The Chilly 1/2 in Burlington
wasn't Really so Cold...
In fact the predicted snow never did appear, the
roads were clear and dry and even the temperature cooperated
with plus numbers. And the wind only a small factor on the Lakeshore.
So the runners had no real excuses not to run a good time.
There were over 1400 finishers in this year's
event making it a fast growing run from under 500 about 5 years
ago. I believe the directing and run organization have got better
since the early days as well. The start/finish works very good,
the course layout is excellent and the policing and marshalling
leaves nothing to be improved. I can't speak for the award ceremonies
as, unfortunately, I haven't had the need to attend in the past
few years. But Karen Cowling (3rd Female and Rock!! from Val
Caron), her friend Rod Henning (1rst Master) and Jamie Black
(2nd Master and old Sudbury native) seemed pleased with their
prizes.
The rest of us Rocks!! and friends were very pleased
with our Tim Horton's Finishing Medals even if some were less
than enthused with their times. I know I was sure happy to be
able to run an ok time in the middle of winter and I believe
Paul Washchuk is pretty stoked about coming 3rd in his age group.
One of the best parts, after the shower and the
bullshit bragging, was the celebration lunch at Milestones in
Burlington. Some Rocks!! may have indulged in a sensible manner
but I had my usual 1/2 pound burger and fries. The run and food
were excellent and I'll be back next year to do it all over
again.

Fellow Rock!!
Sheila Yaw MacLean Writes about "The Test"
Just got home from Burlington and couldn't wait to email
you with the
results of the test that I took while doing the Chili Half
Marathon for the
4th year in a row. "Test, what Test" do you say?
It was a test to
determine how much wine a drinker with a running problem could
actually
consume the night before a race. For this test I needed two
volunteers. Of
course the first one was me and the second one was my very
very good friend
Jan. Jan didn't know she took part of this elaborate, very
scientific test.
Sorry Jan, I couldn't tell you before hand. Please forgive
me.
We arrived in Burlington earlier than planned, thanks to
Monique, had a light lunch and
went to our hotel room to start the test. Steve and Suzanne
our Burlington
correspondents had invited our group for dinner to celebrate
the birthday of
our most favorite, now 7 year old little girl Elle and to
help in the carbo
loading for the race. So off we went for pasta and to continue
with the
test. The dinner, as usual was amazing and the wine, well,
we were doing
our best not to fail the test. Thanks Steve and Suzanne for
a great
evening. Vince, in his usual way, kept a very watchful eye
on moi to make
sure I wasn't over doing it. Remember, he didn't know about
the test. We
did get help from the others with the test. Back to our hotel
to, yes,
continue the test and to meet up with Jan's old friend and
very fast runner
Karen Cowling. Which, by the way was 3rd female in for the
half marathon
and obviously not part of the test.
The next morning we awoke to grey skies, lots of wind and
a little bit of a
headache. Jan and I ran the race together which we haven't
done in a long
time and enjoyed every foot of it. We ran like the wind, although
if you
looked at our times one would think we ran against the wind.
We finished
the race and I met my ultimate goal. What's my ultimate goal
you ask??? To
finish a race vertical and smiling and to have fun. The Chili
Half Marathon
has always been a great race to accomplish that goal. Now
Around the Bay
next week will be a different story. Thankfully the test will
be over.
Thanks again to all my very special friends
who helped get me through this
most difficult weekend.
P.S. We passed the test with flying colours

Our Tennessee Correspondent
Gripes Her Way Through Another Challenge
Karen Beaulieu took on the difficult
Whitestone 30k in Tennessee this weekend with the hopes of doing
well, placing in front of a close competitor and not complaining
while accomplishing the tasks at hand. The first two roadblocks
were flung aside without issue. The third however may be toooo
much to expect. Let the whining begin...
Karen writes:
Hello fellow rocks . It
was a cool 58 degrees today , actually the high. Race temp.
was low 40's perfect for running. I wish I could say the route
was perfect. Yeah I know get ready for the whine... I hate that
course and will never run it again. I have a problem with seeing
the same race monitors 3 times. That means we ran the same route
3 times and the same disgusting, gross too many hills.. wah
wah . I don't know what was worse the mental challenge or the
same old hills again and again..I will volunteer next year so
you don't have to listen to me whine again. Never fear I will
have something new to complain about next time as I feel it
is my duty to keep Vince and the girls amused. I let Beverly
pace us the first couple of miles but it was not her day today.
She does not do a lot of distance so this race was going to
favor moi. Yes Vince I did manage to squeak by her and come
in at 2:32 . It was a very tough run. Unfortunately my achilles
acted up at 15miles so I had to resort to walking up the hills
after that. You said you would be with me during the race Vince
but where the heck did you disappear to at the 16mile mark?
You were missing in action and no longer speaking to me so I
was on my own ...thanks . How did you guys do at Burlington?
I hope it wasn't too cold and everyone did well. I took much
comfort in the fact that you guys were also running a 30k so
it helped a little stress little. I must admit that I thought
my time would be worse so all in all it was a good day.(I think)
In two weeks it's the Knoxville marathon and I am registered
for the flying pig . Still looking for someone to git jiggy
with. No takers yet. I have officially started a NYC fund and
have a whole 15$ in it . Don't worry it will grow as I would
love to join everyone in New York City. Let me know how you
guys did in your race and feel free to whine all you want. Until
the next race bye guys Karen

New York City Marathon
Anyone?
This November members and friends of the Sudbury
Rocks!! Running Club will attempt to add the New York City Marathon
to our list of accomplishments. As most of you are aware the
marathon now has a lottery entry system. To ensure ALL runners
wishing to go do gain entry into the race, we will be booking
through a travel agent who guarantees our spots. Our entries
will include optional travel arrangements (plane or bus) , optional
hotel arrangements (New York or New Jersey) and the guaranteed
entry. Non running supporters are welcome at a reduced price.
Principle Sudbury Rock member, Monique Fournier, has taken on
the task of organizing the trip for us. She has provided more
information below. Please contact her directly if you are interested.
Hello fellow runners,
The following information is for those interested in running
the New York Marathon, November 2005 who don't have a qualifying
time or did not enter the lottery.
Package deals are offered through Thomas Cook Travel Agency
for running groups where your entrance to the marathon is guaranteed.
The more the merrier and possible cheaper rates with larger
numbers of participants.
Please look over the information to help you make a decision
of whether to join the fun or not. The travel agency can also
alter the packages within reason and possibly at an added expense
for individual needs/desires.
If you have any questions or want clarification on any of the
information please contact me at; phone 566-5004
or e-mail moniquedave@sympatico.ca
There is a deadline for you to commit and pay half the costs.
Because the lottery is completed in May the travel agency recommends
registration by mid April to guarantee spots on the bus, in
the hotels and in the race. The travel agency also prefers that
all the info be sent together if there is a group planning to
go. In order for me to get all the info to Thomas Cook before
the recommended deadline I would like commitment and payment
with registration completion no later than April 4th, 2005.
Hope to hear from you with great interest.
Monique

Swim drill of the week - The fist drill
SFC Nickel Loppet a success
YTri members score age group wins in Peterborough and
Ottawa!

Sunday runs are back!!
YTri Weekly Schedule
Swim drill of the week -
The fist drill
Many beginner swimmers believe that their hands are the
most important part of the catch and pull phases of the
freestyle swim stroke. While our hands do provide the
great feel for the water that can initiate a good catch,
our "paddle" also includes our forearms, which
too often slip through the water ineffectively due to
a low elbow position.
One great way to engage the forearms in the catch and
pull phases of the stroke is to practice the fist drill.
The drill is simple to explain; just make fists with your
hands and swim freestyle. In order to gain propulsion
at all, the forearms must find a way to catch and pull
the water.
The fist drill can be tiring and frustrating at first,
but it does a fabulous job of improving your elbow position
during the catch and pull. With practice, the fist drill
can approach the feel of actual freestyle swimming. Then
add your hands back into the equation, and you can really
pull the water!
For more help with this and other drills, come out to
the YTri Wednesday swim from 6:00-7:30am. All levels of
swimmers are welcome for this workout which combines technique
development, fitness and fun!
SFC kicks off with Sofie
Manarin Nickel Loppet
On February 20, the 2005 Sudbury Fitness Challenge kicked
off with the Sofie Manarin Nickel Loppet. A total of 80
skiers toed the line and skied a variety of distances.
Conditions were fast and abrasive, challenging the skiers
technique, waxing skills and double poling strength.
In the adult events, Paul Lammens (1:34:21) and Alison
Godwin (1:54:37) won the 30km event, Brendan Waddell (53:13)
and Patti Kitler (1:20:46) won the 15km event, and Dean
Waddell (20:56) and Erica Bota (27:16) won the 5km event.
In the Dairy Queen Youth Challenge, Jeremie Bourque (6:46)
and his sister Florence Bourque (7:48) took top honours
in the 1km event while Victor Hopper (9:24) and Emmilie
Tomini (13:01) were first across the line in the 2km event.
All finishers earned Sudbury Fitness Challenge points,
which are tabulated for 6 events taking place from February
through August. The next event is the SFC Sun Run for
Diabetes scheduled for Sunday May 1 and will feature the
Dairy Queen Youth Challenge 2km walk/run as well as a
5km walk/run, 10km run and a Half Marathon run.

YTri members score age group
wins in Peterborough and Ottawa!
The month of February saw several YTri members come out
of hiding to participate in various events throughout
the province. In particular, Amanda Kosmerly traveled
to Peterborough to run the 5k at their half marathon and
5k event, and Katherine Knight traveled to the famous
Keskinada Loppet near Ottawa to give her best at the 50km
classic ski event.
How did they do? Well it turns out that Amanda rocked
her first 5k of the season in 20:30 to win her age group.
A handful of other locals went down as well and their
results can be found at
http://www.sudburyrocks.ca/Results/2005/02-27-2005%20Peterboro%20half%20and%205k%20Results%20revised.htm
Katherine took a little longer to finish her event (ok,
it was 10 times longer) but also managed to win her age
group with a 4:34:03 - more than 40 minutes ahead of second
place! Several other locals traveled to the Keskinada
as well, including Kerry Abols who finished 13th in the
50km classic race only to come back the next day and take
7th overall in the 50km freestlye, out of a field of over
450 skiers!

Congratulations guys!
Katherine writes about her experience:
Hey Mike,
Good to hear from you. Now I'm
really curious as to how you found out about my
latest endeavour...Who told you?
I did the Keski on a whim with my housemates and a few
others from my team. The
initial plan was for some of us to just ski it together
and finish. (Although I
had been fighting an ongoing mental battle of whether
or not I was actually
going to race it, losing sleep over it the night before).
We began together and
pushed through the first 10k until the pack thinned out.
Then something in me
was triggered and I kept pushing, even though they'd taken
up a relaxed pace.
Things really picked up around 35km in, partly because
I realized that I had
17km left and partly because I'd passed people from my
team who had taken off
ahead of me. I really hammered through the last 17k, took
a wrong turn (rumor
has it that Kerry did the same thing) but managed to go
hard through to the
finish.
It was interesting for a couple of reasons. In the last
17k, I didn't see
another woman out there. This distance is completely dominated
by men, in
particular those who are 60+. Also interesting because
I wasn't sore, nor
excessively tired. Not even the day after (after a night
on the town in
Ottawa). Possibly a sign I didn't go out hard enough.
But no complaints for a
race in which I didn't start racing until 10k in.
Katherine
Mark your calendars - Spring
Tune up 5k coming April 3
Once a staple of the Sudbury Running Calendar, we are
lucky to have a true spring tune up back in town. This
one takes place at Cambrian College on April 3 and is
being organized by YTri Member Amanda Kosmerly.
Amanda Kosmerly writes:
Hi Mike,
Could you please forward this to the tri club and anyone
else who may be interested. Please encourage your group
to forward this to anyone on their contact lists too.
Also, some people were asking about the male and female
overall winner cash prize, we are planning on using 10%
of the entry fees collected. I'm guessing we will have
$50-$100 each. Hope you are well.
