Mountain Bike Tour Numbers Up

Race Director (and Sudbury Rock!!) John Leonard is very pleased with the success of this year's Sudbury Fitness Challenge "Mountain Bike Tour". He should be as the total participation increased by 39 from last year to 112 cyclists this time out. The most exciting thing is 43 of those participants were kids under 12. We can thank the drive of both parents and kids for that to happen. Maybe the new generation is fitter than we think.

Benny Doucette was the overall winner in the 30-km event. The results for the rest are now posted at the Fitness Challenge Website.

Next up in the Fitness Challenge series:  "The Canoe Marathon" on June 26 at the Sudbury Canoe Club

Karen Beaulieu Runs Another Trail Run In Tennessee

by Karen Beaulieu

June 2, 2005 "Yeehaw I'm coming home!".....Well not quite yet. Ms B. couldn't resist the lure of one last trail run and so her departure was delayed.

June 7, 2005 In case you are wondering , yes I'm still in Tennessee. A minor glitch but I will be on the road tomorrow morning. Tuesday is a speed day so I will have to make that up on the highway. Hopefully I will find that darn exit to Canada and not drive 20 miles past it again. Wish me luck.
I went for a trail run Sunday morning (I.C. King of Trails Race) which was beautiful but ran too many hills and too long. The reason I say this is because I had also made up my mind to run one last trail race before coming home. I thought the race was only 4miles and not too difficult...wrong! The race began at 6pm and it was still about 90. I was then told it was a 7miler with the first 3 1/2 miles having many difficult hills. I began to regret that morning run as my legs were still sore. I positioned myself at the back (can you believe it) as I thought I would do terrible. I also took a wrong turn ,as did a few others, and ended up running about another mile .
Considering what I did in the morning I came in pretty good and was happy to have finished still standing. I can't tell you what I placed or what my time was as I forgot to ask. Vince if you have time maybe you can look that up for me. ( 19 Karen Beaulieu 43 F Knoxville 1:03:12) Great little race in the I.C. King Park. I will go back in the fall. On a positive note I did not fall once and have not tangled with anymore poison ivy. See you guys Thursday. Karen

Be Positive and Deaf...and you will fulfill your dreams

by Tim Uuksulainen

There once was a bunch of tiny frogs, who arranged a running competition.
The goal was to reach the top of a very high tower. A big crowd had
gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer on the contestants. The race
began... Honestly ... No one in the crowd really believed that the tiny
frogs would reach the top of the tower.

You heard statements such as: "Oh, WAY too difficult!!!" They will NEVER
make it to the top!!!" or: "Not a chance that they will succeed. The tower
is too high!!!" The tiny frogs began collapsing. One by one . . . Except
for those, who in a fresh tempo, were climbing higher and higher... The crowd
continued to yell, "It is too difficult!!! No one will make it!!!" More
tiny frogs got tired and gave up . . .

But ONE continued higher and higher and higher. . . This one wouldn't give
up!!! At the end everyone else had given up climbing the tower. Except for
the one tiny frog who, after a big effort, was the only one who reached
the top! THEN, all of the other tiny frogs naturally wanted to know how this
one frog managed to do it? A contestant asked the tiny frog how he had found
the strength to succeed and reach the goal? It turned out . . .That the winner
was DEAF!!!

The wisdom of this story is: NEVER listen to other people's tendencies to
be negative or pessimistic . . . Because they take your most wonderful dreams
and wishes away from you . . .the ones you have in your heart!!! Always
think of the power words have. Because everything you hear and read will
affect your actions!!! Therefore: ALWAYS be . . . POSITIVE!!! And above
all: Be DEAF when people tell YOU that you cannot fulfill your dreams!!!

Run Club Update - by Donna Smrek & Lise Edwards

June 7, 2005 The Running Room Club Update:
Sudbury Store (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

Good Afternoon,

The weather has been hot and humid and we just want to remind our walkers and runners to be sure to carry water or coins when they are out there to prevent dehydration. Wetter is Better! Water, like carbohydrate, is a critical nutrient for long distance walkers/runners to focus on. Unfortunately, water intake is often overlooked, a practice which can have disastrous results.
Water is essential for:

regulating body temperature
transporting glucose and other nutrients to cells
removing waste products

All of these processes suffer when water intake is inadequate and dehydration can result. Dehydration or lack of body water is a very real concern for that all walkers/runners need to be aware of. Left unchecked, dehydration curbs endurance and overall physical performance. In extreme cases, dehydration can be deadly.

Upcoming events:

Firecracker 5km Road Race July 1, 2005 @ 7:00 p.m. walkers and runners this is a great event with loads of fun and prizes. Kids Run (12 & under) 1k fun run 6:00 p.m.
