Important Upcoming Meeting

Cycling Access to Southwest Bypass Interchange

From: Sandra Kleppe [mailto:sandra.kleppe@sympatico.ca]
Sent: Wednesday, November 23, 2005 6:01 AM

Subject: South-west bypass interchange and changing to cycling access?

Below is information about an upcoming meeting. Please share it with your
interest/fitness friends. This development will either benefit or mess up
our access to the long lake area. You may be interested in posting the
notice on your web page.

Many thanks,
See below...

Good news!

Councillor Craig has confirmed a meeting time for residents and other
concerned citizens to meet and discuss issues related to construction of the
south-west bypass interchange at Long Lake Road. As you may have already
noticed, construction has already started!

The meeting will be held on Thursday, December 8, 2005 at 7:00 p.m . in the
Gallery at Countryside Arena. The room holds about 85-100 people
.

Councillor Craig will be present as well as someone else from city planning
department and hopefully a representative from the Ministry of
Transportation. He has asked that we publicize the event through any means
possible and hopes that we will have a good turnout.

Any suggestions on how we should proceed from here? Shall we create a sample
flyer for everyone to distribute in the community? Should we send a similar
email message to all of our contacts?

Thanks,
Marjatta

You Know You Are A Runner When
published on : 8/31/04 somewhere on the Net

You know you are a runner when:

1 - you wear a plastic sports watch with your dress clothes.
you can remember a time from a race 4 years ago, but you can't remember your spouse's birthdays or your anniversary
2 - you are not embarrassed to show someone where your hamstring "really" hurts
3 - you know your resting heart rate, maximum heart rate, and exactly what your heart rate is at all parts of your run
4 - you wear your running shorts underneath your work clothes so that you can quickly get running after work
5 - you love shoes...running shoes.
6 - you own 5 pairs of shoes and only one pair are not running shoes
7 - you won't drive by any running store without a quick look inside
8 - you know exactly how far a kilometer is
9 - you take the day off to watch the Boston Marathon on television
10 - you have more old dirty shoes piled by the door than a farmer
11 - you've seen Chariots of Fire at least 5 times, Prefontain 5 times, Without Limits 5 times and even Personal Best 5 times
12 - you read each month's issue of Runner's World cover to cover within 24 hours
13 - you get excited when you hear that there is a new Gatorade flavor
14 - you not only know how you did in a race, but you know exactly how every other runner finished
15 - you spend at least 25% of your income on running stuff
16 - you drive by a golf course and think what a nice place it would be to run
17 - you wish there was more running on television
18 - you know splits are something that not only cheerleaders care about
19 - you get up earlier to run on the weekends than you do for school/work
20 - you think that the inventor of Powerbar should have his likeness engraved on Mount Rushmore
21 - you have hundreds of safety pins scattered around your house
22 - you have more T-shirts than a souvenir shop
23 - you would stand in line for Bill Rodgers autograph
24 - you know who Bill Rodgers is
25 - you know that there is no such thing as too much pasta!
26 - you install hooks in your shower for wet running clothes
27 - you can't wait for your next birthday so you move into a new age group
28 - you check out the running stores for the new styles
29 - you know that cotton is not the best fabric for running!
30 - someone asks you how your run was, you go into a 10 minutes description of every factor of it
31 - you can use endorphins in a sentence
32 - you can use fartlek in a sentence without laughing
33 - you could watch a whole marathon and not be bored
34 - you enjoy running in the rain and snow
35 - you think of distances in terms of mile/kilometer repeats

And finally from "Big Ed" at Cool Running:

"We know our bodies like no couch potato ever will. You get intimately familiar with every single muscle on a long run, especially those that aren't happy.

Second, we know a secret that the rest of the world doesn't. For every painful run, there are a dozen that feel great. When we're limping around groaning, it's because we've done something a lot of people have no concept of and we know it's worth every ache and pain. It's not that we're happy being in pain, we just know that the pain is worth it for what we have achieved".

Pain fades but glory is forever.

Run Club Update - by Lise Edwards

The Running Room Club Update: November 22, 2005
Sudbury Store (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

Greetings, Running and Walking Enthusiasts!

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Derek Lalonde for breaking the World Record on Tuesday November 15, 2005 running 50km on a treadmill in 3:39:00. I was there to witness the finish and talk about a focused individual...just when you would think a runner would start to slow up he picked up the pace to finish even faster than his goal. Thanks again for your inspiration.

HO! HO! HO!

Polish up your jingle bells and spread some cheer because we are just weeks away from the Santa Shuffle! The Salvation Army is holding the annual Santa Shuffle 5K & Elf Walk 1K on Saturday, December 3 at 10am. Both courses start and end at the Sudbury Running Room, 1984 Regent Street. Join us for holiday running and wintry walking - I guarantee Santa will be there!

Collect pledges and you can earn some great prizes, like T-shirts and Running Room gift certificates! Register as an individual or family, or get together a team (up to 10 people) and challenge other to raise funds for the Salvation Army. Register to run, walk or volunteer online.

Award Grants for Next Generation National Team Members

The Canada Games Council (CGC) and the Foundation for Athletes Sport Training (FAST) have partnered for the second year in order to deliver the Canada Games FAST Track athlete grant. The program will provide direct financial assistance to Canadaís next generation national team athletes to support their training and competition needs. The grant is designed to fill a gap in Canadaís sport system and support Canada Games-level athletes who are targeted and on the pathway to excellence at the national team level.

The Canada Games FAST Track athlete grant will award a minimum of 60 grants for $2000.00 each to next generation national team athletes across Canada. The eligibility criteria and selection process set out below as well as the information received by the applicant on the enclosed application form will be used to determine grant recipients. Athlete performance over the last two competitive seasons will be used as a key indicator for identifying recipients.

Athletes will complete an application form and must return it to the Canada Games FAST Track Selection Committee. Once the Selection Committee has received all applications, the committee will approach the NSOs and/or P/TSOs for endorsement and verification of information on applications. Incomplete application forms will be deemed ineligible and will not be processed. The deadline for application receipt is Friday December 9, 2005, 5:00pm EST. Please see the attached program guidelines for information on eligibility criteria.

We are encouraging online applications this year at:
http://www.canadagames.ca/Content/PathWays/Athlete%20Grant.asp?langid=1

Thanks, and best of luck to your athletes!

Mike's Tri Adventure

- by Mike Coughlin

Mike's TRi Website

Welcome to Mike's Tri Adventure

My name is Mike Coughlin and I am a triathlete from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. In 2001 I started training for triathlons for fun and fitness. I discovered that the sport also provides great opportunities to learn about yourself and meet fascinating people.

This winter, I decided to follow my triathlon dreams and train full time for 5 months, visiting several triathlon hotbeds and training my body and mind to be stronger than ever. Along the way I look forward to meeting interesting people, seeing some new places and taking the experiences as they come. I designed this website to write about these experiences for myself, friends and family.
