NOW UNDERWAY!

The First Annual Dream Trail Run is now officially underway. The event started with opening ceremony speeches at the Running Room Store including Mayor David Courtemanche, Make A Wish Foundation Representative Martina Keaty and Dr Kirsty Duncan, the founder of the run and also the major runner from Sudbury to Toronto.

At 10:00 am Kirsty, David Courtemanche and three Sudbury Rocks!! kicked off the the run by starting down Highway 69 on the first leg of day #1 in her 6 day journey which will cover 44 miles per day getting her into Toronto for a finishing 5k on Thursday evening.

As soon as Kirsty and Company took off the First Annual Dream Trail 5k commenced starting at the Running Room and covering a loop course in Loellen. Lisa Labrecque was the overall winner in 17:59 and Joel Ruel was the overall male winner in 18:19. Click Here for All the Results.

There will be more info including some pics next week. By the way, tomorrow Kirsty starts her final day on Yonge St. just below Lake Simcoe.

Thank you all who assisted and volunteered. I don't have the list at home so I can't include your names.

Hi Vince,

I heard you had a successful event at the Dream Trail Run on Saturday. Congratulations!

A good number of us YTri'ers and Rocks!! Made the trek to do the Espanola triathlon Saturday morning. With the cold mornings we have been having, things were a bit chilly leading up to the race start but warmed up just in time to be bearable for wet bodies riding bikes. Before the start, Brent Walker found his borrowed bike had a flat and I was able to loan him my little tire irons to help fix it. Attempting to repack my repair kit and also pack my run transition bag at the same time, one of the tire irons went missing, but as usual there was no time to waste and I hurried to set up my bike and put on my wetsuit for the start.

Standing in the water, I saw Katherine, Gerry and Colin, all of whom took my Running Room Triathlon Clinic and all of whom were pumped to complete the goal event. High fives were given all around and agreements were made to meet again at the finish. Then the horn was off and so were we. The swim was fun and very challenging as we came back right into the sun and the glare was unbelievable. Did you ever see Raiders of the Lost Ark? It was just like that except for the people melting and all.

Onto the bike and the course was crowded with cyclists. Most of them were touring bikes however as there was some big group tour coming through Espanola at precisely the same time we were riding. After working hard to catch Bill Leonard on the way out of town, we rolled back into town together and managed to get lost for a block or two before finding T2. It was like we had our own tour going: "The back alleys of Espanola - a cultural adventure".

Somehow we found T2 and donned our shoes for the run. Within 50 metres I knew it was going to be a painful run. The stabbing sensation was excruciating and it just wouldn't stop. It felt like somebody was trying to cut the toes off of my left foot. I tried to run through it but it was just too awful. Then it dawned on me. "SO THAT'S WHERE THE TIRE IRON WENT!" (Note to self: It is not wise to ignore the pain that a tire iron in the shoe can dish out while running.) A quick stop to remove it and I was back on the road in considerably greater comfort (though there still was the running part to deal with).

All in all, it was a fantastic event put on by Steve and Christianne Tremblay and many great volunteers including Jan and Brent Weeres. I was thrilled to see all the YTriers, Rocks!! and friends finish, including my Running Room crew who were all smiles at the finish line. With the event behind us, we got down to the real business of devouring the post race food and soaking in the sunshine. And all before 10am too!

Mike
