The members of the Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club wish all runners the best of Seasons Greetings. We hope to see you all soon at our first run of the 2005 season, The New Years Resolution Run. See below for more details.

On January 15th, 2005, in the gentle mist of the African dawn, a group of intrepid and strong-willed men and women, including our own Rock!! - Martin Parnell, will begin a journey of both body and soul as they pedal towards a bold new frontier of cycling adventure. The group will be travelling from Cairo in Egypt to Capetown in South Africa. The trip will cover 11, 500 kilometres and take 120 days to complete.

My plan is to keep tabs on Martin as he treks through the dark Continent. Martin has agreed to be our "roving reporter" and I hope to track his progres as he travels through Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. I have added a "Tour Banner" at the top of the home page where all tour progress will be documented.

Good luck Martin!

COMRADES MARATHON – SOUTH AFRICA

June 16th, 2005

Plans are underway for a very special trip to South Africa for the Comrades Marathon.

The Comrades Marathon started in 1921 when 34 determined runners left Pietermaritzburg for Durban to commemorate their comrades who fell during the Great War. This traditional event has occurred every year, with the exception of the World War II years, and has grown from 34 to over 13 000 runners annually. The Comrades Marathon is a cherished national treasure and attracts thousands of runners, spectators and television viewers every year. We invite you to come and participate in this great event and experience one of Africa’s greatest adventures.

KwaZulu-Natal is often referred to as the "Garden Province" of South Africa, a province of extremes. The coastal regions being lush with green sub-tropical vegetation, the Midlands with its rolling grass hills and meandering lanes and finally the giant basalt peaks of the breathtaking Drakensberg Mountains. This is also home to the Zulu nation and the greatest ultra distance road race - the Comrades Marathon.

Note: Entry Fees for the Comrades Marathon are not included and you must qualify. See www.comrades.com for qualifying times.

Flight prices from Toronto start at $1820.00, from Vancouver $2030.00.

Durban Accommodation at the Balmoral Hotel is $75.00 per person per night based on two sharing a room.

We offer optional tours for those wishing to extend their visit to South Africa:

Garden Route 4 day Safari from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town

Marangu Route 6 days– the easiest and simplest route to the summit of Kilimanjaro.

4, 5 or 6 day Safaris in Kruger National Park.

Track North News - by Dick Moss

Thursday, December 09, 2004

from Darren Jermyn

University of Windsor Track and Field Press Release

Madeleine Woods, (Sudbury, ON - Track North) who is in her second year of competing for the Univerisity of Windsor's Indoor Track and Field Team (but first year running without being held together with glue and duct tape) started the 2004/2005 indoor season with some solid opening season performances at the annual Blue vs. Gold intrasquad meet held earlier this week.

Departing from her regular long sprint events, Madeleine took on the role of "track superhero" in attempt to lead her Gold team to victory. Despite outstanding performances of 7.50m in the shot (apparently the poor fellow stuck officiating this event strained his wrist because he had to shorten the measuring tape so much) and a 3000m time over 16 minutes (Madeleine was forced to finish this in the dark because everyone left and they turned the lights off), Woods' Gold Team was unable to catch Blue this year.

It should be noted that Madeleine did run times of 1:41.44 for the 600m (run solo) and 43.29 for the 300m at this low key meet. Both of these times are very close to Madeleine's best times from her injury plagued season last year and are a good indication of things to come this season. Woods also set a new 60m PB of 8.31 seconds and ran a 27.5 second 200m relay split and also competed in the 1000m race (no word on if the lights got turned off for that one as well but it's a safe bet).

Following the meet, Woods commented that she looks forward to some appointments with massage guru Rickey Goudreau upon her return to Sudbury for the Christmas holiday. She did not comment on whether or not she would continue as a multi-eventer but in an unrelated story, OTFA field event officials have planned an emergency meeting to discuss the possibility of replacing measuring tapes with short lightweight rulers to prevent future overuse injuries among officials.
