In Memory of Jennifer Bromage

from the Sudbury Star:

Giving our Best

by Mike Coughlin

I am reprinting the following article from Mike Coughlin's last week's YTri News  just in case some of you may have missed that section. It's an inspiring read.

Mike Coughlin writes:

Over the past two weekends I had the opportunity to observe some of the top
university athletes doing their thing in two different sports. Two weeks
ago it was the Canadian University Cross Country Running Championships in
Guelph where our Lady Vees fought hard to a 13th place finish against the
best university runners in the country. This past weekend it was the OUA
Enyon Division Swim Meet held right here in Sudbury where our Men and Women
came an oh so close second to the University of Guelph.

In reviewing what I had witnessed at these events, I was struck by two
things. The first was just how much room for improvement we all have in the
various aspects of triathlon (or any other endeavour). This is not to say that we are not doing
great in our training and racing endeavours - just that it is incredible
what the human body can do when it trains itself properly. There is no
question that we limit ourselves primarily by what we think is possible, and
watching these university students swim and run so bloody fast demonstrates
that some really amazing things are possible (note that these are regular
people studying at university with no athletic scholarships and a range of
athletic backgrounds).

The second thing that struck me was that the fastest times were far less
interesting than watching what competitive sport reveals in us. In the
running race, our top seed Leila Angrand popped a rib out of place at the 1k
mark and had to fight the rest of the way just to finish. What resulted was
not a winning or personal best time for her, but was one of the gutsiest
athletic performances I have personally witnessed. Leila could not breathe
properly and was in serious pain for most of the race, but she gave
absolutely every ounce of energy she had to perform her best on that day.
While her result will not be remembered, I am convinced that the courage she
showed out there will help her reach new heights in the future.

In the swim meet, one of our Masters swim coaches Erin O'Neill was entered
in the 200m butterfly and was seeded in lane 1 (far from the fastest in her
heat). I was timing in lane 4 and almost forgot to record the splits for my
swimmer because of what happened next - Erin started even with the strongest
swimmers and then just pulled away over the back half of this incredibly
demanding event. By the time she hit the wall to finish she had recorded a
huge personal best, won her heat handily and posted a time that qualified
her for the National University championships in that event. Seeing her on
deck a few minutes later, there was a mixture of disbelief and strong
emotion in her eyes as she had clearly redefined what she thought was
possible.

These were both great examples of what sport can provide us, and why giving
our very best in our chosen endeavours is the most rewarding thing of all.

A Short Report from our Florida Correspondents

by Mike Carriere

We are unfortunately detained in this most inhospitable place, where even running is difficult with these high temperatures and no hills. Some how Carol and I will survive these desperate times and see you all in Vegas. Running with sun tan lotion on is really tuff!

Mike and Carol

Mike and Carol Carriere have recently taken up winter residence in Florida. Their bragging will soon stop when they find about 20 Rocks!! camped on their doorstep.

Good luck to you both

Trevor Shamas writes:

Sorry that I haven't made it back up to Sudbury as quickly as I thought I was going to. I miss those lunch-time runs. Thought I'd give you a progress update on the running front down here with the XSNRG bunch...

Last night we did 10 x 2 minute hill repeats. About 1 minute up hill and 1 minute down followed by a 1 minute rest was the way it worked out.

Last week we did a figure-8 around two neighbourhood blocks. Picture the left of the 8 as uphill and the right as downhill. It was 1km for a complete loop of the figure 8. We did 3 sets of 1 loop followed by 1.5 loops. Single loops were followed by a minute rest and 1.5's by 1.5 minutes rest.

Week before that was 6 x ~560 meter repeats around a flat block.

I've found a few folks who are roughly at my pace so I hang on with them through these things.

Jamie Black is running with this group, too. I didn't recognize him last week but heard him talking about Sudbury this week so I knew it was him. He' contemplating Las Vegas. Apparently, he was there when we were 2 years ago. There are one or two people that he runs with. Behind him is another group of maybe 6 or 8 guys, followed by my group.

All-in-all they're good workouts and there are certainly some good folks here, but I still miss the Rocks! Hope to see you all soon.

Trev.
