New York City Marathon Memories

By Lise Edwards

I'm here reporting as Running Room Sudbury's official New York Marathon correspondent. What a great event. If you would like to do a marathon...just think you will only do one marathon in your life, make it New York City Marathon.

The Expo was great, although I'm happy to report that I did not indulge and spend much time or money at the expo. The flow of traffic was great for race kit pick up, chip registration and then into the expo to check out the goods.

On Saturday the marathon hosted a pasta dinner in Central Park, big tents, waiters in suits and the food was surprisingly good. The flow of participants was great as well, the line seemed to go on forever, but they moved quickly and people were in and out in no time.

Then Sunday morning and marathon day...waiting around didn't seem so bad with bagels, coffee and fruit being served to the runners. Three hours passed quickly when the thought of how great it was to be running the New York City Marathon.

The cannons went off and we were off running through New York City, five boroughs and two million spectators cheering. What an amazing feeling. They were all yelling and cheering, holding signs, handing out paper towels, water, Gatorade, gels, fruit... it was great.

I was there with a group from Sudbury and we agreed to run together with no time lines, cameras in hand and enjoy every minute of the event and that was exactly what we did. The energy from the crowds was amazing, I kept getting chills from the people dancing, bands playing and children slapping hands with the runners, images I won't soon forget.

I finished with a smile on my face holding hands with my running mate for the day Christine. We both agreed that the 5 hours and 15 minutes it took us was well worth it. You felt a little sad at the end that it was all over...okay well I wasn't too sad to get off my feet and get back to the hotel for a shower.

I've had the privilege to run 6 marathons and New York City has got to be by far the most amazing experience.

Hi LU Runners, Friends and Alumni

Here are the Laurentian results from the 2005 CIS Championships in Halfax. Every LU athlete ran a huge season's best and most ran all-time PB's. Even Leila, who was not feeling well, ran close to her all-time best and was 49 seconds faster than at OUA's. Check out the individual times - we've never had so many athletes run so fast in a single race!

Also in the race were Liz Forbes, whose 20th place finish (3rd team) helped the U. of Guelph to a first place overall finish!.

Also, alumni Nat Lefort, running for Laval, placed 97th with a 19:34.

------------------------------------
CIS Cross-Country Championships, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Laurentian University's women's cross-country running team finished their season on a high note, placing 13th this weekend at the National Championships in Halifax.

As they did at the OUA Championships two weeks ago, each member of the Lady Vees ran their season's best, including by a 57-second improvement by Capreol's Lindsy McNicoll, who dropped beneath 19 minutes for the first time and was the second Laurentian scorer.

"The 13th place was what we predicted," said assistant coach, Darren Jermyn. "Our individual times were unbelievably fast. For example, our average time for the course was 19:01, with three girls under 19 minutes and three more under 20 minutes. That's definitely a school record."

"It was a fun course," said second year runner, Kirsti Dolson. "The footing was tricky, with lots of roots and rocks, but the final kilometre was mainly downhill, so the times were fast."

"This squad competes extremely well under pressure," said head coach, Dick Moss. "And they're very young - we only lose one runner next year (Melanie Muise), and most of the team will be around for at least two more years. Next Fall, we're definitely shooting for top-ten."

Individual Results
28, Leila Angrand, 18:10 (Season's best by 49 seconds)
68, Lindsy McNicoll, 18:50 (57 second PB)
73, Kirsti Dolson, 18:54 (Season best by 44 seconds, 2 second PB)
89, Caitlin Tino,19:20 (42 second PB)
103, Marnie Smith,19:49 (52 seconds PB)
106, Natalie Labelle, 19:55 (Season's best by 70 seconds)
109, Melanie Muise, 20:06 (Season's best by 32 seconds)

Notes: The championships included 18 teams, and runners from 24 schools.

Mike's Tri Adventure

- by Mike Coughlin

Mike's TRi Website

Welcome to Mike's Tri Adventure

My name is Mike Coughlin and I am a triathlete from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. In 2001 I started training for triathlons for fun and fitness. I discovered that the sport also provides great opportunities to learn about yourself and meet fascinating people.

This winter, I decided to follow my triathlon dreams and train full time for 5 months, visiting several triathlon hotbeds and training my body and mind to be stronger than ever. Along the way I look forward to meeting interesting people, seeing some new places and taking the experiences as they come. I designed this website to write about these experiences for myself, friends and family.
