Running Room's "Haunted Hat Run"

by Lise Edwards

Thank you for your great Halloween Spirit as we had a very successful Haunted Hat Walk/Run on Sunday at our practice session. 60 participants and everyone had a hat for our group photo. Thank you to Candice Stoughton and Andrea Ford for bringing in the goodies. I had the pleasure of snacking all day on the sweets.

Back in the Smokies

by Karen Beaulieu

I know I said I did not want to go back but I broke down. I got a call late Sat. night to meet for a smokie jaunt so I bit. It is cold here in the morning just like back home. It is 32 in the mornings and chillier in the mountains so I hate getting up too early .Last week it was in the low 40's as our high so it made for some chilly runs too early in the season. Wasn't I just whining about how damn hot it was and could not wait for cooler weather. I wanted cooler not colder weather. The thermometer is thankfully crawling up again. Anyway's back to the smokies. It was a different route but of course the first three miles are ,you guessed it, uphill. I hate starting up when you are not warmed up but then you are so thankful when you reach flat ground. As I am running up I am asking myself why I came as I don't need, let alone want, to do this run. But then we got to a beautiful view and it was so sunny that I forgot everything else and just decided to enjoy the run. Not to say that I did not whine about any other of the climbs but nobody pays any attention to me. They just keep telling me I can always go back to my sissy road running. Actually if you can run southfork you can do this trail no problem. The climbing was nothing compared to the last run. So Monique you could run here with me. March break........David, the kids, Oscar......wah. It was a great run of 14.7 miles and the best part of running in the smokies is there is always a long descent back to the finish. No one brought a camera this time so next time I will bring one so you can see what will happen if you fall the wrong way. You will have a long way to go before you are wrapped around a tree. It is such a beautiful place to run and I will always treasure these runs when I am back home. This is what I will miss the most about Tennessee, beautiful trail running. I think I am setting my sights on doing my first ultra in Feb. probably Alabama. Ben is looking for one that is not too technical for my first. Two weeks ago we ran that 6hr. 22miler and I ran 11and 14. I have figured out that I can still run long after a marathon and not be dead. So what was I whining about before. You don't necessarily have to take a long down time after a marathon. I'll see how I feel after N.Y. Looking forward to seeing everyone in the big apple..Karen yeehaw

Volunteers Needed for Sudbury Fitness Challenge

by John Leonard

The Sudbury Fitness Challenge is looking for some enthusiastic new
volunteers to take over positions at the executive level. Some of our hard
working executive are moving on or changing positions within the committee.
We need you to keep this exciting fitness series going. This year (2005) all
events were up in attendance and we expect larger crowds again in 2006. Get
involved and make a difference in your community and help others achieve
their fitness goals. These positions are flexible enough that you can still
participate in events if desired. It only takes a few hours a month and you
can have a say in bringing your Sudbury Fitness Challenge in the direction
you think we need to go in order to make this a fun, family fitness event
series. No experience is necessary. We need people in all areas such as
president, race director, volunteer coordinator, secretary, treasurer,
points and awards etc. We also need assistant and or alternates in all
categories to spread out the work load and to avoid burnout by only a few
individuals. Check the website for more info. Please also forward this email
to anyone else you think might be interested. Email me or call me back if
you think you can contribute. Thanks, John Leonard.

Track North News - by Dick Moss

Tuesday, November 01, 2005

Well, the great October baby race has come to an end, with Brenda Beavers unleashing one of her tremendous patented finishing kicks and delivering twins. Here are the details, but Brenda now has a complete 4 x 800m team!

Congrats Brenda!!

The twins have arrived. I had them 5 weeks early by C section on 10/14/05. They are in the neonatal ICU for observation and growing time as they put it. Should be home with me soon. We named them Benjamin Michael 4 LBS 5 oz and Spencer William 5 lbs, 2 oz. Identical twin boys! Len nick named Ben "shark bite" because he has a slight notch on his right ear that helps us tell them apart. We are all doing well and are looking forward to taking to boys home soon. Brenda

OUA XC Running Championships - Kingston ON, October 29, 2005

Strong team running helped a gutsy Laurentian Women's Cross-Country Running Team post a sixth-place finish at the Ontario University Championships this weekend. Contested on Kingston's picturesque Fort Henry field, it was Laurentian's second-best finish in school history and an improvement over last year's ninth-place position.

Having suffered a slew of pre-season injuries, Laurentian was a dark horse in the 15-team championship-four of the squads they beat had finished ahead of them in previous races, including York, ranked top-ten in the country coming into the event.

"The girls did a great job of helping each other during the race," said head coach, Dick Moss. "And all seven runners posted a personal best for the course. Lindsy McNicoll, for example, was almost a minute faster than she was here only two weeks ago.

"It has been a difficult season, because of injuries and illnesses, and some of the girls have raced sparingly," said Moss. " For example, it was only the second race of the year for Leila Angrand. She was rusty, but she'll improve quickly once she back into a regular program."

Laurentian will compete in the CIS Championships in Halifax in two weeks.

Points of Interest:
* In basketball terms, this finish would be akin to a bronze medal in the OUA East division.
* Pre-Season goal for the Voyageurs was 6th in the OUA.
* Laurentian placed 9th in the OUA last year and 13th in the CIS Championships.

Laurentian Scores
13. Leila Angrand, 18:59
30. Kirsti Dolson, 19:37
36. Lindsy McNicoll, 19:47
42, Caitlin Tino, 20:02
55. Melanie Muise, 20:38
58. Marnie Smith, 20:43
68.Natalie Labelle, 21:05

Team Scores
1. Guelph
2. Toronto
3. Western
4. Windsor
5. Queens
6. Laurentian
7. York
8. Ottawa
9. Laurier
10. Waterloo
