Run Club Update - by Donna Smrek

The Running Room Club Update: January 10
Sudbury (Cedar Pointe Plaza)

As we start 2005 I look back and review a fantastic year. I've had the opportunity to witness some great individual performances as well as watch new members of the running/walking community establish and achieve their goals - including some individuals that astounded themselves with what they could do.

It has been inspiring watching the Learn to Run members expressions as we ask them to repeat a run 1 minute and walk one sequence, they are not sure they can do it. Then just 10 weeks later watch the absolute joy on their faces as they complete their first 10:1 rep and ask for more:)

As the new session of clincs begins I see excitement, apprehension and determination in the faces of the individuals that come through our door and it has motivated me to take a look at my own goals and ask myself 'what can I REALLY do?'

As you set your goals for the year and design your programs we hope you will consider one of our clinics both to obtain instruction and information and to find that motivation in numbers that these winter days can require.

We have all new clinics starting from Learn to Run to Marathons, see the schedule below:

Walking: February 27 - Sundays at 12:00 noon
Learn to Run - Jan. 10 - Mondays at 6:30 pm
For Women Only - Jan. 15 - Saturdays @ 10:00 am
5 Km - January 6 - Thursdays @ 6:30 pm
10 Km - January 10 - Mondays @ 6:00 pm
1/2 Marathon - January 6 - Thursdays @ 6:00 pm
Marathon - January 25 - Tuesdays @ 6:30 pm

For the walkers out there we want you to know that we now have a line of Walk FitWear to help make your lives more fun as well and our first 5Km Walk Clinic will start on February 27, 2005. We will start with a 10:1 Power Walk/ Stroll and help you build your milage (kilometerage?) and strength over the following 10 weeks.

Some of our Spring Line has already arrived however let's enjoy these last few MONTHS of winter and get out there and have fun.

One more note as we sit in our comfortable environments and fret about what to wear on our run/walk please consider what you can do for those that are not as fortunate. The Running Room home page has direct links to organizations that are helping provide aid to those in Asia trying to re-establish life after the disaster.

Run Happy Run True
Donna

P.S. A little bird told us that Lawrie Oliphant, a regular Run Club member, is having a birthday tomorrow. We understand that he is closing in on a new age group (I'm not allowed to say which age group) and we wish him all the best in showing the youngsters in his present age group what experience can do:) Happy Birthday Lawrie.

The indoor season begins! We'll be starting this Saturday January 8th at Lockerby Secondary School
----------------------
Practice Locations
Tentatively, we'll be training on Mondays and Saturdays at Lockerby.

Wednesdays are a bit up in the air. There will be a practice at the Sudbury Arena. However, we may also be holding a practice simultaneously at Lockerby - more on this in the future.

If you are a university runner who is not competing indoors, I'd avoid the Arena (it's very hard). Probably the same if you are a beginning elementary-school age runner. We can discuss this, however.
---------------------
Practice Times

Mondays and Wednesdays: 4:45 PM
Saturdays: 11:00 AM
--------------------

Directions
-------------------
Arena:

After 4:30 PM, you have to use the After-Hours Entrance. It's the side of the Arena that faces Cactus Petes and the Police Station. It's close to the back parking lot and has a big sign saying it's for after-hours use.

---------------------------
Lockery Secondary School:

Directions to Lockerby SS:
From the University: Turn Left at Science North onto Paris St. Run past Lily Creek Park to Walford Road (just past the Travel Lodge Hotel). Turn right and run a block to Ramsey View Court. Turn right - you'll see Lockerby

On Weekdays: use the main entrance, take the first hallway to the right, walk past the bathroom then take the stairs on the right that go down to the gym level. Turn left away from the gyms. We meet in the wrestling room that's at the end of that hallway.

On weekends: The front door will be locked. If you get there before I do, you may be able to use the gym entrance (it faces the parking lot). However, the preferred door is past the gym entrance. There is a side door that we will leave open for you - it faces the field. Once inside, walk straight ahead until you come to the hallway. Turn right - at the end of that hallway is the wrestling room.

YTri News - by Mike Coughlin

Happy New year Everyone!

I hope everybody had a great holiday season full of family friends and food!
Now that its January, I am sure you are all chomping at the bit to get your
2005 training program up and running.

This year, there will be plenty of options for you to swim bike and run the
YTri way. Once again, Friday night brick workouts will be the cornerstone
of our program and you are welcome to bring your own bike and trainer to
these workouts. The format will be 60 minutes of cycling, 30 minutes of
running and 30 minutes of core/stretching, UNLESS there are more people than
bikes in which case the bike/run will be 45 minutes each. Workout goes
6:30-8:30 in the spin studio. Other workouts include a Wednesday morning
swim (see below) and a Sunday morning cycling/core class (see below) where
you are encouraged to bring your own bike and trainer although spin bikes
will be available.

2005 YTri Schedule

Wednesday Swim (starts tomorrow!)
6:00-7:30am
YMCA Pool
All abilities welcome, come for all or part of the session.

Friday Brick (spin/run/core)
6:30-8:30pm
YMCA Spin Studio

Sunday Cycle/Core
8:15-10:15am (cycle 8:15-9:45, core 9:45-10:15)
YMCA Spin Studio
Bikes and trainers encouraged, spin bikes available

**Note: Although there is no formal run planned for Sunday due to the cycle
class, those that choose to run can meet at the Y at the same time and then
join the class at 9:45 for the core portion. If you plan to do this, let me
know and I will spread the word.

See you there!

Mike
