Mike Hay, Mike Coughlin,Steve Tremblay and Jack Kosmerly represented
our community at this years' Ironman USA in Lake Placid, New York.
Mike Hay placed a high third in his age group and 16th overall.
Mike Coughlin learned the mountains are probably tougher than
racing in Wisconsin(and maybe bike problems). Steve Tremblay did
well despite a slow start and Jack Kosmerly found out that Ironman's
are never over until the last metre of the marathon is complete.
Congratulations guys on your excellent efforts.

Two Rocks!!, Laura Thaxter and Drew Anderson, plus three other locals took
on the Bala Falls Tri this weekend. Rumour has it that Drew was
happy with his bike time but Laura was not. It was pointed out
to Laura that lap repeats at Delki Dozzi and pace training with
the Cycling Club would increase her level of contentment with
the cycle time. Unfortunately the road to continuous improvement
rarely has a tailwind and always has hills. But don't forget the
old adage. Hills and the wind are our friends!
Good going everyone and especially you Laura.

Jan Weeres, A Sudbury Rock!! Core Member,
and martin Parnell , our Western Rocks!! Correspondent, competed
on Saturday at the World Masters Games in Edmonton in the Olympic
Distance Triathlon. Jan finished a very respectable 283rd place
with an overall time of 2:52:09. and Martin was just ahead in
2:28:41. Congratulations Jan and Martin. Jan, your competition
resume is becoming lengthly and varied. You are definitely a role
model for the Rocks!! And it was good to see you're still in action
Martin. Obviously the Tour d'Afrique did not totally turn you
against biking.

Jan Weeres describes her experience:
Greetings
from Edmonton!! Hi,Vince, thought I would send you a note on my
experience at the Summer Games. It was great!! Everything I thought
it would
be and more. I met all kinds of people from all over the world.
One of them
happened to be Martin Parnell! Brent and I ran into him at the
expo. It was
great to see him and catch up on each others lives. Martin was
also
competing in the Tri.
The day before the tri I went for a tour of the bike course. There
were
hundreds of us being taken on the course with a police escort
as only one
side of the road was closed that day. As I was waiting for the
bike to begin
(I had just clipped into my pedals) this HUGE guy fell off his
bike and on
to me. Down I went! I cut my right ankle on my cassette, had a
huge hematoma
on my right quad and bent my rear derailer slightly. Owww! But
up I got and
dusted my self off. I rode the course carefully as I wasn't sure
how my bike
and body was. When I got back I took my bike to a bike tech on
site and he
was able to get my bike back in good working order. My body was
pretty sore,
but I wasn't going to let it get to me. I checked my bike in to
transition
and then went to get body marked (they did it the day before,
great idea!).
Took a look at the swim course... it was a duck pond. The only
time swimming
is allowed is when there is a triathlon. they chlorinate the water
heavily
(the first year they had a tri all the athletes ended up with
swimmers
itch!! hence the chlorination). Anhooo.
Went to opening ceramonies that evening
at Commenwealth Stadium. It was
amazing!!! Spectacular!! 20+thousand athletes from all over the
world. I sat
next to a man ,Scott, 64 years young and had just started doing
tri's the
year before. Told me he would see me in Sydney in 2009!!! That
is
inspiring!! Went home and to bed, had a good sleep.
Woke up to heavy rain and high winds. I was a little concerned
with the bike
course,as there was a very steep curving part of the course. As
it turned
out the rain let up and the pavement was pretty dry.
I didn't really get nervous until the horn
went off for the swim. Hit the
water fast and guess what...I could'nt breathe. It took about
75m to settle
in. The course was 2 laps, you had to get out of the water and
then back in.
My second lap was better. Out of the swim and on to the bike.
It was a long
distance from the swim to bike transition. On to the bike. It
was 4- 10k
laps, over the Saskatchewan River. It had fairly steep climbs
but awesome
descents!! The wind however was BRUTAL!!! The first time I rode
across the
Sask. River bridge the cross winds almost knocked me over. I could
see other
athletes struggling with the same issues. Came off my bike feeling
strong
and on the run. The run was flat, thank God, as the winds were
still a
factor. Finished the run tired but happy. My goal was to finish
in the top
ten in my age group and under 3 hours. I finished 8/24 in a time
of 2:52 and
finished 286 out of 900. Mission accomplished!!!!! It was a great
time.
Brent was such a good pit crew, very supportive, kept me on task
as I was
preparing. Now I am taking a break from training and spend the
rest of the
week being tourists in Alberta!!! We'll be back in Sudbury on
August 31st.
See you then!! Jan

Lisa just couldn't recover from her achilles
strain, so wasn't able to race in Belgium.
New Dog
Thank you all for the input in the Name the New Moss Dog
contest. After sifting through about 50 prospective names,
including those with a running twist (Mondo, Ouita etc),
a Pirate angle (she has a little black mask over her eyes:
Pirate, Bandit etc), and a cow motif (she has black spots
like a cow: Jersey, Guernsey) and then just plain names
(Kiwi, Dolly, etc), we've settled on Dixie, well, just because
she seems like a Dixie (cute little southern gal, with a
cow name).
Who came up with Dixie? Was it Dana?
Cheers, Dick
