Trail Running...and falling in Tennessee - by Karen Beaulieu

Hey there all you fellow Rocks!

Howdie, howdie from Hee Haw land. I am officially entered in the Mercedes
Marathon (half that is) in Birmingham, Alabama slammer. Hopefully Bev and I
will be able to check out some olympic time trials taking place the same
weekend. I'm pretty excited about that. The temperature is pretty great
here right now. Yesterday and today it has been in the upper 50's which is
pretty darn nice for a northern gal such as I. Kelly and I have found a new
place to run thanks to an article in the paper re: Trail running in the
area. It is absolutely fabulous to be able to trail run at this time of the
year. There are some awesome uphills and down which makes things
interesting as it can be quite slippery running downhill. For the most part
the trail is dry and very leaf covered which makes for a very soft landing
for you know who... Yesterday I had quite the tumble when I tripped over a
root and landed on another one with my knee which still hurts as we speak.
I was alone so my pride was still intact but today my three falls were all
witnessed by Kelly. She was especially impressed with the last as I slid
about four feet in the mud. Needless to say I was quite dirty after that
run and the red Tennessee dirt is permanently embedded in my pants. Sorry
to brag but we got so hot we stripped down to running bras..... in January!
I love this place so much we are going back tomorrow and dragging Steve
with us so I can prove that I can stay upright the whole run (probably not)
I'm trying to conVince Kelly that falling is half the fun but she is not
buying into it. I think I will run here most of the time now as it is great
hill training and much easier on the joints, unless you are on your joints
ha ha.
On Sunday I decided to join Cornelia (no I'm not on the planet of the apes)
for a 17 miler run . It was a nice easy pace so it went quite well and I
was quite pleased with myself and finished the last two miles feeling
strong and fast. Unfortunately later in the day my right achilles started
to act up so I am hoping this does not last too long . I know I probably
shouldn't have done the run and listened to my wise friend Monique to stick
to the schedule but oh well, maybe it would have happened anyway. I'm still
running and back to icing my foot.. Wish you guys could be here I know
Vince and Monique would love this trail. I took some pictures on the trail
so hopefully Steve will include them as he is missing a part to hook up the
camera to the computer boy stuff I don't understand. Talk t' y'all later
K
P.S. Trevor if you're out there a great big howdy to you

Track North Website Updates

If you haven't checked out Track North's website lately, go take a look at the updates. The "News" Section is now up to date and the "Athlete Profiles" Section is being completed with both active runners and alumni included. I would expect a "Photo" Section but there's even a "Video" Section. How cool is that.

Dick Moss adds:

By the way, if you aren't in the Profiles section yet, send one in
(email it to me). If you want to update your old profile - email it
to me or Pierre, and if you have a better photo than the one we're
using, email it.

TRACK NORTH NEWS - by Dick Moss

Practices Begin:

Well, the 2004 season begins. Practice will
follow this schedule:

Monday: 4:45 PM - Lockerby Secondary
Wednesday: 4:45 PM - Sudbury Arena
Saturday: 11:00 AM - Lockerby Secondary

Directions: Lockerby SS: On Mondays: Go through the front door, turn
right down the hallway until you find a door (to the right) that
takes you down to the gymnasium level. A hallway runs between the
gyms - follow this away from the gyms to the end of the hallway. The
wrestling room is there and that's where we meet. If you're late and
we're not in the wrestling room, we're probably upstairs on the
second or third floor.

Sudbury Arena: Downtown. After 4:30 PM, the only door that is open is
the one closest to the Golden Grain Bakery - next to the back parking
lot and Minto Street.

Lockerby on Saturday: The front door will be locked. Take the outside
gym door, or the side door (past the gyms) - next to the football
field.

Always be sure to bring outdoor running gear. If the day is nice, we
may go outside and run hills.

Latest Competitions:

Some mighty fine running for the first indoor meets of the season. At the Sharon Anderson meet at U. of Toronto, Lisa Labrecque ran a personal best (indoor and outdoor) in the 1500, running 4:22.49 - even though some knucklehead spectator stepped in front of her at the 800m mark. That's the fastest 1500m in Canada so fast this year.

Also in the race was Serena Jennings, fresh from Poland and ready to roll - she placed 3rd in the 1500m. Julie Forbes ran the 1000m for MacMaster (see below).

Sharon Anderson Open, U. of Toronto
1500m

1 Labrecque, Lisa Track North 4:22.49
3 Jennings, Serena University of Guelph 4:49.55

1000m
18 Forbes, Julie McMaster University 3:22.60

Jack Harvey Invitational, Ann Arbor

Andrew Ellerton won the 600m with a smooth 1:20.05.

See you soon!

Run in Memory of Kurt

On Saturday, January 31 the Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club will hosting our second annual Run in Memory Of Kurt Gelbhaar.

Kurt died suddenly on Tuesday, January 29, 2002. He was in his 79th year and still running competitively. He was a mentor and inspiration to most local runners and it is fitting his actions be remembered.

The Run will be very informal. There will be no set distances and it is not a race. We will meet in the lobby of the Cambrian Fitness Centre off Lorne St. at 9:00 am on Saturday, January 31. The run will start at approximately 9:15 am and will proceed at a leisurely pace towards Bell Park and Science North. Runners are free to go whatever distance appeals to them or fits their schedule but ALL runners will be encouraged to stick together for the first 1/2 hour

We hope to see you there.
