Fast Pace at the 3rd Annual

Fitfriends 5K

Excellent weather and a fast course greeted runners and walkers alike as they toed the line together starting the third annual Fitfriends 5Km Road Race in support of Genevra House. And the runners gave it their all.

Lisa Labrecque (Track North) literally flew through the course and finished way ahead of the pack in a P.B. 16:54. Todd Withers was the first Male and second overall in 17:44. Steve Matusch (Sudbury Rocks!!) placed second male 17:48 and Frank Lesk (Sudbury Rocks!!) came third male in 17:59. Alicia Kaye (Running Room) was second female in a very fast 18:54 and Amanda Kosmerly followed in third place with a time of 20:19. Connor Anderson (Sudbury Rocks!!) left nothing on the track when he came accross the line as first youth in 22:52 (actually he did transfer his breakfast from stomach to track - after he crossed the finish line). Mark Bamberger was second youth in 22:53 and Kayla Gallo came in third in 27:48. Stephanie Koett (Sudbury Rocks!!) has been a bit under the weather lately and was ordered NOT to run. She walked instead and blazed her way to first overall in 38:01 - ahead of a few runners. Kirsikka Corradi was second female walker in 42:23 and Maria Dagostino came in third in 43:30. The men were also out there in force walking and Gaetan Lachance took top honours in 39:56. Tate Conlon (49:27) and Nigel Conlon (50:16) took second and third spots.

Thanks to Donna Smrek and Lise Edwards for putting on an excellent event and also a big thank you to All who helped out in volunteer and sponsor roles. We look forward to seeing you again next year.

A Note from the Fitfriends Organizing Team

What a great success this year's event was and we (Lise & Donna) would like to extend our thanks to our sponsors, volunteers and participants for making "Strive to Come Alive in 2005" such a great event.

First we would have to thank Leslie Scime for the great event logo and design. Leslie received an email from me with a request for a logo and she pulled through for us with designs for posters, registration forms and t-shirt. FiTFRiENDS was greatful to have her as part of our team.

Donna and I enjoyed the smiles on the faces of the runners and walkers as they crossed the finish line... even if some of them weren't feeling the best after pushing themselves. Our registration and participation numbers were down from last year but we are happy to announce that we will be making a donation to the YWCA's Genevra House in the amount of $2,500.

A special thanks to you Vince for taking care of the timing, the course and organizing the marshals and keeping everything in order, we are not sure what Sudbury and the running community would do without you.

We had great group of volunteers that helped make this our smoothest event with registration & race kit pick up made fast and easy, set up and tear down was also very organized and we actually looked like we knew what we were doing :)

FiTFRiENDS will be moving our event to June in 2006 in order to prevent any conflicts with the growing Sun Run so stay tuned for our 2006 logo and event date.

Thanks again,
Lise Edwards & Donna Smrek

Amanda Luoma (Diabetes Canada) writes:

I wanted to take a moment to congratulate everyone who took part in the
FitFriends 5 km Run/Walk yesterday morning.

It was a beautiful sunny, warm morning with a perfect breeze (Lise and
Donna really have connections!) and 170 eager participants ready to
challenge themselves!

Team Diabetes Canada Members Marianne Mantyla (31:36), Jane Cox (32:52) and
Janet Guembel (36:08) all had a great run and finished strong! Way to go
ladies - that's the way to prepare for the Amsterdam Half Marathon!

Team Diabetes Alum Steve Matusch (17:48) finished in second place for the
men - great job Steve!

Congrats to Maureen Moustgaard who had a great run too - coming in at
35:05!

And a special mention regarding Kirsikka Corradi (CDA staff extrodinaire),
who finished 2nd in the walk in her FIRST EVER event!! Well done Kirsikka!
Enjoy the bling-bling!

Stephanie Koett writes:

Walking was the flavor of the day for me at last Sunday’s Fit Friends Run / Walk. Although I have been sharpening my skills for the past couple of weeks, I have a new respect for the after effects that fast paced walking has on the body. I had always found that for a few days after Running a race, varying degrees of stiffness settled in the legs. After Walking briskly, my hip flexors more then reminded me that they are not used to….nor do they appreciate 38 minutes of hip-swaying.

Thanks everyone for a Great Event!!!!

Stephanie Koett

Run Club Update - by Donna Smrek & Lise Edwards

The Running Room Club Update: May 11, 2005
Sudbury (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

Happy First Birthday Running Room

"Strive to Come Alive in 2005" was a great success thanks to the efforts and participation of our friends from the Running Room and Sudbury Rocks Run Club. We would like to extend our thanks to Vince Perdue for taking care of the course and timing, Bob Bagley for loading and transporting all of our gear to and from the event, our great volunteers for helping with the marshalling and the water station and our sponsors who continue to support our efforts in encouraging healthy lifestyles through fitness and you, the participants, who make it all worth while.

Donna and I are happy to say that even with the attendance being slightly lower than last year we are still able to match our donation from last year of $2,500 to the YWCA's Genevra House.

Darlene Plamer of the YMCA was in this weekend to accept a cheque in the amount of $500.00 a donation made from funds raised from our Resolution Run that took place on January 1, 2005.

Penn Relays, Philadelphia

Andrew Ellerton ran three relays at the prestigious meet, and won three gold medals.

Andrew's U. of Michigan crew won the distance medley, 4 x 1 mile and 4 x 800m relays, and put to rest the controversy about their distance medley win over home-town Arkansas at the Indoor NCAA Championships (Arkansas was first over the line, but was DQ'd for interference. With 3 wins over Arkansas at Penn, the Arkansas trash talkers have been silenced.

Andrew ran an excellent 1:47.9/800m, 4:06 mile and a 1:52/800m split. The Distance medley time, by the way, broke a Michigan school record by 5 seconds.

Bill's Ranking from Last Year
It turns out that Bill Thompson's 38:33/10k time from last year was the 3rd fastest in Canada for the 60-69 age group (and pretty darned fast for any age group).
