Race Start in Hopkinton

RUNNERS WORLD DAILY NEWS

Ndereba, Cherigat Win Hot Boston
In a gutsy performance, Catherine "The Great" Ndereba won her third Boston yesterday (2:24:27) in unusually hot conditions. The men's race was won by Timothy Cherigat (2:10:37), in an upset. For these stories, check out Runners World's Special Boston Marathon Section.

Super hot conditions in Boston Marathon do not deter The Rocks!!

It became another "run for the hoses" in the 108th running of the Boston Marathon as temperatures soared to mid 80s in the shade and higher in the sun on the roads. The last time (1976) the temperatures soared like this and higher about 1/4 of the field dropped out. This year more than 1,000 entrants were treated at medical tents and over 1200 were not able to finish

Note this: ALL ROCKS!! FINISHED!!!!! Eight entered "The Big Show" and eight finished. Their times were slowed about 20 to 30 minutes but they ALL have the medal. A hearty Congratulations goes out to you guys from the rest of us.

Hi Sudbury Rocks
Well my mission was completed, I officially finished the Boston Marathon with a smile on my face. What a great time we had. I am glad the temperatures were not race friendly so I could party with the crowds without remorse. I could give you all the step by step details of the whole weekend as it was all a great time but I will only include my most memorable ones of the race itself. Early in the race just prior to the 3 mile mark I shared some refreshing water with Martin only to hit a couple of residential mail boxes and kiss the dirt. No Injuries just a good laugh by all who saw this happen. Of course Wellesley College was great, more so for Martin. He will be applying for a HR position there if he doesn't get on with the Hells Angels (little joke with the group). At the 13 mile mark I was a Virgin as Karen put it and away we went. Karen was a true partner, she zigged and zagged through the crowds gathering us refreshments as needed, popsicles, Mr. Freezes, ice, jelly beans. I drew the line at fig newtons and pretzels. Karen just had to try these, the woman with the fussiest eating habits at any given time!!! Well Heart Break hill came and went just as fast as, we soared up it passing all the walkers. Between there and the finish line I think we expended more energy weaving through the walkers than we did actually running. I know for a fact if it wasn't for the Bostonians this would have been a tough go due to the temperatures. We had plenty of water, showers, and nutrition all along the course to play it smart and cross the finish line with smiles. It was after that last little up hill grade and around the corner when I was going to disown my partner. "The finish is just around this corner" Karen said. As we rounded the corner and of course the finish line was not just there. As I spewed a few nasty words, Karen said "See way up ahead there, do you have any more juice in you to give 'er?" Well Vince she DID NOT do it to me again we crossed the finish line together.

It is so refreshing to know that us Great White Northerners played it smart and were all able to complete the marathon with fond memories. I know even John TEDALDI (another group joke) has some good memories considering his bad running shoes, the new Runners World magazine design and oh yeah his single son who will never meet this nice young Italian waitress we had.

See you on the roads.

Check your Bike by Sandra Kleppe

Fellow cyclists and friends,

We will be riding at the Delky Dozzi track on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00pm for our weekly practices. It is important to make sure that you machine is good to go. So please, if you haven't had a chance to already, do your bike check or arrange at a local bike shop, including for a tune-up. Don't forget that our coaches may also be able to provide this service as some of them have the necessary tools and provide this service at a reasonable cost to members.

This is an important part of keeping the training sessions safe as well, mechanical fitness can prevent crashes and accidents.

A rule of thumb is to replace your bike chain each season, and if your bike is new, watch for cable stretch at the gears and brakes which can cause gears to skip and brakes to not grip well.

Read below for some good information about the bike check. Some of the things you may not be familiar with and we can certainly guide you with instruction.

Thanks, and see you soon!
Sandra Kleppe, Secretary, Sudbury Cycling Club
