It's Boston Marathon time again - and Rocks!! are there

The 108th running of the Boston Marathon goes in Hopkinton Mass this coming Monday and seven members of the Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club will be there to join about 20,000 other runners in the dash to Boston. The run starts with the elite women going off at 11:31 a.m. and the rest of the field , including the elite men, at 12:00 p.m. Our Rocks!! are spread throughout different corrals but a few may attempt to run together. The run is televised live on ESPN so check your cable or satellite channels to see if it's available

Good luck Runners!!

Below is a list of our group. Karen Cowling, our distance runner from Hanmer, will be there as well and cheering them on - but not running this year.

Henriette and Paul Waschuk brave the London On. cold              to run 5 & 10ks

Paul writes about the experience:

After participating in the road races in Burlington and Hamilton in March of this year, Henri and I elected to go back to London, Ontario to take part in the 3rd annual "Run for Retina Research" on Sunday, April 4th. Last year, Henri ran her first race at this event - a 5 km. I should mention that the Run for Retina Research consists of 5 events - Junior Races, 2.5K Fun Run/Walk, 5K, 10K and Half-Marathon. It has grown to the extent that they had over 600 participants in the various events this year.

We arrived in London Friday evening. The weather on Saturday was sunny and warm. I anticipated that we would be running in a singlet and shorts. The weather channel mentioned that there was a possibility of freezing rain and/or snow overnight with cold temperatures for Sunday. And wouldn't you know, the weather channel was right! There was snow on top of frozen rain on the car in the morning. I started asking myself questions such as 'did we drive south or north from Sudbury', or 'what did we do to deserve such a down turn in the weather'. It was outright miserable on race day. The temperature was -4 degrees, the sky was cloudy, and the wind was awful cold. We had to wear extra clothing and still froze before, during, and after the race. Even wearing mitts, and a hat Henriette did not warm up at all. At times the wind gusts were so strong, you felt you were at a standstill even though you were moving. Henri's time in the 5k was slightly faster than last year with a chip time of 34:59. She was 4th of 13 runners in her age group (55 to 59) and 124th of 169 participants. I elected to run the 10k and came in first in my age group (60 +). Being a northern, I guess I was more conditioned to running in that weather, as it appeared others could not get moving. I came in 9th of 185 overall runners with a chip time of 47:53. Will we run this race again? Of course, the weather can't be bad 2 years in a row. Or can it?

Upcoming Local Runs

Mike Coughlin writes about the Sun Run:

Many of you have already stepped forward to help out on the day, but we are
still looking for a number of people to be marshals on the course. Bring a
friend and enjoy a spring morning with some runners! Email me to let me
know you are available. I will be in touch with volunteers by Thursday
April 29 about specifics.

The Track North Website now has photos of Lisa Labrecque's trip to Brussels for the World XC Championships. And also her Ekiden race in Yokohama, if you haven't seen them.

Andrew's NCAA Race

There's a video of Andrew Ellerton racing at the NCAA Championships. Andrew is the third leg (1:48.4) of the Men's DMR (Distance Medley Relay) - the team won the race in a new NCAA record, making Andrew Track North's third All-American.

By the way, Andrew ran a 1500m PB of 3:45.91 (about a 4:03 mile) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta 2 weekends ago. He finished the meet with a 48.8 4 x 400m relay leg. You can get more information on his exploits this year at the U. of Michigan Men's Track website at: http://www.mgoblue.com/section_display.cfm?section_id=199&top=2&level=2

Sudbury "Running Room" Store News

Click Above for Store Coupon

The latest "Running Room" store will be opening in Sudbury. The date is now confirmed and is Friday, May 7. Sudburians have long awaited the store's opening as many runners have been traveling to the Barrie, Oakville and Burlington stores to do needed shopping.

The store is now actively canvassing for staff members. Both full time and part time positions are available. The successful candidates must have running experience and be willing to instruct running clinics and be leaders in running sessions. Speaking French is an asset but but not a requirement for all staff members. The store will be open seven days per week. Donna Smrek, the new store manager, would like to have the staff confirmed by April 26. Please send your resume via e-mail to Donna at the Barrie Running Room location. The address is  barrie@runningroom.com
