The sun shone brightly at Cambrian College this Sunday morning for the second annual Fitfriends walk/run.This was in stark contrast to last weeks "Snowarama Sun Run.

The theme this year was "Doing it and More in 2004". And 226 entrants did just that. At 10 minutes after ten John Stanton, President of the Running Room , blew the official Fox 40 whistle sending the masses on their missions. Some were vying for an overall win, others were were trying for personal bests and still others were out for their very first official event ever. Everything from racing flats to baby joggers hammered up the road on the single 5k loop or double 10k loop

The winners (Run):

In the 5k Todd Withers (16:59) and Alicia Kay (18:59) blew their respective competition away. The 10k men's race was a hard fought battle with Kerry Abols prevailing over Kyle Guembel by a mere 2 seconds (35:28 to 35:30). In the women's 10k Ali Davis stayed comfortably ahead of second place Lynne Lamothe (46:27 to 48:25). Connor Anderson was easily the fastest youth in the 5k with a time of 26:05.

The winners (Walk):

Jean Labelle and Nicole Parsons took the honours in the 5k while Shirley Moraz came first in the 10k.

The Real Winners:

Everyone was a winner! All participants came out, did their best and had fun while doing it . At the same time they were providing much needed support for YWCA's Genevra House. Our community is made stronger by events such as this. Congratulations to all of you on a job well done.

The Doers:

These events don't happen by themselves as you well know. The driving forces: Fitfriends - Lise Edwards and Donna Smrek were primary doers with lots of help from their friends. Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club members and friends handled the course, water station and finish line. Lots of others assisted as well and I thank everyone muchly. Check out the Support list at "Fitfriends" website.

Half Marathon Clinic begins on May 25

For those individuals interested in expanding their running to the 1/2 marathon distance, I will be the instructor for the upcoming 16 week clinic offered by the Sudbury Running Room. The clinic should be of interest to those who can already run reasonably comfortable to 8 or 10k. Your running speed is not a factor. Our leaders will accommodate all runners. For more information call or visit the Running Room.

Half Marathon May 25, 04 - September 7, 04 (6:30 PM)
Sudbury: Cedar Pointe Plaza (Sudbury, Ontario) 523-4664

Healthy People for a Healthy Tomorrow - by Carol Coffyn

I am in a new position at the health unit now. I am a member of the Healthy Weights Action Team. We are working toward decreasing obesity in our city, which is going to take some time. The team is organizing a community forum on June 9 & 10 which we hope will lead to a large steering committee committed to a variety of projects dealing with obesity. I was hoping that you could post our brochure on the web site, as many of your viewers have a keen interest in our community as well as health related issues (i.e. nutrition and physical activity). Our web site is here(www.sdhu.com). Look under "What's New"

Good luck Carol.(vince)

Track North News - by Dick Moss

May 7

SUDBURYSPORTS.COM
I had a nice meeting with Randy Pascal, who has developed a website that reports on sports in Sudbury. It has tremendous potential, and Track North plans to be part of this tremendous resource, providing them with results, photos and article ideas.

On the current page, there's an article and photograph on Chris Hocking and his badminton exploits. Bookmark the following page.

KINSMEN AWARDS
Track North is well represented in the Kinsmen Sports Celebrity Awards nominations, with Lisa Labrecque nominated for Amateur Athlete of the Year, Leila Angrand and Sarah Junkin for Female Athlete of the Year, and me for Administration Award. There are even some TNOR alums who have been nominated for other sports: Devon Kershaw for Nordic Skiing and Denis Vachon for Power Tumbling. Thanks to the people who have sent in these nominations - we don't have a great history in actually winning anything, but it's nice to be recognized!

Andrew Ellerton Runs Huge PB!!

Well, Andrew absolutely busted one at the Len Paddock Invitational in Ann Arbor last night. He ran a personal best by 1.57, winning the event in 1:46.56!!!!

Not only did Andrew outkick two-time NCAA Indoor 800m Champion, Nate Brannen and beat Olympic 1500m runner Kevin Sullivan, he met the Olympic "B" Standard of 1:46.75. The "A" standard is 1:45.71

His time is the fastest run by a Canadian so far this year, and the 2nd fastest in the NCAA.

There's a great description of the race, a photo and a quote at the U. of Michigan website:

Way to go Andrew!!!

More on Andrew Ellerton's Performance:

According to Stats-Girl, Lisa Labrecque, and the IAAF rankings, Ellerton's time is 5th fastest in the world so far this year.

I must now pass along the mantle of the fastest Track North 800m alumni to Andrew. As I've mentioned to him, however, I am still the only TNOR alum to have run a 1:47 (he seems to have skipped the 1:47's entirely).

P.S. Another website report of the race, with photo: http://www.trackshark.com/
