Capital Race Weekend Revisited
Danielle
Cloutier writes:
Hello everyone,
I’ve finally put my racing shoes back on after a five
year break. Boy, do these shoes need a tune up. SLOW but sure,
I made it to the finish line.
I write this short note to thank those who’ve helped
me through this grueling 21 km run. (Somehow, the 21km seems
longer than what it use to be)
I wanted to thank Paul Washchuk for convincing me to run in
Ottawa. In recent times I haven’t felt the motivation
to run races. Thanks Paul for giving me that extra push. Now
I want to go bigger and better.
I also want to thank Vince
for helping me out with the training. One thing I’ve
realized about Vince is that he is very dedicated to helping
others achieve their goals; if you’re ready to commit,
he’ll go that extra mile for you. Thank you so much
Vince.
Last but not least, I
have to thank Stephanie Koett for coming out to Ottawa and
helping me make it to that # $?#%?”# finish line. Like
Vince, Steph goes above and beyond to help our running group.
I would like to mention however, that I’ve discovered
Stephanie’s secret for staying focused. : did you know
that she watches the butts of men running in front of her?
She forced me to look at that for 21km. What a job I had!
Thanks again Stephanie, it was a blast!
Hats off to all participants!
Paul
Washchuk writes:
I have not run a marathon
in 25 years. I had participated in the 1977, '78, and '79
marathon in Ottawa along with a couple of others, and decided
to participate in the 30th year anniversary of this race.
At the start of the race,
I positioned myself with Jesse W just ahead of the 3:40 Bunny.
When the gun went off and I had gotten about 100 yards ahead
of the start line when I heard a number of runners shouting
"You dropped your bottle". I did not know that they
where referring to me until a runner tapped me on my shoulder
and indicated that I dropped my 'gel' bottle about 20 to 30'
behind. I decided to work my way against the traffic (mob)
and retrieve it. Before I had completed the first km I then
observed my 'gateraide' bottle rolling along the ground beside
me. I stopped, bent down, retrieved it and almost got trampled.
So much for a grand start. I am sure I lost 20 to 30 valuable
seconds over this. I continued on and found that I was still
on the time projected for my first km. When I arrived in the
vicinity of where the 2nd and 3rd km markings should have
been, I found they where not there. As I was feeling good,
I continued at the same pace and found as I approached the
five km mark, I was ahead of schedule by 1 minute. I then
decided to look around and find someone who was running at
the same pace. I struck up a conversation with a chap from
New York State and found out after a couple of kms that his
goal was 3:30 which was faster than I wanted to go. I decided
to drop back and then met up with a couple who where hoping
to complete the race in 3:40 which was comparable with my
goal. He was from Florida while she was living in Minnesota.
We talked for the next 18 km when I noticed my legs where
starting to ache. I let them pull ahead and started to run
by myself. When I arrived at the 30 km marking my pace was
faster than the pace I ran at the 'Around the Bay Race' in
Hamilton. At this point the muscles in my legs where burning.
This brought back old memories as to why I had not run a marathon
in a while. I decided to stop at the next water station, and
fill my water bottle while giving my legs a break. This was
where the 3:40 Bunny and troop passed me. I felt dejected.
I motored on and noticed the 33 km marking on the next overpass.
I had 9 km to go to finish and I started to convert every
distance into miles to try and keep my mind off the pain in
my legs. At 35 km I passed the chap I met from New York. At
this point, I quickly calculated that if I ran every km at
6 minutes, I could still achieve my goal of 3:45. This perked
me up. At 37 km, the young lady from Minnesota was beside
me and I found out that Florida was somewhere behind. I couldn't
stick with her, but Lansdowne Stadium was nearby and I focused
on passing it. The pains from my legs where killing me. At
this point I wanted to know why I couldn't I be blessed with
legs like the Kenyans. I then focused in on the tall buildings
in the distance which where near the finish line. I finally
saw the crowd and finish line. Although the pain was excruciating,
I kept on running and ended up crossing the finish ahead of
plan. Got a little emotional when I finally realized what
I had accomplished.................. Was it all all worth
it? You bet your bottom dollar! "THANK YOU" Sudbury
Rocks for helping me achieve my goal.

Paul writes:
Hi Vince,
Congratulations to all who completed the Ottawa race! I myself
was torn
between running Ottawa or Halifax. I opted for the East coast
and paid a
price for it...hills, lots and lots of hills. The course was
tough but very
scenic. Parts of the course were on the Harbor front, other
parts through a
forest, there was even a part through a small town not unlike
Copper Cliff
flanked by a lake on one side of the road. For good measure
there was a
section that ran past a few very very large homes. I enjoyed
the race and
would recommend it to anyone who is seeking a different venue
but not
looking for a PR. I look forward to seeing some Sudbury Folks
in Toronto
this October.

A "Snowy"
Sun Run and now a "Sopping Wet" Mountain Bike Tour.
What's Next?

First a snow bowl in the May "Sun Run"
and now a thoroughly soggy "Mountain Bike Tour"
as the skies opened up on Sunday morning turning this event
into the muck bowl. The weather did dampen some spirits but
Tara Del Bosco from the Outside Store informed me 87 hardy
individuals did come out and competed hard.
Congratulations to to all you Bush Pigs for
a job well done.

Perdue
Pirates Run "Relay for Life" in Peterborough -
by Ken
Stubbings
Hello Everyone,
We had an eventful Friday night / Saturday morning in the
Peterborough area.
Most of you know Vince as our running coach. Unannounced is
his secret life being a member of a lob-ball team called the
Perdue Pirates. They came into existence in 1985 and cleaned
up in ball tournaments from the late 80's to mid 90's; hitting
such cities as Barrie, Lindsay, and yes Sudbury. They even
had a personal trophy which other teams fought desperately
to claim. (I am not sure where it is now. Maybe Vince sold
it at one of his yard sales.)(OUCH -
that was low Ken- vince)The primary members were Vince's
brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews, but sometimes the
rookie inlaws were brought in as "outlaw" members.
As the team members aged, the more relaxing, pasture land
game of golf took over. Except for Vince who new that the
aggressive sport of running, unlike golf, would help maintain
youth.
About a month or two ago, Vince's sister, Gail, took some
members out of retirement to put a team into the Canadian
Cancer Society's Relay for Life. The team consisted of Vince's
immediate family members Gail, Gary, Karen, Vern, Rosemary,
Beverly, Lynn; niece Carol; outlaws Diane and Ken; and Lynn's
friend Sharon. Bev's husband Wayne and Gary's wife Evelyn
were in as support staff.
The 12 hour event went by rather quickly. The weather was
100%. No wind or rain and a low temperature of 5 degrees .Before
the team hit the track, Gary reported needing an organized
game plan. (You can tell it is in the Perdue blood here, yeh!)
We came up with a 15 minute switch off roster, but changed
it to a every half hour. We did what every runner/walker loves
to do. Eat and run/walk. Not long after the first member finished,
we strayed from the plan as more than one member went out
to keep the listed runner company. Many members stayed out
for more than one hour at a time. The rest of us discussed
world issues, ate, carved some projects, ate, participated
in a silent auction and other event games, ate, napped, and
ate. A few members had obligations the next day, so they had
to leave early, but the roster designated person was always
on the track for their duration, sometimes alone, usually
with company. During the planning of the roster, I was considering
my own running schedule. I have been doing my long run on
Saturday. Early in the week I figured I would just do it on
Sunday. However I knew I would be tired from the 12 hour relay.
So I decided to run the 3:00 am to 5:30ish time slot. I had
never run at that hour of the morning, nor a long run on a
track. This would be different and possibly boooooring. But
it was not too bad. They had a DJ playing good music and the
time went buy OK. How many times can a person run around an
400m ellipse in 2:30:56? 85++++++, I think. It was 85 for
sure. Everytime I passed the finish sign I counted to the
next number. A couple of times I could not remember if I was
thinking of the lap I was on or the one coming up, so I added
a couple laps at the end. One thing about running a flat course,
it was fast. Perfect training for Massey. (No pancakes here
though.) I switched directions half way through to give the
legs a relief on the turning and camber action.
The event finished at 7:00 am. We did you proud Vince. The
Pirates had a person on the track for the entire time.
The Peterborough chapter of the event raised approximately
$73,000. The Pirates contributed between $1,200 and $1,300.
Congratulations to you all with your achievements at the National
Capital Marathon.
See ya soon, Ken.

Success
in Milton's Triathlon -
by Mike Couglin

Hi Vince,
Just a quick note to let you know how things went at Milton.
Steve Matusch
and I went down and had a blast. The water was brisk but the
weather was
warm and everyone was happy to get the triathlon season underway.
In my case, I was pleased to swim a personal best time since
I haven't hit
the pool a lot lately. On the bike, things were going great
until midway up
6th line hill (think Long Lake Hill only steeper) when my
foot snapped right
out of the pedal for no apparent reason. It was too steep
to get clipped in
and going again, so I had to run my bike the rest of the way
up, slipping
backwards in the bike shoes the whole way! Very embarrassing.
I managed to recover and had a lot more fun going down that
hill on the way
back. The run was fun too, taking place on a mixture of road
and trail.
Steve Matusch did great in his first triathlon (not including
the Beaton
Classic) and reeled in dozens of triathletes with his killer
run. I was
surprised to see many northerners in the race and have provided
their
results below, with YTri'ers, Rocks!! and friends in bold.
If you check out
this week's YTri newsletter, I have included Paul Graham's
account of the
race, also his first triathlon.
Muskoka is coming up in only 2 weeks!! Should be great fun.
cheers
Mike

Track North News
- by Dick Moss
June 7,
OFSAA Track & Field
Championships, June 3-5th, Etobicoke
Whew - what an OFSAA. Medals, lots of finalists and many PB's
in what was probably the first nice weekend we northerners
have experienced all Spring. Temperatures in the mid-20s and
sunny - great racing weather.
Here are just a few comments about our finalists, with complete
results below:
Gold Medal!
Kaitlyn Tallman, JG
1500
Kaitlyn has definitely learned how to run sound tactical races,
as she ran away from the curb, out of trouble and unleashed
a blistering kick (AKA, the "Tallman Fury") in both
the heat and the final. Her time in the final was an 11-SECOND
PB!
3k
After her 1500 performance the night before, there wasn't
much left in the tank, but Kaitlyn still managed to run a
PB.
Bronze Medal!
Paul Walker, SB
800m,
After Paul placed 1st in a close heat, the final was just
as exciting as he made a gutsy move with 300m to go (after
a SLOW 58 second first 400). Paul decided "catch me if
you can," bolted to the lead and led the race by as much
as 10 metres, holding off the entire field except for Ryan
Finn and Geoff Standen, with Standen catching Paul in only
the last few strides. Both heat and finals were PB's.
Finalists
Meghan Jutti, SG
1500
Two 1500m PB's in two days - and excellent finishing kicks
and good tactical running in both.
3k,
Not much left in the tank on this hot Saturday afternoon,
but Meg still managed to run close to her PB
JUNIOR MEN
Eric Ouellete, JB
800m, 7th
After shocking the race favourite by outkicking him in the
heats to advance to the final.
Midget Medalists from Sudbury
They haven't been training with Track North, but their performances
were so exceptional, that I have to mention them:
