Hamilton's "Around the Bay" Race Weekend Results

This was Hamilton's 111th running of the "Around the Bay" Road Race.Yes, it was first run way back on Christmas Day in 1894, fully three years ahead of the Boston Marathon. The distance has varied slightly over the years from around 19 miles to the present day 30Km (18.63 miles). In the last few years the run has expanded greatly by the addition of 2 Person and 3 person Relays in the 30Km event as well as a 30Km Walk. And there's also a 5Km Run for those on a shorter training program. I believe all the events attracted over 6,000 participants to the city on Sunday.

The primary reason I mentioned this was Hamilton's 111th running was to boast about my 8th year in a row toeing the line to head "Around the Bay". Regardless of sickness or weather I was able to start and finish this run every year since 1998. And I thought this was a pretty big deal, probably making me "King of the Rocks". How wrong and shocked I was to learn that our newest addition to the Rocks!! Club has run this event "17" TIMES. Yes, Tim Uuksulainen from North Bay, has eclipsed my puny record by a factor of 2. So on I humbly go. My plan is to at least run 10 before I slink off into even more obscurity. By the way, Tim is actively involved in the running community in North Bay plus he also belongs to a Toronto running club plus he also writes for the Ontario Roadrunners Association. Good to have you on board Tim.

We had plenty of Rocks!! and friends in attendance this year as well as a 3 Person Relay Team from our local Running Room. And, while the weather was a bit iffy, all participants did well. I will note Henriette Waschuk came first in her age group in the 5km event. Shawn Schryer did get his coveted silver medal for coming in under 2:15 while Brent Walker was breathing all over that time but just missed at 2:16. Kerry Abols from Sudbury did get gold for his under 2 hour effort and two runners from North Bay performed extremely well. Ed McColm came 27th overall and third in the 45-49 Male group with a 1:55:57 run while Angela Batsford came 2nd in her age group with a 2:03. Congratulations Everyone on a job well done!

Runners Thoughts

Lise Perdue writes:

I thought this race deserved a little input on my part. First, I would like to congratulate all of our Sudbury Rock friends that would include you Vince, who all completed the race with flying colors despite the crappy weather. Keep up the good work guys and gals. Your determination and love of the sport eventually pays off. Congrats also go out to our non-rock friend, David Hemphill, who was running The Bay for the first time and finished in less than his predicted time. Yeah … David!!!

I now have to thank my little sister, Suzanne, who joined me at the 18 k mark at the start of the hills. I always say I can run the long distances on my own, but man she sure lifted my spirits and kept my legs pumping. As one of the walkers we passed along the way said: “you are just a breath of fresh air”. Thank you Suzanne I hope to be able to do the same for you one day.

It was also nice to see some familiar faces on route such as Lise Edwards who was pacing all 3 of her 10 k relay ladies and passed me at the 6 k mark like the energizer bunny. I must also thank Bob Bagley who acted as their pit crew, but was sure to see if I needed anything. I can’t help but get a warm fuzzy feeling when I see people I know out there who care.

David Hemphill writes:

Thanks again for the good time and advice at the run on Sunday. Pass along my thanks to Sheila and Brent as well.

Karen Beaulieu Runs Knoxville Marathon

Our Southern Rock!! is racing again. Only 2 weeks after the very hilly Whitestone 30Km Road race, Karen pounded out the miles in the First Annual Knoxville Marathon. She was doubtful of a respectable time going into the run as some injuries were just not letting go. Not to worry. She pulled of a good overall time (3:46) and came third in her age group to boot. Congratulations Karen!

She writes:

Hey guys I did survive the Knoxville marathon all by myself. I must say I much prefer running 26.2 with my trusty sidekick Monique. Maybe next year I can talk someone into coming to do it with me(hint hint) Although I was plagued with that darn injury I was pleased with my time as I truly thought I would come in at 4hrs.+ I did have to walk up a few hills the last 5 and even a few flat areas but all in all it could have been worse. I did pull up to one fellow at 13 miles and after he informed me that he had just run a marathon yesterday(Sat.) I thought I should keep all whining to minimum. The first half is the better part of the course and also the hilliest, the second half had some nice historical homes that were just beautiful and we did get to run on one of the ramps which was very cool but at the time I did not appreciate where I was as it seemed to be 20 miles long and i hated being able to see runners wayyyyy off in the distance ahead of me. I thought the Knoxville P.D. and Army Reserve did a great job of directing traffic and they were all friendly in spite of standing there all that time. Yes Vince I did remember to thank nearly every one of them for being there. I was a great Canadian ambassador.... Even the Kenyans whined about the course so it's not just me all the time guys. The weather was perfect for us all you needed was a jog bra, shorts and that was it. A beautiful sunny day. Now I just have to gear up for the Flying Pig and that is it for me. I really missed running with old gang and look forward to running with you guys this summer. Ms. B

Congratulations to all of the runners and walkers that attended and successfully completed the “Around the Bay 30k” on March 20, 2005. The weather was great, approximately 6,000 participants and our own Running Room Graduating 10k class entered the relay event and all finished with smiles and medals.

The weather has been great for running and our spring and summer stock continues to make its way into the store.

Clinic running/walking schedule for this week:

½ Marathon Clinic (Sun Run) – 9 hills
10k clinic (Sun Run) – 5 k
Marathon Clinic (Ottawa Marathon) – 7 hills

We will be closed this Good Friday and also Easter Sunday so if you are interested in doing a long run the Sudbury Rocks running group runs out of Cambrian Fitness on Saturday mornings at 9:00 a.m. You are also welcome to come by the store on Saturday and run your favorite route although we won’t have any group leaders to help you along the key box and facilities are always a bonus when you are out and about.

Track North News - by Dick Moss

Wednesday, March 23, 2005

Lisa Labrecque of Sudbury's Track North Athletic Club, placed 78th at
the World XC Running Championships in St. Etienne France last weekend.

"It was a disappointing race," said Labrecque. "I got caught behind
some slower runners at the start, was bumped and spiked and the next
thing I knew, I was surrounded by other runners near the back of the
pack. I'm afraid I expended too much energy on the first lap trying
to get out of that mess and move up through the field."

The Canadian team placed 9th out of 16 teams, led by Olympic 1500m
finalist, Carmen Douma, who placed 25th. Twenty-eight countries were
represented in the race.

The 4k race, conducted in 28 degree heat in front of 28,000 fans,
followed a winding course that forced runners to cross dirt mounds,
logs and, strangely, a patch of manure.

Please be advised that we will no longer be practicing at the Sudbury Arena (yahoo!) on Wednesdays. Until the snow is off of Loach's path at the university we will continue to meet at Lockerby, including this Wednesday at the regular time - 4:45pm.

Be prepared to run outside for all future practices including this Wednesday.

We had a great turnout for our first group hill workout tonight.

See you all Wednesday.
