Suzanne Dionne Travels to Sun Peaks for Jo's 10k

by Suzanne Dionne

Hello All,

I went on a holiday to the Okanagan Valley with Elle. My friend Nicole who I encouraged to join a running group and start running registered us for a 10km race for July 02 at the Mountain Resort at Sun Peaks.
It started with a huge pep rally with dancing and jumping I have never seen anything like it and if you want to bring up the website there are some pretty good pictures.
It was a mass start with 5km race runners also. I started at the back thinking it would move pretty quick but at the clock as I walked by it was at 16sec. At the first km I looked at my watch to find out that it was just clicking to 9minutes but that group of people were running in pouring rain up and down these pretty good hills and a ski village with slick cobble stones and wet bridges. It went by very quickly. I have not run a 10km since the Avon race which was very flat. I'm now five years older. I do not usually run hills my last two races were hills (remember Cincinnati)
This was humbling and fun. At the end they announce you're name and the clock was accurate. I came in 40th out of 145. 1:01.32. I pushed only in the last three km since I was pretty happy about not sliding across some of the mud puddles (only two of them) It was a double loop and it felt like the second time around I had never run a hill before. Loved it anyway's. Great food and drinks after. Sponsored by a local drink maker. Free coolers and beer for three hours. I had a great time. By the way I was registered as Dhanani. www.josroadrace.ca

Caruso Club Festival 5km Run/Walk and 2.5km Walk

The hot (32deg C) weather on this sunny Sunday afternoon did not deter us hardy walkers and runners as 49 participants toed the line for the Italian Festival's 33rd 5km run and 2 1/2 km walk. The 1km course (5laps for the 5km) beginning and ending at the Caruso Club allows easy spectator viewing at the Club and affords a fast up and down course for the runners. There were even 2 water stations and a couple of hoses on the loop and they were very well used and appreciated. And everybody got a free pasta and chicken supper compliments of the Caruso Club just for showing up. Bill Thompson and Ray Vincent organize the race every year and they do a commendable job with the help of numerous volunteers. They are always looking for ways to improve the event and next year a 9:00 am start is planned.

There was some good speed this year as Robert Lopatka tripped the timer in 16:47 on the Mens' side and Amanda Kosmerly was the overall Ladies' winner in 20:34. Click here for all 5k Run results.

Check out their results here

Run Club Update - by Donna Smrek & Lise Edwards

July 12, 2005 The Running Room Club Update:
Sudbury Store (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our 1/2 Marathon Group that is graduating this weekend and running the Massey 1/2 Marathon on Sunday. Look for the Running Room tent at the 18k aide station and don't be too surprised if you get some relief from my water gun to help keep you cool.

Speaking of keeping cool during this little heat wave we are having, please be sure to hydrate properly and try to get your run in early on in the day before it gets too smoggy out there. Don't forget your sunscreen and hat and some change in your pocket or a cell phone in case you are out and don't feel so great you can call for a ride. Being active is great although it can be a challenge with the type of heat we've been experiencing.

One more week before we celebrate the 21st Anniversary of the Running Room with the 20 Minute Challenge which will be held Wednesday July 20th, 2005 @ 6:00 p.m. at the Sudbury Store. Registration is free and you get a great commemorative cap for participating. Be sure to register on-line or give us a call at the store and we can register you for the event.

All of the Running Room Staff and Management & Friends would like to wish Donna Smrek (Sudbury Manager) a very Happy 40th Birthday.

We would like to thank Debbie Tremblay for the great big hunk of fudge she brought in and we got to enjoy last Wednesday at our practice session. Candice also brought in some baking as well so if you haven't had a chance to drop in at our sessions, we always have great treats of fresh fruit and cold water available and every once in a while a sweet treat awaits you when you get back.

Results - 2005 National Junior Track and Field Championships
Montreal, PQ - July 8-10th

Track North sent its largest contingent of athletes in several years to the National Junior Track and Field Championships in Montreal this past weekend and came away with five top-8 performances.

Dave Thibert, 18, overcame a thigh injury to place 5th overall in the men's high jump, finishing the competition with a best jump of 1.90m ,just short of his personal best.

Andrew Athanasopolous, 18, who hails from Elliot Lake, placed 5th in a very tight men's javelin competition, with a best throw of 57.34m.

Dan Gardiner, 17, jumped his way to an 8th place finish in the men's triple jump with a best performance of 13.34m.

Tanya Simard, 17, who hails from North Bay, placed 7th in the women's triple jump with a best performance of 10.97m. Tanya had a huge final jump (11.60+) but faulted by a few mere centimetres!

Eric Ouellette, 17, supplied the biggest suprise of the weekend with a huge personal best in the men's 800 metre semi-final, completing the distance in 1:55.44. Eric didn't have much left in the tank for the final where he finished 8th overall.

Candie Sabel, 18, finished 22nd overall in the 400 metre hurdle race with a final time of 1:08.01 seconds - a mere 2 tenths off her personal best.

Quotes of the Meet:

1. If I ran any faster, I would have died!! Eric Ouellette (This after his huge PB and roughly 30 minutes it took him to regain full consciousness!)

2. Conversation between Eric, Jim Taylor and Kaitlyn Tallman (official Track North photographer):

Kaitlyn: Is North Bay where the Dionne Quintuplets were from?
Jim: Yes!
Eric: How many are in a Dionne?

3. Assorted Parry Sound/Chelmsford banter: @$##%#%#%! (sorry this is a family list!!)
