Rocks!! Run in Mississauga Race Weekend

This past weekend a few Northerners made the trip to Mississuaga for its second annual race weekend. The events comprised a 10k roadrace on Saturday evening and on Sunday morning the 1/2 and full marathon went off at 8:00 am followed by a 2k kids run later in the morning.

Rocks!! member Lawrie Oliphant competed in the 10k event. His personal best run of 48:27 was made all the sweeter as he and all 10kers ran in a steady cold rain. It was hard on us spectators and I'm sure all runners were pleased to be finished.

Rocks!! members Lise Perdue and Maureen Wilson took on the 1/2 marathon on Sunday morning. Sunny skies and warm temperatures accompanied them through the kilometres. Both finished very well (Maureen - 1:49:14 and Lise 2:15:04). Rocks!! friend David Hemphill, ran his first 1/2 and turned a very competitive1:36:13. Next up for him will be the marathon.

Lise Edwards and Vince Perdue took on the marathon. The plan was to qualify Lise for Boston. Unfortunately fate did not smile on her on this day as she came up 3 minutes short of her 1:45:59 requirement. The good news is this was her fastest marathon ever (3:49) and she will qualify in the Waterfront Marathon in Toronto in September. Vince did re qualify for Boston in 3:42 and plans to pace Lise ALL THE WAY in Toronto.

We did meet Dr. Kirsty Duncan (The Dream Trail Run) in the starting chutes. It was nice to see her again. She ran a strong 3:43.

Lise Edwards adds her thoughts:

Well Vince, I thought it was only right that I send you a quick email for the site and talk about the marathon. I want to thank you for taking time to help me with my training and making the journey to Mississauga. I'm not sure anything could prepare me for how bad I felt on Sunday after the first few kilometres, I thought it would pass so I didn't say anything to you. My stomach was not doing very well and by 20k my legs didn't want to go anymore. The next 22k was spent praying and trying to get through the run. I didn't want to talk to anyone, I just wanted out. Ryan, the pace bunny for 3:45 came up and said come on Lise you can stay with me and he helped me get through the next few kilometres. I quickly lost him... seems I wasn't very good at keeping track of my running partners :) I kept on going with my new goal of just completing the marathon and gave up on my qualifying time. When Lawrie jumped in to help me get to the finish line he asked what pace I'd like to run... I said just get me to the end. I did get my personal best although I have to admit I was feeling my personal worst. I know that I have many marathons left in these legs and I will continue to train for the "Boston Qualifier". So here's to character building runs.

Thanks again for all your support you really are a remarkable person individual.

Victoria's Duathlon in Waterloo Attracts 3 Hardy Locals

May 15, 2005

by Mike Coughlin

A few of us Northern folks hit Victoria's Duathlon in Waterloo over the
weekend to kick off the multisport season, including YTri'ers Dave Herst,
Steve Fessenden and myself. Here is my report.

With 1 week to go before my first A race of the season at the Disney Half
Ironman, I decided to shake out the legs and test my bike setup and
transition skills at Victoria's Duathlon in Waterloo. While most folks
know this event as the Brick Duathlon, it carries a new name in memory of
Victoria D'Agostino and a slightly altered course of 4km/25km/4km. What
never changes, however, is the weather, which dawned cold and dreary,
though not as wet as previous years.

As this was my first duathlon and coldest multisport event, I noticed a
couple of things. First, transitions are a breeze in a duathlon! Shoes,
off, shoes on, helmet on, go. Well, not quite - the second thing I
noticed was cold weather requires added warmth so I added full cycling gloves to
the equation. I also listened to Chantal Demers who advised me to keep my
warm up tights on in addition to my 2 jerseys and armwarmers (but no jacket
or vest). Judging the weather is tricky business in a spring duathlon,
and I was lucky to get it right.

Physically, I was looking forward to positive feedback from my body after
a winter of solid training including many hours on the stationary trainer
and a week in the hills near Santa Cruz. This first race of the spring
provided a chance to see if all that stuff worked. Well, after a smartly paced
first run where I let the speedsters do their thing, I got on the bike and found
my happy place. Sure it was windy and hilly, but I was loving it and
enjoying the fact that I was in the second wave with more than 100 people
ahead of me. The strategy was simple: Ride hard, pass cyclist, repeat.
It was a shame that the ride had to end after 40 minutes.

"Blazing" through T2 (note to self: helmet impossible to remove with thick
gloves on!), I looked forward to the second run with the goal of an even
split. Running hard, I once again had the luxury of passing folks fading
from the first wave without having anybody pass me. I ran to within a
single second of my first run time, confirming that I nailed my pacing and
earning me 12th overall and 2nd M30-34

At 71 minutes, this race definitely qualified as a sprint and was a great
taper session for next Sunday. If only it had been about 25 degrees
warmer! Oh well, time to hit the sauna and get ready to run with Mickey Mouse...

Follow your dreams!

Mike

Cooler temperatures for the 5 a.m. start soon climb closer to 30°C (mid

exception of Diamond Head. The highest point on the course is 38 meters

HAVE TIME OR TALENT?
If you're not ready to join Team Diabetes, you can still support the
Canadian Diabetes Association by…

* Holding a fundraiser at your workplace or in your community for us. We’ll
help you with ideas and provide support such as pledge forms and posters.
The money raised will stay in your community for diabetes research,
education, service and advocacy.

* Sponsor a child for camp. Every summer the Canadian Diabetes Association
operates a camp in the area for 75 to 80 children with Type 1 diabetes.
The cost to send one child to this specialized two-week camp is $1,400.
Your gift will help a child in need.

* Support the cause through your workplace-giving program. As little as
$10 per pay will help us further our work. Another idea is to help us make
our events better by donating a prize or gift certificate from your
workplace/business. Or, make a corporate gift to the Canadian Diabetes
Association.
Every financial donation receives a tax receipt.
