Beaton Classic is Cancelled

Rob Marcolini provides us with this unfortunate information:

As you probably know by now, the beaton classic for 2004 is cancelled due to the lack of a race director (again!). you should notify your readership immediately of this and impress upon them the importance of this event and their valued participation in it both as participant and volunteer. with all the people who read this site it should be stated that sometimes its not enough just to man feed stations or do finish line times. people have to get behind the scenes to do the planning and not be so intimidated thinking that its a daunting process (it only is when there are not enough people involved) or think that there is always going to be the same people to do that for them. we had such a great turn out of participants last year and its very disappointing to have it cancelled for this year. this is a wake up call and (hopefully) people will respond. its too late for this year lets hope its not the last. vince you can post this message as is or just relay it any way you want. thank you for all the work that you do for us.

Inco Walden Firecracker 5k breaks attendance record

This was the ninth running of the Firecracker event and was the largest ever as 123 participants tackled the 5k event and 25 young ones charged through the 1k course. A few hardy walkers toured the 5k course as well. And the youngest participant won the draw prize for a bicycle. He will have to wait a couple of years yet to enjoy it as he toured the race course in a baby jogger.

In the 5k Darryn Jermyn was the overall winner in 16:40 and Kaitlyn Tallman took the female honours in 18:35. The masters male winner was Bill Thompson in 18:46 and our own "Rock!!" Karen Beaulieu was female master in 20:56.

Kudos go to Race Director, Ron Poirier, for putting on such a top notch event . Everyone was able to participate in a very good event - and - at the end ALL got prizes. Thanks to numerous sponsors, Breast Cancer Research in Sudbury will be presented with a generous cheque.

Paul Graham writes about his experience:

This past weekend was a busy one for me. I did my first 5k run at the
firecracker, and participated in the North Bay Triathlon. It was a fairly
successful weekend, and I'm pretty happy with my results, but mostly it was a
learning experience.

In the 5k run I started out with the fast group off the start. I realized this
was a mistake when I got to the 1 km marker at 3:45. There was no way that I
could maintain this pace, so I had to slow down to a more manageable pace.
Doing this meant that I got passed by a number of people, which is never a good
experience. In the future I'm going to have to make sure I pace myself better
and work having a stronger second half of the race. I was still happy with my
finish of 21:25, and look forward to improving on it.

Steve Matusch provides some race insight:

Hi Vince…
By the way – thanks for your advice Thursday – and of course you were right. Sure enough my splits went up through 1 to 4k, and only by virtue of swallowing a fair bit of pain was I able to bring it down a little bit on the last 1k. – 3:23, 3:45, 3:43, 3:54, 3:43.
I could have done a little bit better if I hadn’t tried to keep up with the lead pack during the first 1k. But – in my heart I REALLLLLY wanted to see how long on could hold onto those guys – only a little over a kilometer as it turns out!
Good event – well organized and a lot of fun. Should be even better next year. Remind me when you’re looking for prizes and sponsors next year – I’m sure we’ll pony up for something.

Italian Festival Run/Walk Soggy but Rewarding

The Caruso Club held its 32nd Annual Italian Festival this Sunday and for the second year in a row, a road race was included in the festivities. Unfortunately this Sunday was a wet one with the rains starting in the early afternoon and becoming a downpour as the day progressed. Was the race cancelled? DEFINITELY NOT! At 4:00 pm sharp, Bill Thompson and Ray Vincent led the wet but keen group of runners and walkers to the start line and sent us off with a firm, "On your Marks - GO! At that point the group splashed off to do 5 laps of the Gatchell streets finally finishing at the Caruso Club. I did mention the run was rewarding and it was in more than one way. The Organizers did a bang up job in tough conditions. The course marshals had it toughest of all handling not only the rain but also wet jokes from passing runners who were able to comment at this point. They all stayed at their posts regardless of the conditions to ensure all of us got safely to the finish and I commend them. I'm sure the finish line ladies had never done official timing before and we gave them a big confusing electronic stop watch and clip board and told them "Don't miss a number" - and they did fantastic. It was nice to see them take on that challenge with naive enthusiasm. The best part for me was the chicken and pasta dinner that came with every registration. For $6 each, Lise and I got to race and eat. To put more icing on the cake, Lise won her age group -AND MORE- which brought her a gift certificate for a free buffet. I was just edged out in my age group by Mark Donnelly or I would have got the buffet as well. (Note: When I say just edged out, I should point out Mark was a little further ahead than that - say 2 minutes and 45 seconds). Good run everyone.

Guembel and Kaye win in North Bay's Tri

Both Kyle Guembel and Alicia Kaye left the rest of the field far behind as they came in first and second overall in this years North Bay Triathlon. Both individuals have been competing at a very high level this year and the hard training is paying off well.

Other locals competed as well including Paul Graham who sends this report:

This past weekend was a busy one for me. I did my first 5k run at the
firecracker, and participated in the North Bay Triathlon. It was a fairly
successful weekend, and I'm pretty happy with my results, but mostly it was a
learning experience.
Sunday was the North Bay Tri. This would be my 3rd triathlon and the longest
distance to date. The race was going fairly well until about 30.5 km into the
32 km bike ride. I was going down the large hill quite fast and came to a
sharp s-turn. It wasn't until too late that I realized that I was going too
fast, and tried to hit the brakes. This locked my back wheel, which skipped
out from under me. I landed on my left side and skidded into the ditch landing
head first in a small creek. Luckily nothing major was hurt and I was able to
finish the bike and run 8 km to place 4th in my age category. However since
the overall winner (Kyle Guembel) was also in my age group I was awarded 3rd
place.
I have put some pictures and some more details about the incident on my webpage
and can be found here: http://www.paulgraham.ca/pictures/04_nb_tri/

Our Western Rock!! has become a Triathlete

Martin Parnell Writes:

Hi Vince and all rocks,

It's been a busy three week period. Two weeks ago was my first Olympic triathlon at Arbour Lake, 20kw west of Calgary. After surviving a 1.5km swim it was 44km bike ride up and back on highway 1A and a 10km run around the community. Total time was 3hr 12min 28sec (24/37 in age group) lots of fun with no lasting damage.

Last week end was the Great White North triathlon in the town of Stony Plain. I had planned to watch this Half Iron Man but I put my name on a wait list and got in. The swim was 2km in Hubbles Lake at the Allan Beach campground then off on a 90km bike jaunt to and back from the North Saskatchewan river ending with a half marathon through the town of Stony Plain. I came 313 /616 and 75/127 in my age group with a total time of 5hr 39min 44sec (full results on www.gwntriathlon.com) . More damage in this one (blistered toe) but repairs are possible.

Finally this weekend is the Calgary Marathon. The plan is an easy run with minimal damage. Race report to follow next week, all the best Martin
