Muskoka Tri Weekend

June 18 and 19
This was the second year
the Pros had a CHASE RACE in the Long Course Triathlon. The
Ladies got close to 20 minute head start on the Men and the
race was on. In 2004 the Men prevailed but this year one fast
femme held off the hard charging dudes. Samantha McGlone broke
the tape at 10:33:58 followed about 2 and 3/4 minutes later
by Olympic gold medallist, Simon Whitfield. Great event! Good
for the fans as it was very competitive and we got to see a
world class field and good for the participants as the
payday was lucrative. I hope the Organizers keep it up.

their Detailed Results Here
Local athlete, Jason Wicke,
went in the Sprint Tri at the last minute on the recommendation
of his coach. The intent was to make it a fast training outing.
The outcome - HE WON! (Results
here)
Special notes:
Mike Couglin had probably the best outing of his tri career
as his times now approach the Pro level. Kerry Abols did awesome
as usual and appears headed for Ironman Canada again. Steve
Tremblay gutted out an excellent performance qualifying him
for Lake Placid this year. Sudbury had 2 Pros in the Long Course.
Kyle (Wolfgang) Guembel not only placed 8th overall but he also
printed a marriage proposal on the back of his singlet to fellow
Pro participant, Nicole Van Beurden. (She said Yes.) Mike Hay
was our second local Pro and he came 10th overall.
Mere mortals had excellent
races also as a number of locals (first timers and regulars)
entered events from the kids 1k, Sprint Tri, Long Course Tri
and Long Course Du plus a Long Course Relay.
And some people loved the
events enough to do two. Yes, Laura Thaxter, Drew Anderson and
Becky Olacke were so enthralled with their Sprint Tri experience
on Saturday afternoon they immediately signed up for the Long
Course Relay on Sunday morning. And Team "Go Banana"
slip slided their way to 15th place and a 3:48:47 finish.
Persevere and good things will come your way.
Maureen Moustgaard knocked about 10 minutes off her last time
out and netted a 3rd place age group plaque.
Congratulations to everybody and a special note
of praise to all you Rocks!!.

Hi, Vince! Just wanted to
send a great big thank you to everyone for all the support we
had in Muskoka this past weekend. It really means alot and motivates
you when you hear your name being shouted and see so many familiar
faces. I had a great weekend. Maureen, Becky, myself and Sheila
drove down to Huntsville Friday nite. Maureen (2nd tri) and
Becky (2nd tri) were competing in the short course on Saturday.Sheila
and I were the pit /support crew for Becky and Maureen on Saturday
and they returned the favour on Sunday as Sheila and I competed
in the long course.
I had a pretty good day. The swim was going well, water was
fairly warm but pretty wet (ha,ha) as usual. At about 1k into
the swim my calfs and quads started cramping. Not a pleasant
feeling. So I mentally tried to relax the spasms, sometimes
works but not this time. Luckily I have great upper body strength
(thanks to Dale Comeau, if you ever need to be whipped into
shaped this is the lady that will do it!) Out of the water,
up the hill (thanks Vince for getting me to move a little faster,
I was kind of zoned out!) Pretty good transition time, out on
my machine!!!my baby!!my bike!! I love it!! Was having a super
bike ride when all of a sudden my chain came off. Usually this
would not be a problem for me, easy thing to fix, however, I
guess I was a little flustered because I could not get that
chain back on!! I must have been on the side of the road for
a good 5 minutes before another competitor stopped and offered
some assistance. Good thing he did as the problem wasn't with
the chain at the front but the derailer at the back was jammed
up. I'll have to go back to bike repair 101 I guess. Anyhow,
the rest of the bike was a blast, I love those hills!! On to
the run which went very well. I wish I was a little faster but
I didn't stop to hit the bushes (my closet friends can attest
that this is a big accomplishment for me). Finished feeling
strong and happy ('cause I knew I was going to get a great big,
honkin' icecream cone, Thanks Lise!!!).
I also wanted to congratulate Donna, Laura, Drew, Leslie,Steve,
Bob. Mike, Maureen, Sheila,Kerry, Jason, Paul on doing a great
job with their events!!
p.s. I will let Sheila tell the shower story....very scary!!
Laura Thaxter writes:
Alright, so now I am hooked.
I did my first triathlon on saturday and
absolutely loved it. In fact I loved it so much, myself and
two other
(apparently crazy) people decided to make a relay team and sign
up for the
long tri on sunday.
Saturday was great because the triathlon started at 4:00pm,
the day went by
slowly because I was so nervous, but once I hit the water (which
was so cold
I'm pretty sure I saw some icebergs float by), my nervousness
completely left
me and I felt totally in my element. Then minutes after I crossed
the
finish line, did Drew, Becky and myself decided to do the long-tri.
Now here is the funny part, for those of you who do not know
Becky, she is
Sheila's swim coach. She is an amazing swimmer and yet I was
the one who
did the 2km swim at 8:30am (in an already wet wetsuit from the
night
before). Becky did the 55km bike ride and Drew did the 15km
run. We came
in 15th out of 21 relay teams. My thought is if we stuck to
what we do best
(Becky swims, Drew bikes, and I run) we would have kicked butt.
However
considering we did the sprint tri just the night before, this
one was just
for fun.
Now I am off to Guelph this weekend to do another triathlon
(just the sprint
this time) and Peter borough in two weeks. I'm hoping with the
cross
training and short running distances,
I will be able to stay off the injured
list (I'm keeping my fingers crossed).
So anyway, that is my triathlon experience and how I got hooked.
GO BANANA!

Sudbury Fitness Challenge's
Canoe Marathon this
Weekend

by Rob Marcolini
Its that time of the year when the air and the
water starts to warm up and members of the ROCKS!!! start thinking
about doing other activities that take the strain off their
tired, aching legs. And nothing sooths your sore, burning joints
like cool mud between the tootsies, like the kind of mud that
can be found between Bethel Lake and Ramsay Lake. And you may
ask yourself how can I get to this "magical" place.
Its quite simple really. Just get a partner and a canoe and
participate in this Sundays Sudbury Fitness Challenge\Sudbury
Canoe Club Canoe Race, the fourth installment in the Fitness
Challenge Series. Register race day down at the Club on Elizabeth
Street, between 7:30 and 8:30 am. There is a mass start at 9am
with 4, 9, and 18.5 km events. Team categories are men's, women's
and mixed (there's no solo event). Boats can't exceed 17' in
length and all safety regulations apply (there must be PFD's
for both paddlers, a bail can, and throw rope). Canoe club medals
will be given to the first three event finishers in each team
category. There will also be draw prizes, a BBQ, and refreshments
after the race. For more information call Rob at 522-4195(w),
523-0500(h), or by e-mail marco.renout@sympatico.ca.
We look forward to seeing you there.

*Don't forget to duct tape those expensive running shoes that
you bought at the Running Room to your feet for all those tackling
the portages in the 9 and 18.5 km events. Better yet, don't
wear then at all!

The Running Room Club Update:
Sudbury Store (Cedar Pointe Plaza)
Congratulations to everyone that made the
trip to Muskoka for the Triathlon/Duathlon this past weekend.
We had about 20 Sudbury athletes making the trip and a great
crew to cheer them on and the reports received at the Running

goals.
The Running Room is challenging everyone to
participate in 20 minutes of activity, walk, run, chat,
laugh your twenty minutes away on July 20, 2005 starting
at 6:00 pm and receive a Free Commemorative Hat for your
efforts. Sign up on-line, FREE, and make Sudbury's participant
list the longest. We are competing with all the other Running
Room locations across Canada so lets get everyone involved,
friends, family, neighbor's, and show Canada that we don't
belong on the ' unhealthy city' list.
We'd like to invite all out to our Practice Sessions - our

if you are needing a change or new challenge when it comes
to your walking routine let us help you out!!
Traffic in the south end seems to be getting

Have a great week and we'll see you on the
run,

YTri News - Muskoka
Weekend Edition
Well another Muskoka weekend has come and
gone, marking the "real" opening of the Ontario
triathlon season. This was my third Muskoka weekend in
a row, and it is just fabulous to see how well represented
the North is at this fabulous event. I have now officially
lost count of the number of folks from the Sudbury area
alone that participate in the Sprint and Long Course triathlons
and duathlons. And many more show up to lend moral support.
There is something pretty cool about arriving at an event
where the 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist (Simon Whitfield)
and a 2x Hawaii Ironman World Champion (Luc Van Lierde)
are racing, and running into literally dozens of your
training partners, co-workers and friends. Following in
the tradition of last year, you can read my top 10 list
of memories from the weekend below. You can also read
Paul Graham's report about his first attack on the Long
Course along with his report from Milton 2 weeks ago.
In this Issue....

Milton and Muskoka Race Reports - by Paul Graham
Top 10 Memories
of Muskoka 2005
10. Watching friend Jason Wicke win the
sprint
9. Hearing the wind whip around my borrowed super-duper
go-fast aero helmet (which my girlfriend calls the ugliest
thing she has ever seen!)
8. Kyle Guembel and Nicole van Buerden getting engaged
(Kyle put the proposal on the back of his racing singlet!)
7. Cheering for Steve Tremblay as he qualified for IM
Lake Placid (see you there, buddy!)
6. Witnessing Samantha McGlone squashing the field in
the Muskoka chase (wow!)
5. Clocking Simon Whitfield running at an incomprehensible
3:12/km off the bike to win the men's title
4. Watching my friend and athlete Dave Welsh finish strong
(awesome job buddy!)
3. Hearing my name being called by fellow athletes and
supporters throughout the day
2. Cheering on the many friends I saw on the course
1. Feeling the pure bliss of swimming, biking and running
on a beautiful spring morning in cottage country
see you all (and hopefully more) in Muskoka
next year!

Milton and Muskoka Race
Reports - by Paul Graham
Hi Mike,
Guess its time that I write a bit of a race report.
Milton, first race
of the season, and the big test of my training. Over the
winter I was swimming with the Laurentian Masters swim
club, and following a
Battista's rigorous cycling program. I was expecting big
things, and to make
things interesting I decided that I wanted to beat Bill
Leonard. He hadn't
been training much, so I figured I might have a chance.
The swim start went
fairly well, appart from the three elbows I got in the
face.
In the transition area I was pleasently surprised by the
number of bikes still
around. A good sign. On the bike course I was feeling
good, except for the
people passing me. Luckly it was mostly the fast guys
in the wave behind me,
but there were a couple guys from my age group that got
past. Back in for T2,
and off to the run. You've gotta love that 1st hill first
thing into the run
in Milton. The rest of the run was pretty good, if not
terribly hot.
Everything felt much better than last year, and my finishing
time was 11
minutes faster. Good enough for 13th in my age grou, but
unfortunatly Bill was
still a minute and a half ahead. Overall it was a great
encouragement, and I
know there's still tons of room for improvement.
2 weeks later, Muskoka
long course. I was a little more nervous about this one,
as it was the longest distance I've done to date. I'm
planning on doing the
Peterborough 1/2 if everything went well in Muskoka...
and unfortunately
everthing did go well. I found a pair of feet on the swim
to draft behind, and
got out of the water in record time (for me) still feeling
completely fresh.
After a small problem with my bike shoes I was off on
the bike. It wasn't long
before Mike and his helmet passed me. After the 1st turn
around I started
playing leap frog with a girl in my age group. We passed
each other about a
dozen times before she suggested that she'd take one hill
and I'd get the next.
It worked for me, and with 5k to go I was finally able
to pull ahead for good.
Or so I thought... With about 4k to go I felt a distinct
wobble in my front
wheel. Worried that I might have a flat I looked down
only to see it
catastrophically fail. Not good, but luckly it wasn't
a huge hill that I was
going down, and I did have a spare tube and pump with
me. Changing it as
quickly as I could I found a 3" long hole where the
tube had blown up. Perhaps
the discouraging sound is the whoosh of tons of cyclists
passing you while
you're desperately trying to change your tire. The final
4k weren't as great
as the previous 51, but I knew it would be over shortly.
I was unsure how the
run was going to feel, mostly because my legs didn't feel
the greatest when I was warming up. I decided that I'd
take it easy on the way
out of town just to make sure everthing was working the
way it should. Going
out to the turn around I was able to keep a decent pace,
probably getting
passed by a couple more people than passed me. Once I
was on the way back it
was a different story. Everything was feeling great, and
I was able to turn it
up a notch for the run back into town. I crossed the finish
line with a time
of 3:30:41 I was really happy with the day. I could have
done without the
flat, but I guess we all get one of those now an then.
Congrats to everybody
else from Sudbury. There were some impressive results,
and a great showing all
around.
As for me, it looks
like I'm heading to Peterborough for July 10th. But before
then I hope to do the Northbay tri, and the firecracker
5k. Hopefully I'll see
you all there.
