Cambrian Spring Tune Up Results

The Cambrian College Spring Tune Up 5Km. Roadrace has finally been resurrected after too many absent years. And the run was a good one with 3 speedsters hitting the 16 minute range and a few participants running PBs - all in a significant wind.

Jason Wicke took top honours in 16:25 with Mike Hay (16:48) and Brent Poulsen (16:50) hot on his heals. Alicia Kaye was first female overall running a PB of 19:02. Race Organizer, Amanda Kosmerly, came second (20:54) and Amanda Seed came third (22:26).

Lots of Rocks!! as well as my Running Room 1/2 marathon clinic members took part and you guys and gals did awesome!

Thank you to Amanda Kosmerly and Bob Piche for putting on the run. And we surely appreciated the assistance provided by all the volunteers from Cambrian College, Sudbury Masters, Sudbury Rocks!! and others.

A Runner's Perspective on the Event

by Sheila Yaw MacLean

What does a runner with a swimming problem do when in Saulte Ste. Marie for a weekend with her trusty friend Maureen Moustgaard? Naturally we compete in the 2005 Ontario Masters Swimming Championship.

You're probably thinking Sheila hates swimming so why in the world would she register for that???? I asked myself that question numerous times over the weekend. Actually it was a fun packed weekend waiting by the pool cheering teammates on for 2 long days in a row nervously wondering if you're going to make a fool of yourself off the starting blocks, or if you can manage to do the flip turns you trained for (also known as FFT) or if you're going to embarrass the whole Sudbury Masters swim team by DQing yourself because you didn't touch
the end of the pool as you turned. What stress.

The whole concept of a swim meet is very much different than what Maureen and I were used to. In a running race you arrive maybe 1/2 hour before the race starts, run till you puke and it's all over. Then you get to eat and or drink all you want. In a swim meet you arrive at least 1 hour before the competitions begin, you warm up in the water swimming many 100s more meters than your race actually is and you wait until your heat is called. Another interesting concept is that swimmers compete in more than 1 event in a weekend. For example on Saturday I did a 100 meter race, a 400 meter and 2 relays and that was considered the bare minimal. Most people competed in many more. Maybe in Ottawa our runners should consider running the 1/2 marathon on Saturday night and the marathon on Sunday and maybe throw in the 5km for good measure.

We attended a banquet for the swimmers on Saturday night. Another learning experience. I was looking forward to a nice pasta dinner so I could carbo load for the next day, my big event. We did have a little pasta in the first course but it was the main course that surprised me. The night before a running race you would never eat anything other than what you knew your body could handle (usually) but swimmers are different. They served us buffalo meat which I thought at the time was prime rib roast and didn't find out until the next day what it was. It was actually pretty good.

As I said the next day was the big event for both Maureen and I. She competed in a 50 meter freestyle, 50 meter back and a relay and I competed in only the 800 meter freestyle. I didn't want to overdue it considering what I swam the day before. I was, as usual, very nervous wondering what the heck I was doing here. As it turned out I came first in my age group and brought home a gold medal. Maureen came 3rd in her age group in both 50 meter swims and brought home the bronze. We actually brought home the hardware, we can officially call ourselves swimmers. By now you're probably thinking wow Sheila was amazing, she doesn't even like swimming and she got gold. It's not hard to get gold when you're the only one in your age group. I could have dog paddled the whole thing and still received the gold. The only pressure as pointed out by fellow swimmer George Gavrel was not to DQ so I wouldn't lose against myself. I could actually picture that happening so I didn't attempt one FFT.

All in all it was a very good weekend. The people on the Sudbury Masters Swim team are great. Coach Becky is the best. We could not have done it without her. I think I'm actually looking forward to next year and already thinking of what I'd like to train for. I will then be known as a Runner AND a Swimmer with no problems...except maybe the bike - but that tri thing is a whole other topic.

Our Cobourg Correspondent Provides PEC Marathon Air Times

By Ken Stubbings

Oh No, we have been "white flagged" as not paying our dues. A note to all you other "flagged" people on the membership list, we owe the club money to keep this excellent news letter going. I hope the collection guy does not run to my door for cash. But can he catch me? Dear membership captain, who do we make the cheque to?

Event update: The Prince Edward County Marathon from October 2004 is set to air on TSN, at the following dates and times.

Sunday, April 24, 2005 at 11:30 am

Thursday, April 28, 2005 at 12:30 pm

Monday, May 2, 2005 at 1:30 am

Tuesday, May3, 2005 at 4:30 am

You may see some familiar faces. Hopefully, they will not change the airing date again. (Ken came 3rd overall in this event and rightfully expects significant air time.)

For you runners planning to do Massey this year, spring is here and your training program should be starting, now. To keep motivated on the long runs, just keep repeating "pancakes" over and over.

Ken

Run Club Update - by Donna Smrek & Lise Edwards

The Running Room Club Update: April 6, 2005
Sudbury (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

Congratulations to all those that participated in the Spring Tune-up on Sunday - reports are that although it was windy everything went quite well and some of our runners had some very good times.

Vince reported that Alicia Kaye posted a personal best and that Bob and Diane finished strong, upright and he thought that Diane's foot was just in front of Bob's so she won:)

We have posted all the results at the store so come on in and take a look.

The For Women Only clinic is 40 strong on Monday nights and the Learn to Run has started on Saturday mornings - there is still room available in both clinics so if you are interested come on out and make good use of the beautiful spring weather to get ready for the summer event season. We also have a 1/2 marathon clinic heading to Massey. Our 5 Km clinic will be starting on April 28 in preparation for the Firecracker 5 Km on July 1, 2005.

Our spring/summer clothing is arriving daily to get you in the mood and the gadgets (Forerunner 301) are here to help you 'geek' out.

A reminder that everyone is welcome to our Practice Sessions on Wednesday @ 6:00 pm and Sunday @ 8:30 am. Our clinic members will be completing their scheduled runs however everyone is invited to join them and try out group running - it's great for motivation.

Next on our event schedule is the Carrier Industrial Sun Run for Diabetes on May 1, 2005. This run had been revamped and relocated to help bolster participation. It will start at the Lilly Creek Pavillion and include 2 km, 5km, 10 km and 1/2 Marathon routes. Further details on Sudburyrocks.ca and in store.

FiTFRiENDS 5 Km Run/Walk will take place on May 8, 2005. This is a charity event scheduled for Mother's Day and benefitting the YWCA Genevra House. Lise and I are the Race Directors so we expect to see everyone out at the event either participating and/or volunteering:) Registration details at sudburyrocks.ca / runningroom.com / or in store.

As mentioned previously we are in need of volunteers for both the Sun Run and FiTFRiENDS so if you are available and willing please donate 3-4 hours and support the events and participants - any of those high schoolers that still have some hours to get could pick up 7 hours for both events.

Check out Channel 10 Lise will interviewed on Wednesday.
