Members are always enthusiastically welcomed!

Please go to the Membership Page for all the details.

Karen Beaulieu does the Goofy Challenge

Our Tennessee Rock!! continues to push the running envelope with out of the ordinary endeavors. And Karen Beaulieu's latest foray in her quest towards Ultras was Walt Disney World's "Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge" last weekend. The challenge is to run a half marathon on Saturday morning and then come out the very next morning and run a marathon.

Karen negotiated the 1/2 very conservatively and then negatively split the marathon. She's definitely ready for the longer distances. Now where's that 50 miler?

Congratulations from the Rocks!! Karen

February 4, 2005           4th Annual Run in Memory of Kurt Gelbhaar

On Saturday, February 4, the Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club will hosting our fourth annual Run in Memory of Kurt Gelbhaar.

Kurt died suddenly on Tuesday, January 29, 2002. He was in his 79th year and still running competitively. He was a mentor and inspiration to most local runners and it is fitting his actions be remembered.

The Run will be very informal. There will be no set distances and it is not a race. We will meet in the lobby of the Cambrian Fitness Centre off Lorne St. at 9:00 am . The run will start at approximately 9:15 am and will proceed at a leisurely pace towards Bell Park and Science North. Runners are free to go whatever distance appeals to them or fits their schedule but ALL runners will be encouraged to stick together for the first 1/2 hour.

Run Club Update - by Lise Edwards

The Running Room Club Update: January 11, 2006
Sudbury Store (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

Greeting fellow walkers and runners,

It looks like we’ve all started working on our New Years Resolutions …our clinics have started in full force and its great to see new faces and some familiar faces getting back into the swing of things. The holidays are over and its time to set new goals for yourself which may include a little more activity, a little more time with friends at the practice sessions where the motivation and positive attitudes are free :)

In the past few months we’ve been missing some of our regular walkers and runners due to the busy holidays, injuries, stress fractures, and I suspect a few may be due to a lack of motivation and are afraid to get started again. We’ve been fortunate this winter has been nice and mild and the evening runs have been very enjoyable. We’d love to see you back out, nothing has really changed, same smiles, same Vince, and same times, only one thing missing…Donna Mae.

Happy Birthday wishes to our good friend Lawrie Oliphant who is celebrating a birthday today…we hope to see you out of that pool running and back on the streets in no time.

INDOOR PRACTICE

OK, here's the deal with regards to the start of indoor practice. Next week, we'll meet at Lockerby Secondary on Wednesday (January 11th), then again on Friday. Practices times are 4:45.

After that, practices will be as follows:

Mondays - 4:45 PM - Lockerby. Stage training and longer endurance conditioning

Wednesdays 4:45 PM - Darren's runners - at the Arena. Dick's runners: on back roads if weather permits. This is for older athletes by invitation. Younger athletes (i.e. elementary school age) have Wednesdsays off.

Fridays - 4:45 PM - Lockerby. Speed, power and technique.

As you can see, we'll now be practicing on Fridays instead of Saturdays.

Mike's Tri Adventure

- by Mike Coughlin

Mike's TRi Website

Welcome to Mike's Tri Adventure

My name is Mike Coughlin and I am a triathlete from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. In 2001 I started training for triathlons for fun and fitness. I discovered that the sport also provides great opportunities to learn about yourself and meet fascinating people.

This winter, I decided to follow my triathlon dreams and train full time for 5 months, visiting several triathlon hotbeds and training my body and mind to be stronger than ever. Along the way I look forward to meeting interesting people, seeing some new places and taking the experiences as they come. I designed this website to write about these experiences for myself, friends and family.

Epic Camp Day 3
Ok, now that was tough....

Our day started early with a 10k run in the trails ("better now than after THIS ride" was the advice). Scott Molina decided to be our tour guide and set a nice comfortable pace. He then proceeded to take us straight up the Conical Hill - a nasty, switchback laden climb up to a lookout. I really should have seen that coming - it is just Scott's style. I must admit though, it was a nice view. I need to start bringing my camera on run workouts out here.
