Reflect on Your Running

From Last Week: by Sheila Yaw-MacLean

Since the new year is approaching I thought the article below would help
"Rocks" reflect on the year past and help us search for the answer to the
one question that must be on most minds. Why did so many "Rocks" end up on
the injury list this year???? Are we a product of our own addiction???
Read on. The article is a little lengthily but it's good. Also take the
test at the end "Have you gone over the edge?". According to that test I
have. Quel surprise. Happy New Year to All. May we all stay healthy and
strong.
Sheila

Excellent article on running addiction. Am I addicted to exercise? Yes. Am I over the edge? I am close to the edge at times by your test. I answered yes to two questions.

Missing a work out is depressing, but I try to remember that the next day's workout will (and so far has been) twice as good. You will always benefit from undertraining, and will never benefit from over training.

I have worked out when I have had a cold.

We should try to remember that any movement can be regarded as cross training in an exercise program. For example, if I am scheduled to do an easy run, but because of the weather forecast, I really should cut the grass, I will look at cutting cutting the grass as my workout. That way I will not be over training, and will still be achieving the real life stuff. Go to the beach with your family and do some laps. Go on a bike ride with your family. It is still cross training, just that it includes the rest of your life.

We also need to do a reality check. Yes we need to do a lot of training for a marathon. Yes we are athletes. Yes we have a goal for our time. Yes we will be depressed if we do not reach our goal. But in reality, we are not professional ( that being paid ) athletes. If we miss our goal or a training run, it will not affect our jobs, pay cheques, or the rest of our career. The day, and even the minute, after the run, our lives go on. If a professional athlete misses the goal that is a separate story.

Congratulations, your article was bang-right-on.

Ken

Sudbury Masters Informal Run

THIS SUNDAY, January 11 at 10:00am

The Sudbury Masters are welcoming Sudbury and area runners out to their New Years Run. It's an informal affair with no set distances or pace. Most of the group will go approximately 10k around the roads near the University. Runners will meet outside the Ben Avery Gym by the side doors and leave at 10:00 am.The run will be followed by a brunch at Culpepper's. It sounds like fun.

Hey TNOR folks and Sudbury Rocks!!,

Here are a couple of websites you might find of interest - from Tim
Uuksulainen in North Bay. The first is a pace calculator that's
pretty slick. The second is a training schedule for marathoners.

Run in Memory of Kurt

On Saturday, January 31 the Sudbury Rocks!! Running Club will hosting our second annual Run in Memory Of Kurt Gelbhaar.

Kurt died suddenly on Tuesday, January 29, 2002. He was in his 79th year and still running competitively. He was a mentor and inspiration to most local runners and it is fitting his actions be remembered.

The Run will be very informal. There will be no set distances and it is not a race. We will meet in the lobby of the Cambrian Fitness Centre off Lorne St. at 9:00 am on Saturday, January 11. The run will start at approximately 9:15 am and will proceed at a leisurely pace towards Bell Park and Science North. Runners are free to go whatever distance appeals to them or fits their schedule but ALL runners will be encouraged to stick together for the first 1/2 hour

We hope to see you there.
