Rocks!! Win in Massey

The Marathon

Conditions may have been hot and steamy but that only pushed our Cobourg Rock!! to a higher level and Ken Stubbings crossed the line in the Massey Marathon first in a time of 3:00:47 followed closely by Clayton Sloss from Paris, On. in 3:01:19. Third male was Marc Lester from Middleville Michigan in 3:07:56. This was Ken's first marathon win. He came 2nd here last year in a time of 2:54 and third overall (2:55:17) in last years' inuagural PEC Marathon.

Angela Batsford from Callender was first female overall by a country mile (3:06:38). Jennifer Ellen Grant from the Soo was second in 3:24:31 and Elaine Levellee from Toronto took the third spot (3:35:22)

Karen Beaulieu and Monique Fournier (Rocks!!) ran tactically conservative paces and both finished strong in 4:15.

The 1/2 Marathon

John Graber from Toronto was the overall winner (1:17:16) but two Sudbury Rocks!! were hot on his heals as Frank Lesk from Sudbury (1:23:50) and Shawn Schryer from Sudbury (1:25:13) came second and third.

Anne Lamontagne from Timmins (1:35:43) was the overall female winner. Kary Oliver from Skead (1:37:00) came second and Lindsay McNicoll from Capreol (1:37:36) captured third.

Twenty-two Sudbury Rocks!! members entered the 1/2 and, of course, everyone performed very well. Of special note, this was Lorna Scovilles's first 1/2 but probably not her last and Becky Olacke's first (she won her age group). Tawny Sauve and Celena Leonard achieved their best times in a 1/2 and Lise Perdue performed her first pacing duties.

The Running Room's 1/2 marathon training group attacked the course in a fearless manner and all finished strongly thanks to their excellent training and the coaching of Frank Lesk.

Congratulations to all runners in both events. The day was hot and humid but I didn't see anybody unable to finish. Runners/Walkers spanned finishing times from 1:17 in the 1/2 to 7+ hours in the marathon and they all persevered.

Thank you to Elizabeth and Les Gamble for organizing and putting a first class event. We'll be back next year.

Please read a couple of Rocks!! run reflections below:

Ken Stubbings writes: Hello everyone,

This year's Massey Marathon was my 10th marathon. I still say you northern folks hold a very excellent event. To date, Massey is number one on my list. I invited my friend Kim Nimmo to Massey this year. She has been trying to qualify for Boston and was coming up short with her times. I told her Massey is a nice flat scenic course with plenty of water stations and prizes. The organizers and volunteers make the day very enjoyable. Kim fell short in her qualifying time again due to a past injury bothering her. However, she was in good spirits because she loved the event. She felt very welcome and relaxed.

Here is how the race went for me. At the start line, the coach tells me I stand a very good chance of winning and should be on the start line. Number one rule is to do what the coach says. My plan this year is to start the run on a sub 3 hour marathon. If I cannot keep on pace due to the heat, my plan was to finish at 3 hours. During the first 21km I have no idea who is running the full and half. I get passed by this woman (the shame of it) on the west leg of the route. I figure, well, she must be doing the half. When I get to the half way point, I catch up to this woman. We both turn right to continue to do the full marathon (whew, I regained my dignity). She tells me there is one guy ahead of us. He is nowhere in sight. He is really moving. I see him for the first time after he has gone around the first turn around. He has to be 0.5 km in front. I figured then, I will be in second place again this year. I never see this guy again until after he goes around the second turn around. He still has a good distance on me. That is until he slammed into the wall between 35 and 36km. I tried to motivate him to keep going, but he crashed. I am now in first place and the pressure is really on because the next guy behind me had made some significant gains during the second half. Now my time was not important. It was that "Massey Signature Stool" that was on my mind. Heat!!! What heat????? Get that stool!!

The race really begins in the distance from your longest long run and the finish line of the marathon. This year I got my cake (by finishing in my goal time) with icing (by finishing first place).

Lynn has now completed her 4th half marathon. Thanks Lise, for keeping Lynn company. It was not her finest two hours, but you made the trip enjoyable for her. She accomplished the best she could do for the day. She is going to run the PEC Half Marathon in October when the weather will hopefully be cooler.

As always, the best part of the event is the party after. Lynn and I had a very enjoyable time. Thank you Louie and Maureen, for inviting us to the camp. A special thanks to Vince and Lise for your hospitality. You always make us feel welcome.

Well I guess the next stop for us as a group will be New York. For those of you crashing at our house before and after your bus ride, Lynn and I are looking forward to you coming.

Ken

Sheila Yaw MacLean writes:

What would we do without the Massey 1/2 and Full Marathon??? Sleep in late
the third Sunday in July......not a good answer. I struggled for a long
time trying to decide whether I could do Massey this year. Becky, our
Masters Swim coach, who started running a few months ago and is now very
much into triathlons, wanted me to pace her in her first 1/2 Marathon in
Massey. As her training improved and mine went downhill because I've been
putting many long slow miles on my new Marinoni touring bike, (that's my
story and I'm sticking to it) I really started to question whether I could
actually accomplish that request. I finally registered 3 days before the
big event knowing full well that Little Becky was going to leave me in her
dust. As it turned out my day was not to end trying to keep up with Becky
(which I couldn't) I also had to get in a 3 - 4 hour bike ride. Maureen and
Louis Moustgaard invited everyone out to their camp on Lake Penage after the
marathon so my plan was to do the 1/2 marathon then bike to their camp.
What a way to get a long ride in. The marathon was a struggle for me but
thanks to Monique, who kept me happy for the first little while and David,
who kept checking up on me on his bike and Karen, who actually paced Becky I
did finish, yes inhaling Becky's dust. Becky came first in her age
group...way to go girl...only 19 and already has the prized Massey Stool.
What's with that Vince???

Next came the bike ride.....right after we had our fill of pancakes. As it
turned out I had company during the bike ride. Thanks to Brent Walker, who
also came first in his age group (another stool Vince) - note: vince perdue has been running Massey forever and has never won the coveted stool - and Becky for riding
with me. It was a great ride in spite of the traffic and rain. I'm sure I
held both of them back. We arrived at the Moustgaard's very happy and with
a feeling of accomplishment. Thanks to Maureen and Louis for a great day
and to everyone for the send off to my big adventure (see Sheila Bikes the Orient Express).
You will all be in my thoughts.

I also what to say thank you to everyone for all the big hugs, support and
encouragement I received this past year. No words can ever express how I
feel. I am so lucky to have you as friends. Dan always said that our
running friends were the most caring and compassionate people he had ever
met. I think he liked the hugs the best. It's amazing how a group of
strangers got together not so long ago and formed such a loving bond. As I
am on this next adventure in my life I will definitely think about how
fortunate I was and am to have you in my life and to be a part of yours.

Sheila

Other Weekend Results

Ian McCloy Island Swim - July 17

Approximately 90 competitors hit the water on Sunday at 10:30 am at Laurentian Beach. This was way up from 56 entries last year. Thanks to Laura Young and the Sudbury Fitness Challenge for promoting the event. And good going everybody.

Unfortunately no results were made available at this time.

20 Minute Challenge - July 20

Running Room Canada's 21rst Anniversary was today and this was the second year they celebrated with a 20 Minute Run/Walk Challenge for anyone willing to go out for the twenty minutes. Approximately 200 people showed up at the Sudbury location and all were treated to a free technical hat, sweets and drinks. After a quick pep talk all were sent down Loach's Road for their Challenge. And all returned to the store to eat more, drink more and discuss passing strategies on the streets. It was quite a success and you should book the date as we'll be doing it all over again next year.

Thanks to Donna, Lise and Running Room Staff members for putting on a great event.
