Paul writes about the experience:
After participating in
the road races in Burlington and Hamilton in March of this
year, Henri and I elected to go back to London, Ontario to
take part in the 3rd annual "Run for Retina Research"
on Sunday, April 4th. Last year, Henri ran her first race
at this event - a 5 km. I should mention that the Run for
Retina Research consists of 5 events - Junior Races, 2.5K
Fun Run/Walk, 5K, 10K and Half-Marathon. It has grown to the
extent that they had over 600 participants in the various
events this year.
We arrived in London Friday
evening. The weather on Saturday was sunny and warm. I anticipated
that we would be running in a singlet and shorts. The weather
channel mentioned that there was a possibility of freezing
rain and/or snow overnight with cold temperatures for Sunday.
And wouldn't you know, the weather channel was right! There
was snow on top of frozen rain on the car in the morning.
I started asking myself questions such as 'did we drive south
or north from Sudbury', or 'what did we do to deserve such
a down turn in the weather'. It was outright miserable on
race day. The temperature was -4 degrees, the sky was cloudy,
and the wind was awful cold. We had to wear extra clothing
and still froze before, during, and after the race. Even wearing
mitts, and a hat Henriette did not warm up at all. At times
the wind gusts were so strong, you felt you were at a standstill
even though you were moving. Henri's time in the 5k was slightly
faster than last year with a chip time of 34:59. She was 4th
of 13 runners in her age group (55 to 59) and 124th of 169
participants. I elected to run the 10k and came in first in
my age group (60 +). Being a northern, I guess I was more
conditioned to running in that weather, as it appeared others
could not get moving. I came in 9th of 185 overall runners
with a chip time of 47:53. Will we run this race again? Of
course, the weather can't be bad 2 years in a row. Or can
it?
