Firecracker Roadrace
the Biggest Ever

The Inco Walden Firecracker
5km Roadrace continues to evolve and grow as 184 runners/walkers
entered the 5km event this year and 53 young folk tackled the1
km course. For the first time walkers and runners events were
combined to facilitate the organizing but also to give walkers
the experience of participating with a larger crowd. I believe
it was a good change.
We do not score kids in
the 1km event and all receive medals and a treat as they cross
the finish line. There is a draw for a bike and Riley Thaxter
was the winner.
The Firecracker 5km roadrace
was hard fought on the men's side with Robert Lopatka (Sudbury
Rocks!!( and Darren Jermyn (Track North) trading paint through
most of the race. Robert pulled ahead in the last third and
crossed the line in a blazing 16:11 just 7 seconds ahead of
a hard charging Jermyn (16:18). Erik Uuksukainen came third
in 17:05.
The ladies' competition
was not quite as close for first as nobody challenged Kerry
Salmoni in her 20:37 charge. Second and third were a whole lot
closer as Amanda Kosmerly (21:04) edged out Laura West (21:10).
Our male Masters winner
was Pierre Dumont (18:50) and our female Master was Karen Beaulieu
(Sudbury Rocks!!) in 21:19.
Congratulations to all runners
and walkers. We look forward to seeing you next year.
Thank you to the Organizers
- Ron Poirier especially, the Sponsors and all you volunteers.
You've made this the best event yet.

Jason Wicke Places 3rd
in National Tri Championships
Submitted by Mike Coughlin
Exciting news from Halifax - local
triathlete Jason Wicke placed 3rd in the National Sprint Triathlon
Championships.
The following is an exerpt from the Triathlon Canada Website:
---
The 2005 Canadian Sprint Triathlon Championships were held Sunday,
July 3rd, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This year's race had a record
number of participants, and can now be considered the largest
triathlon event in Atlantic Canada. The Investors Group Triathlon
was the host for this year's event, and was under the direction
of Sylvain Morin, the Race Director.
This is a new Championship event for 2005. The success of this
race has guaranteed that this will be a staple Championship
event in the triathlon community. In a Sprint distance triathlon,
athletes participate in a 750m swim, a 20km bike and then finish
with a 5km run. The course involved a lake swim, a bike course
with some long and gradual slopes, and a relatively flat run
course.
Two competitors managed to break the one hour mark. Kyle Jones
(Heritage Way) placed first among the Elite Men in 59:38, followed
shortly by the other sub-hour finisher, Colin Edwards (Antigonish)
in 59:54. Third place went
to Jason Wicke (Sudbury) in 1:00:12.
Among the Elite Women, Victoria's Suzanne Weckand managed to
make it to the top of the podium in 1:06:47, followed shortly
by fellow Victorian, Kerry Spearing, in 1:07:58. Julie Curwin
(Sydney) followed closely to finish in third place with a time
of 1:08:18.
For additional information on the event, please visit the official
website at: www.halifaxsprinttriathlon.ca.
