Do AWESOME!
Bentley and Evans
take Subaru Ironman Canada Championships
By: Helen Manning August 30, 2004
PENTICTON, B.C- Lisa Bentley ran
down her competition to repeat as the women’s winner at
Subaru Ironman Canada today in Penticton, B.C. while local triathlete
Tom Evans won
his first Ironman title taking first place for the men.
Bentley
, who has six previous Ironman victories to her credit, is a
35-year-old professional triathlete from Caledon, Ontario. In
10th place after the swim, Bentley
headed onto the run course in third place and ran down the leader
out of the water, Joanna Zeiger
(Bolder, Colo.) and former Ironman Canada champion Gillian
Bakker (Winfield, B.C.). Bentley commented at
post race interviews “"It was a really tough day
... I know I was the favorite, but it doesn't get any easier,"
she said. "You never know until the finishing stretch that
you're going to win."
Tom Evans,
a resident of Penticton, B.C., led out of the water and despite
the best efforts of Gordo Bryn
(Boulder, Colo) and
Olaf Sabatschus (Cologne, Germany) to chase
him down through the bike and run courses, held them off to
win his first Ironman. Greeted by enthusiastic home town crowds,
Evans, a 36-year-old
dentist said after the race” The support on the course
fwas great, it really helped to keep me going”.
Top five men:
Tom Evans, Penticton, B.C. 8:28:06
Gordo Byrn, Boulder, Colo. 8:29.55
Olaf Sabatschus, Cologne, Germany 8:33.55
Jasper Blake, Victoria, B.C. 8:46.55
Matt Seeley, Polson, Montana 8:53.24
Top five women
Lisa Bentley, Caledon, Ont. 9:16:02
Joanna Zeiger, Boulder, Colo. 9:28.57
Gillian Bakker, Winfield, B.C. 9:36:26
Sara Gross, Stirling, B.C. 9:54:27

"Hutch", a competitor
from Markham provides insight on the course:
Ok so this race was called an "Iron
Distance" race, I guess b/c of copyright issues. Let me tell
you the run portion of this half was extremely hilly! The swim
and bike courses were fantastic, cool, clean water, very little
wave activity, maybe even a slight current coming back to shore.
TZ was close to shore, however it did get very shallow about 50
yards off shore which meant a lot of dolphin diving before it
was shallow enough to run without killing your heart rate. Bike
course was basically "rolling hills", and a lot of them.
But all those downhills made up for the uphills, with a slight
tailwind on the way back. The first and last 7km were on a fairly
rough road, lots of steep but short hills, sketchy pavement and
even some gravel that had to be bypassed on a sidewalk for about
50 yards. But the majority of the bike (about 75km) was on Hwy
124 and it was fantastic. Run course - now if I would have known
there would be this many BIG hills I would have done a lot more
hill work. Two loops of 10.25 km, first 3km on flat packed-gravel
trail, beautiful, then 5km of some of the deadliest hills I've
run. I don't know what was worse, the uphills (heart and lungs)
or the downhills (quads and feet). Reaching the turn-around it
felt a bit daunting knowing that you had to run all those hills,
again. But it was nice to finish the race on 3 km of flats. This
race was well organized and fairly small, about 180 competitors.
It also rained for the entire race, 5+ hours of steady downpour.
Air temp was good so it ended up being a fine day. Outside of
the run I was happy with my splits: Swim 2000m- 30 min, Bike 90km
- 2:44, Run 21km - 1:58 (I normally run the half-mary in 1:40-1:45,
thanks hills!) So total 5:18, my race goal was 5:20, secret race
goal was 5:15, which I definitely would have hit if hadn't been
for those hills. Good race and I would do it again. If you like
challenging courses than the Parry Sound Half is for you.

Final Nepawhin Swim
- by Bob Jeffery
Just a note on the upcoming final lake swim at
Nepawhin. Some of us have still been swimming and we are planning
to show up on Monday, Sept 6 at 10:00 am on the Paris side of
Nepawhin. We will decide on the morning if the weather and water
temperature is sufficiently warm to go across and back. Wet
suits will be welcome and may now be necessary.
