Ken Writes:

Hello everyone,

This year's race was the exact opposite of last year's race. Last year we had 2" of snow and a windy blizzard. This year it was sunny, dry, and a high off 8 degrees C. The conditions were similar to the Toronto Marathon last October. The biggest decision was what to where. Shorts or pants? How many shirts? Gloves?

We packed the winter wear and summer wear. Now the general rule is dress for 20 degrees F. warmer than what it is. Step outside. If you're comfortably cool, you are dressed about right. (So why did I not listen to my own words?) I decided on the pants, short sleeved Tee, and a fleece pullover. After I went for a warm up run, with 10 minutes to spare, I ran back to my locker, ditched the pullover and put on a long sleeve Tee. I had no time to put on shorts. I was a little warm but not too bad. Lynn decided on the pants, tank top, and running coat. Shortly into the run she took the coat off.

Remember my update on the Port Perry 1/2M last September? I raced against a guy (Terry) who ended up not showing. He liked to beat me and rub it in at the finish line. Welllllll, he showed up this time sporting his new "spicy" running suit. I just had my standard black and blue clothing. Which brings up the question, do people who wear "spicy" running gear go faster? Ah, time will tell. (Maybe the coach could do a study on this topic.) At the start line, I did not even look for him. I was already worried that my time may be off due to winter training. I've been putting out the same muscle effort, but with the snow, wind, and extra clothes sometimes the time was off. The horn sounded and off we went. He was not in front of me. One leg of the course was a turn around. I did not seem him immediately behind me. With the crowd coming I did not see him at all. So I just kept giving it. I finished the race at 1:22:34 (P.B. for 1/2M), 11th over all. And Terry finished 4 minutes later. Upon writing this, I now realize he has pissed me off so much that he could be a drive that pushes me. At Boston, I think I will imagine he is right behind me.

Lynn's time for the 5k was 0:31:38. She was in race mode as well . She had a couple of people right in front of her She gave it all and they finished just behind her. There was no way she was going to let them past. She felt good after the run.

So Vince is hinting for a carved "Rocks Logo". He mentioned I could decide on running a sub 3 hour Boston or doing the logo. The sub 3 hour is easier on the fingers, but the logo is easier on the legs. Well, we will have to see.

To everyone else who is looking forward to Boston, I hope your training goes as you plan.

Ken

Japanese Superman - "Read this if you think your workouts are too challenging"

Sakai Yusai has been dubbed "Superman" in Japan. A monk in the Tendai Buddhist order in Japan, Yusai participated in the ritual of running two marathons of 26 miles each, every day for 100 days straight. The monks take the challenge 10 times over the course of seven years, to purify their souls. For good measure, Yusai completed the challenge twice. Yusai, now 75, was 61 years old when he made his last run. The only footwear permitted is straw slippers, for protection from the jagged, slippery terrain."I did it twice because the first time I didn't feel satisfied", he says.
