February 12, 2004 News

On February 12 and 13 New Liskeard native Dave Deubelbeiss attempted to
break his own Guinness World record for 24 hour run on a treadmill. He has
vowed to break the 130.2 miles he ran previously.

24 HOURS ON A TREADMILL
WHAT DOES IT “REALLY” MEAN?

How far does David expect to go?
David expects to break the Guinness World Record of 138 miles. He is aiming to go over 150mi. How far is that? Well, it is about the distance from Toronto to London or Toronto to Kingston. Think steps. He will be taking about 310,000 steps. Now, that’s a lot of movement! He’ll be doing over 6 consecutive marathons!

February 13, 2004 - News

Well, did he do it?
... Here's the results...
David came up just short of the world record. The attempt - 152 miles. The
result - 136.09 miles! Not world, but a new Canadian record, he broke the
old mark (his own - 130.82)
Here are his MARATHON splits:
1) 3:45
2) 3:47
3) 3:49
4) 4:04
5) 5:45

ps. Monica Scholz comfortably ran jut enough miles to break the womens'
record of 98 miles. She decided to quit at an even number so skipped, hopped and ran
her way to 100 miles.

Congratulations to Monica!

The Sudbury Chapter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation invites you to be a part of our “Fit for Success. Finding answers. For life.” event on Sunday, February 29th from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.

And Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club Will be There!

From Shelagh Dabous - Corporate Program Director for the Sudbury Chapter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation:

INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE

The Sudbury Chapter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation invites you to be a part of our “Fit for Success. Finding answers. For life.” event on Sunday, February 29th from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.

This first time event will offer our area residents the opportunity to spend an afternoon finding out about the many choices for fun, physical activities available in our community. This should be a fantastic event to wrap up Heart Month.

To the Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club and other Organizations:
We are looking for organizations like yourself to come out and show the public who you are and what you have to offer. The gymnasium will be available for professionals to provide a chance for people to take part in a 10 to 15 minute interactive demonstration of tai chi, pilates, belly dancing, ball balancing exercises, etc. There is an opportunity for 4 participating organizations to utilize this area in the gym.
Others are invited to set up a booth or information area throughout the hallways and lobby in the Ben Avery Centre at Laurentian University.
The cost to you is nothing!! We want to help people become more active and be successful.

From Vince Perdue - I have canvassed a few members of the Club and we have decided to assist the Heart and Stroke foundation in this endeavour. We will set up a booth to provide information on running and how to become a new runner and perhaps a distance runner. We hope to host short demonstrations on how to run correctly, shoes, how to start, how to join if a beginner?? So far I have Russ Thom, Sheila Yaw-MacLean, Lise Edwards, Lise Perdue and Myself signed up as volunteers for the event. It should be fun.

Don't forget to come out and support this last event in Heart Month. We hope to see you there.

UBC Open Cross-Country Running Race, Vancouver

Lisa Labrecque placed 7th in the 4km at the UBC XC Open in Vancouver this weekend, in a time of 14:14. Lisa made a bad guess regarding spike length on the muddy course and ended up spinning her wheels for 4 kilometres.

She's home for two days of work and training, then flies to Yokohama, Japan on Wednesday morning - the Ekiden race is on Sunday (her birthday).

World Under-23 Nordic Skiing Championships

Congrats to TNOR alumni Devon Kershaw, who, along with his partner, won a bronze medal in the Sprint Relay at the World Under-23 Nordic Skiing Championships. It was a two-man relay in which the partners alternated legs of 1.2 km. Devon also placed 10th in the 1.2 km sprint and 11th in the 20km duathlon (half classic, half skating).

Devon now heads to Sweden, Norway, Finland and Italy for 5 weeks of World Cup Competition.

SYKES-SABOK TEAM CHALLENGE, U. OF PENNSYLVANIA

Andrew Ellerton had a tremendous weekend at the Penn State Invitational. On Friday night, he ran the third leg of the Distance Medley relay, running a 1:48.5. His U. of Michigan team's winning time was 9:29.77, which currently leads the NCAA and is only 1.55 seconds off the NCAA record and world records.
