Weekend Events

October 8, 2005 Xterra 15k

XTERRA SCRAMBLE KNOXVILLE 15K
OAK RIDGE, TN OCTOBER 8, 2005 8:30 am

By Karen Beaulieu (Rocks!! Tennessee Correspondent)

Hey Vince just thought I would let you know how the xterra went. It rained for 2 days before the event so I don't know if that scared people away or maybe a lot of the trail runners decided to do the stump jump, who knows. There was a small turnout 40 registered and 2 bandits. Because of the turnout almost everyone was able to get a medal. The winning women's time was 1:10 and change, the men's was 52 and change or something like that. It was a tough and challenging course. Up down all the way except for the last mile. Just before mile 5 there was a looong snaking road that went on for too long, someone said it was a mile but i think it just felt like that and worst. Just before mile 8 there was a very rocky, treacherous part on a bit of an incline. At that point you were so tired that you had to pick your way up carefully so thankfully it did not last long. I was fourth female overall up until the 6th mile but there was a long downhill that was rocky and full of crevasses and you know I love to run downhill. While everyone else was carefully running down I just charged down that hill and did not even think about falling. This gave me an opportunity to move into third female position which I held till the end. I'm sure if that hill was not there I would not have overtaken Sally as she is running very well this year. She is in the 50-55 bracket but she is a great trail runner. Unfortunately for her she is cautious on the downhills and I'm not. Ben is always telling me it is going to hurt a lot when I fall but until then I will keep having fun as that is the best part of trail running. It was a tough race but worth the run and the best part of all was my leg only started to hurt the last quarter mile. All in all a great day was had. .Next Sunday I am trail running in the smokies on what is going to be tough trail. Apparently there is going to be some tough climbing involved. The route is approximately 22 miles, I will let you know how I fare. Hope all is well with you and Lise and that you are not stretching yourself too thin .(with work and all not eating) Take care see you two in New York

The Rainbow Routes Association's first Annual Turkey Trott 5km Trail Run got underway this weekend at Fielding Memorial Park. The run was carried out to showcase the new Kelly Lake Trail which will be part of the Trans Canada Trail System. The Organizers intend to move this event to other trails in the future to promote public awareness.

Following opening ceremonies, 64 walkers, walk/runners, and runners attacked the course under a cloudless sky with fall colours close to peak. And participants covered all speed ranges. There were folks trudging along south of 5km/ hour and one ringer cruised north of 18 km/ hour - on a technical course. Thank you Jamie Black for bringing your Toronto Marathon winner friend up to show us what a good turn over looks like.

Yes, Danny Kassup, - winner of last year's Scotia Bank Marathon (2:14) - set a blistering pace after cruising the first km. to cross the line in a very fast 16:36. Jamie Black was a distant second (17:59 with Mike Hay breathing down his neck (18:05).

Christine Keenan was first Lady (22:07), Kimberly Tobin was 2nd (23:49) and Helen Francis was 3rd (24:49)

Our Youth winner was Andrew Kendall (23:54) with Sebastien Diebel 2nd (24:30) and Nicholas Wilson 3rd (23:46).

Dianne Carriere led the Walkers (41:31) pacing 2nd place Andy Szanto to a 41:32. Janet Law came 3rd in 44:26.

Good going to the Organizers - especially Carol Coffyn and Ted Keenan - for putting together a high quality event. All locals should put this run on their list for next year. I believe it will be in Azilda on a very scenic new trail.

October 9, Royal Victoria Marathon

by Steve Fessenden (Rocks!! Chelmsford)

Hi Mike, Jan and Vince. Thank you to all of you for
helping me complete my first marathon. My watch time
was 3:32:44. I am even more motivated to improve on
that time. Race conditions were cloudy and 10C. As the
race went on the weather warmed to 15C. The wind was
an issue along the ocean coast but not too bad until
the 37km mark when the temperature dropped. My split
time at 21.1km was 1:39 something, so I still had a
chance for 3:20:59. I managed to maintain Boston pace
up to 25km, then I began to feel it in the legs and
the pace dropped off. MY last 21.1km was in around
1:53:something. The official results will be posted
around 3:00pm Victoria time. I felt okay during the
race but very tired around 37km. I walked through the
water stations at 37 and 39km and drank lots. That
helped and I ran the last 2.2km with a little more
energy. After the race my legs were a little wobbly
but the biggest problem was my shivering. I waited fro
my friend Denise to cross, she had a PB at 3:53 and
qualified for Boston 2007. She said I was blue and
needed to go to the Medical tent. I ended up with
hypothermia (hyper - anyway's too cold!) and the
wrapped me in warm blankets until my body temperature
rose to normal. Then they let me go and I felt fine.
Denise and I biked home pretty happy (15 minute bike)
and I am looking forward to seeing you and thanking
you all in person. Have a great Thanksgiving.
Steve :)

October 10, 2005 Walden Turkey Gobbler

Walden Cross Country Fitness Club 4th Annual Turkey Gobbler 2005

by Patti Kitler

Thanksgiving is the time to bring family and friends together. Walden’s 4th Annual Turkey Gobbler did just that. This year many names and faces were familiar. Did you know Jennifer Kay has completed all four runs. We had one family with eleven participating, a family of six from Grandma down to her grandchildren back for more and many more who have helped make our Annual event a success.

A new record of participants in the 6km run (37) and the 3km run (46) and (7) participants in the1km were faster. Thanks to the family members who came out to watch and helped pitch in barbecuing and writing down bibs.

WCCFC wants to be known in the community as the club which believes in participation at all levels.

Vince adds: And for just a buck entry (kids) and only $5 (adults), we got an organized walk/run on excellent trails with timed results plus a bonus BBQ with hot dogs, sausages, hamburgers, muffins and drinks. How awesome is that! I'll return next year and I encourage others to check out these scenic trails.

Note: From now on the 3km loop trail will be lit until 8:00 pm on Wednesday evenings for those who wish to go for a nice trail walk or run.

What a great weekend, great weather. The Turkey Trott went very well and congratulations to the winners of the event who went home with a turkey.

Toronto International Marathon is coming up this weekend for anyone looking for a great and challenging marathon, they also have a half marathon and a 5k. Registration will be open at the Expo until closing Saturday October 15, 2005.

We have a few women from our Half Marathon walking clinic that are going to walk the Toronto International Half Marathon and we wish them all the best.

If you are looking to register for the Niagara Fallsview Marathon in Niagara Falls on Sunday October 23, 2005 the cutoff for the registration for the marathon is Wednesday October 12, 2005. This International Marathon also hosts a half marathon, half marathon walk and 5k run.

Both Donna and I have made this event a tradition and have enjoyed the full marathon, half marathon and 5k events. This is a beautiful run/walk along the Niagara Parkway and the view is beautiful with amazing estates along the parkway. You will see many familiar faces are we have our 1/2 marathon walkers and 1/2 marathon runners heading out along with many local runners and walkers.

The Running Room will be hosting a booth at the Expo so don't forget to stop by and visit John Stanton and the great team helping out with the event.

We have a few local events coming up that the Running Room is hosting... the Santa Shuffle and our Resolution Run. The Resolution Run registration gift this year is a great 10:1 watch. The watch is valued at 49.99 and early registration is $40.
